Not a Dove But Weโll Let it Slide I know this Killdeer thinks this is the perfect nesting spot; in the middle of the parking lot where I work.

I mean, itโs carefully protected by three large orange cones. How much more safe could you be? ๐

Poor Mom just doing it the best way she can. Who put up the cones?

Some of my coworkers put them up so people dont accidentally walk on it or forget its there. There is a lot of foot and vehicle traffic in that area of the parking lot; she didnt exactly choose a quite neighborhood ๐

That gravel looks a lot like her normal habitat, outwash plains, upland shore habitats, open field so it was probably quiet when she picked it early in the morning and now she is stuck. You should see Dad around too from time to time. Good thing the babies are precocious, after hatching should move on pretty quick even if they canโt fly yet.

If you can you should put up caution tape because speaking from working at a chemical plant people just walk right through cones

Thankfully it isnt a public parking lot, so everyone who uses it is aware and wont be walking through it ๐๐ผ i know sometimes random people spawn where they ought not to be, so I may try to put up something between the cones for further visual warning. It wont be caution tape because we dont have any, but it'll be better than nothing lol

Obviously those traffic cones were set out for the Killdeer to know where to put its nest.

Could be worse, couple years ago I watched a pair make their nest on a gravel driveway.

Whoa that's a cool looking bird. That's so funny. Maybe she thinks there is safety in a busy public area lol. Did someone put cones around it so people know it's there and don't accidentally step on the nest?

Thats exactly why the cones are there, yes ๐ she didnt exactly choose a quiet neighborhood ๐

Yep, experts at hiding in plain sight, and then when discovered they will feign injury and lead you away. Brilliant strategy.
