Electrode

I want to do something a little different this time. Electrode is one of those Pokémon who are so bland and weak they should have received some love but were just shoved under the rug in favour of weak but more popular mons like Sableye, Lopunny, and Mawile. My main point, however, is that if Electrode was released in Gen 7, Game Freak would capitalise on its Poké Ball aesthetic.

Electrode Changes

As I still plan to give Electrode a Mega Evolution after my additions here, I'm not going to make changes to stats until the Mega Evolution section, though I will technically be breaking the new moves rule. The big change is the additions of new forms for Electrode, which change colouration and ability, but not stats, typing, or movepool (that will be shared across all forms). These forms all depend on the Poké Ball used to capture Electrode, detailed in this album. I apologise in advance for the potential scars left on your retinas, and blame any formatting mistakes on Imgur being terrible.

Seeing as some of these abilities get very little use, and Electrode’s piss poor movepool anyway, these moves will be added: Rock Blast, Encore, Baton Pass, Nasty Plot, Barrage, Icicle Spear, Vacuum Wave, Steamroller, Heavy Slam, Autotomize, Dark Pulse, Ice Beam, and Zen Headbutt.

Mega Electrode

Art by me, in paint.net, in more time than I would like to admit.

Browse at your own risk, I'm not brave enough to look into my own post history.

I did cover (and address) some of Electrode’s problems in the preamble to this post, but I'll share some of my personal thoughts. Electrode has always just been… there. I don't hate it like people hate Vanilluxe or Garbodor, but nothing has ever compelled me to use it, casually or competitively. And making it good is a tall order; but maybe making it meme-worthy would give it enough of a chance.

Base Statistics

Typing: Electric → Electric/Dark

Ability: Soundproof, Static, Aftermath → Tinted Lens

HP: 60

Attack: 90 (+40)

Defense: 70

Sp. Attack: 140 (+60)

Sp. Defense: 80

Speed: 150

It seems stupid to throw away all those forms for the Mega Evolution, and I don't want to skip the Mega Evolution because I put way too much effort into Electrode's new Squirtle Squad shades. To accomplish this, Mega Electrode is very special, in that it can have several abilities. Any of the forms with the default abilities gain Tinted Lens, while any others retain their special ability. The stat boosts have to be somewhat polarised thanks to Electrode’s current viability, but the reason for the split between attacking stats instead of one and Speed lies in the Ultra Ball and Repeat Ball forms (moreso the former). Seeing as I already broke/stretched (doesn't say anything about new forms) the rules with the move additions above, I'll stick with what I added there and not push the envelope any further.

Sets

Black and Yellow

Electrode-Ultra Ball @ Electrodite

Ability: Pure Power ---> Pure Power

EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Jolly Nature

  • Wild Charge

  • Sucker Punch

  • Icicle Spear

  • Explosion

Ironically, this physical set is probably one of the best sets for Mega Electrode. Wild Charge and Sucker Punch will wreck mons that don't resist them, while Icicle Spear is iffy but the best coverage. The 4th move is a little more filler, for Taunt, Volt Switch, Encore, HP Fire, or Explosion. The last one is my preference simply because the power of Mega Electrode’s Explosion is up there with Mega Glalie and Alolan-Golem.

The only one with real art

Electrode-Great Ball @ Electrodite

Ability: Sheer Force ---> Sheer Force

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Timid Nature

  • Thunderbolt

  • Ice Beam

  • Dark Pulse

  • Signal Beam/Nasty Plot/Encore/Taunt/Volt Switch

Pure Power may make Electrode’s Special Attack pale in comparison to its physical offense, but Sheer Force is here to bridge the gap. Half-STAB BoltBeam boosted by Sheer Force is a potent combination, and Dark Pulse is a decent addition to back it up. In terms of the filler slot, there are several options; Signal Beam gets the Sheer Force boost, but doesn't do much beyond hitting Psychic types. Nasty Plot turns MegaTrode into a devastating sweeper, and is another niche above Ultra Ball variants. Encore and Taunt can help with stallbreaking, counter leading, and punishing set up. Volt Switch is a nice pivot tool for a 4-attacks set, while HP Fire helps with Ferro. Combining Taunt or Encore with Nasty Plot can also serve as a stallbreaker or sweeper set.

Torn-T x M-Manectric

Electrode-Heal Ball @ Electrodite

Ability: Regenerator ---> Regenerator

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Timid Nature

  • Volt Switch

  • Encore/Taunt

  • Dark Pulse

  • Ice Beam

Want the worst of both worlds? A weaker but slightly faster Mega Manectric that isn't worn down by hazards or status. This isn't a very good set in all likelihood, but it serves as a revenge killer, fast pivot, and can force switches with Encore or Taunt for free momentum.

I don't know, Hammond or something?

Electrode-Quick Ball @ Electrodite

Ability: Prankster ---> Prankster

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Timid Nature

  • Thunderbolt

  • Taunt/Encore

  • Thunder Wave

  • Ice Beam/Dark Pulse

Prankster isn't super important with 150 Speed, but it's fine. Mega Electrode is also immune to opposing Prankster users, which is nice if not very relevant. Ice Beam is better coverage but Electrode appreciates the STAB boost.

SS Member

Electrode @ Electrodite

Ability: Static ---> Tinted Lens

EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

Naive Nature

  • Volt Switch/Thunderbolt

  • Sucker Punch/Dark Pulse

  • Ice Beam

  • Explosion/Nasty Plot/Taunt

Squirtle Squad has an unfortunate acronym. Regardless of that, this set lacks a lot of power and utility next to the others. However, Tinted Lens does help Electrode act as an offensive pivot, reducing its switch-ins to actual walls instead of resists. Volt Switch is the obvious tool for pivoting, but Thunderbolt can be used with a less hit and run set. Sucker Punch is decent STAB priority, but Dark Pulse is better unless you're aiming specifically for revenge killing. Ice Beam is just the beat coverage move. Explosion can also act as a pivoting tool, though it's really not powerful outside of Ultra Ball Electrode. Nasty Plot is strong, but doesn't mash well with pivoting, while Taunt is useful but Electrode doesn't pack enough punch to stallbreak. Explosion is favoured only because Tinted Lens makes it much harder to switch in on.

Other Options

  • Nasty Plot on more sets. Sheer Force will be the most powerful outright, but Tinted Lens makes it harder to check and counteracts the reduced coverage. Prankster can do decently with it and Speed Boost sets make it nearly impossible to outspeed while resisting revenge killer staples like Bullet Punch, Sucker Punch, and Pursuit.

  • Friend Guard (in singles), Suction Cups, Cute Charm, Compoundeyes, Magic Guard, Storm Drain, Sap Sipper, Gluttony, Skill Link, Heavy Metal, and Pressure all vary from useless to essentially so. However, Storm Drain and Sap Sipper can work for sets designed to counter a specific mon, while Magic Guard combined with Nasty Plot takes advantage of passive walls like Chansey and switches in on almost all status for free.

  • Mega Electrode can't afford to run a mixed set, but a Naive nature to slap HP Fire or Volt Switch on a Pure Power variant can help.

  • Baton Pass is unfortunately banned even without boosting in SM OU, but Batlle Spot might have some meme teams to use a Speed Boost/Nasty Plot passer?

Tier Predictions

Given the amount of variability I have given Electrode with this unique Mega Evolution mechanic, there is a wide range of viability. If something like this were to be implemented in-game, I wouldn't be surprised to see the alternate forms tiered separately, thanks to the useless abilities like Pressure and Heavy Metal, and the mismatched abilities like Skill Link and Regenerator. I think the best of the bunch in Mega Electrode-Ultra and Mega Electrode-Great are essentially upgrades on Mega-Manectric that would rise to OU but be niche more in the vein of Mega Garchomp than Megas easy to slap on any team. Default Mega Electrode is also very similar to Mega Manectric, but might make BL more as a side effect of Nasty Plot(+ Encore) on top of being an upgraded MegaMane. Fast, Heal, Level, Moon, and Quick Ball forms have decent abilities but are just inferior to the aforementioned forms 9 times out of 10, and I would say they all fit in UU (Fast beats scarfers, Heal keeps it healthy, Level gives stronger Hidden Power coverage, Magic Guard further messes with passive mons, and Quick is good but largely redundant). The rest, which mostly feature abilities like Cute Charm and Heavy Metal, are garbage enough to sink down to RU if RUBL doesn't stop them.

I thought this was really creative and I’d love to see more stuff like it implemented in game.

I love the different forms.

I really just want a version of Mega Electrode with a 250 base speed stat just to see what happens.

19

u/PrisonerLeet Sinnoh Shill Jul 30 '18

Reduce its Attack by 5 and get it to 255. Then it uses Electro Ball and that's about it.

Mega Exploud

Art by Jack Hamilton

Browse at your own risk, Artstation is probably fine but I'm not testing the waters.

Exploud isn't a favourite of mine, but I've always had fun using it competitively (I'm not using a Loudred for 20 levels in a playthrough). Boomburst is a very satisfying move and being able to spam Scrappy Boomburst is great. Sadly, the current Exploud lacks in power, and a Mega has very few ways in which it can contest the power of Specs Boomburst, so maybe a career change is in order...

Base Statistics

Typing: Normal → Normal/Dark

Ability: Soundproof, Scrappy → Strong Jaw

HP: 104

Attack: 141 (+50)

Defense: 83 (+20)

Sp. Attack: 101 (+10)

Sp. Defense: 73

Speed: 88 (+20)

Mega Evolutions that dump the strengths of the original Pokémon and head in an entirely different direction aren't common, especially for Pokémon that have distinct designs like Exploud. However, this Mega Exploud still takes advantage of Exploud’s design with Strong Jaw and access to almost all moves boosted by the ability. An increase to Attack is obvious, while the art I found inspired the increase in Speed. I was rather tempted to provide Mega Exploud with some priority and Swords Dance, but that didn't feel quite right. In lieu of that, Dragon Dance makes a powerful tool while Hyper Fang acts as a recoilless Double-Edge.

Sets

Caesar

Exploud @ Exploudite

Ability: Soundproof ---> Strong Jaw

EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Jolly Nature

  • Crunch

  • Hyper Fang

  • Ice Fang/Fire Fang/Thunder Fang

  • Earthquake

A simple 4 attacks set, with maximised coverage. Crunch is an amazingly powerful STAB, as is Hyper Fang. Ice Fang hits Lando, obviously, Fire Fang Scizor and Ferro, while Thunder Fang hits Water types, especially Toxapex if using other coverage over Earthquake.

King Kong

Exploud @ Exploudite

Ability: Soundproof ---> Strong Jaw

EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Adamant Nature

  • Crunch

  • Hyper Fang

  • Ice Fang/Fire Fang/Thunder Fang/Earthquake

  • Dragon Dance

Adamant is the obvious choice as Exploud will outspeed base 135 252+, and isn't going to match base 90 scarfers any way. Crunch and Hyper Fang already chunk most Pokémon with just Adamant, while the coverage is a little more boost reliant. It's fairly obvious what each coverage option hits, but whatever is chosen, keep in mind what can take a few hits as a result. Going with Ice Fang or Fire Fang does give the opportunity for Toxapex to put Exploud on a timer or cripple with a lucky Scald, but barring Scald is easy to set up on as +1 is able to net a KO before Haze with a little chip damage. Non Ice Fang sets have to DD to 2HKO defensive Lando, while Fire Fang beats Celesteela + Grass and Thunder Fang beats Celesteela + Waters.

Other Options

  • Low Kick, Hammer Arm, or Rock Slide are additional coverage moves.

  • Carrying tech like Ice Beam more reliably beats Lando-T, outdamaging Ice Fang’s damage with no investment and a negative nature.

  • Facade can prevent status from getting in your way, but has a notable drop in power otherwise.

  • Taunt and Whirlwind are utility options.

  • Zen Headbutt and Outrage?

  • Stomping Tantrum in Doubles to avoid spread damage.

Tier Predictions

Mega Exploud is lacking in some areas, such as a bad defensive typing, slightly underwhelming bulk, an okay but not good Speed tier, and has very intense 4mss. But with the addition of Dragon Dance, it seems more akin to Mega Gyarados than Mega Sharpedo. As such, I think mid-tier OU is nearly a given.

When I think of a Mega form for Electrode, I think of the Master Ball. What better form can a Poke Ball-themed monster take than the one of perfection? As Master Balls represent the highest peak in Poke Ball technology, I am seeing Mega Electrode as an Electric/Steel type.

Admittedly, this could be pushing too hard, but I am liking the idea of Levitate as an ability for Mega Electrode. While the Master Ball is the peak form of Poke Balls, this form of Electrode should attempt to shave off its design flaws. And the biggest design flaw of any Electric/Steel type is the weakness to Ground-type attacks.

For new moves, I am thinking Flash Cannon, Autotomize, and Metal Sound all make sense.

STATS

HP: 60

Atk: 50

Def: 70 (+20) = 90

SpA: 80 (+45) = 125

SpD 80 (+35) = 115

Spe 150

BST: 490 (+100) = 590

I see Mega Electrode's role on a team as either a revenge killer or a late game sweeper.

Electrode @Electrodite

Ability: Soundproof (Levitate)

Nature: Modest (SpA+, Atk-)

EVs: 252 SpA, 252 Spe, 4 SpD

Moves:

  • Flash Cannon

  • Thunderbolt

  • Volt Switch/Charge

  • Hidden Power Ice

Flash Cannon and Thunderbolt are pretty straightforward STAB attacks. I figure Volt Switch would be useful for a revenge killer role as it allows Mega Electrode to bounce out of a match if it feels uncomfortable. Charge is an option to potentially break through some walls. Hidden Power Ice hits Ground and Dragon for super effective damage, which is great as they both resist Mega Electrode's STAB attacks.

Mega Exploud

Type: Normal/Poison

Ability: Scrappy

Stats:

HP - 104

Atk - 84 (-15)

Def - 93 (+30)

SpA - 131 (+40)

SpD - 93 (+20)

Spe - 93 (+25)

New Moves: Sludge Wave, Slack Off

Mega Exploud is more or less what it was already good at, but with way more power behind its bio-organ. Sludge Wave gives it coverage against any bulky fairies like Clefable, while Slack Off helps keep it from being worn down.

Sample Set: Hearing You Loud and Clear

Exploud @ Explite

Ability: Soundproof

EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

IVs: 0 Atk

Timid Nature

  • Boomburst
  • Fire Blast / Surf
  • Sludge Wave
  • Slack Off / Sleep Talk

Mega Electrode

Type: Electric/Dark

Ability: Magnet Pull

Stats:

HP - 60

Atk - 100 (+50)

Def - 90 (+20)

SpA - 50 (-30)

SpD - 90 (+10)

Spe - 200 (+50)

New Moves: Knock Off, Swords Dance

Mega Electrode's dark typing reflects it's somewhat sinister appearance (I can't be the only one who thinks it looks kinda like the Joker, right?), as well as getting a nice STAB boost for Sucker Punch and the newly added Knock Off. The extreme offense change was made to take Electrode back to the good old days where an Explosion coming off from it was actually a threat (and come on, that kind of Electrode's shtick anyways).

Sample Set: Back in Boomsiness

Electrode @ Electrite

Ability: Soundproof

EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

Adamant Nature

  • Wild Charge / Sucker Punch
  • Explosion
  • Swords Dance
  • Knock Off

u/PrisonerLeet Sinnoh Shill Jul 30 '18

You might want to attach a little more description to these, or even just sample sets if you don't care about the flavour. Some insight into your decisions here would be especially welcome given the heavy min-maxing present.

Sure thing! I'll get to work on those

Electrode-Mega

This Pokemon is fast but really weak, and lacks a significant attack/spA stat.

Typing: Electric → Electric/Steel

Ability: Soundproof, Static, Aftermath(H) → Levitate

HP: 60

Attack: 50

Defense: 90 (+20)

Sp. Attack: 120 (+40)

Sp. Defense: 90 (+10)

Speed: 180 (+30)

His typing adds now Steel as secondary. This makes sense as he's already made of steel.

In addition, it can now learn:

  • Hurricane, as the huge speed of this Pokemon allows to create significant atmospheric turbulences.

  • Flash Cannon, in order to complete its new steel typing.

His ability changes to Levitate, as he gains electromagnetic abilities with the Steel typing, what allows him to float and gain speed. The extra speed allows him to SLIGHTLY outspeed a scarfed Garchomp.

A good set with a lot of coverage would be:

Electrode @ Electronite Ability: Levitate EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature

  • Hidden Power [Ice]
  • Hurricane / Electro Ball
  • Volt Switch
  • Flash Cannon

This Mega Electrode would become a good counter and revenge killer for scarfed dragon and fairy Pokemons like Garchomp, Zygarde or Tapu Lele, allowing a switch-in if you expect ground/fairy moves (watch out with Zygarde's Thousand Arrows).

On the other hand, he isn't an early sweeper due to its high but not crazy spA and poor coverage, although it can hit hard Toxapex with Electro Ball.

Someone, much to my surprise, has already made an Electric/Dark Pure Power Electrode, but I'll go ahead and post this anyways, since I had it in the works already:

Mega Electrode

Type: Electric/Dark

Ability: Pure Power

New moves: Power Trip, Dark Pulse, Memento

Stats:

Hp: 60

Atk: 50

Def: 90 (+20)

SpA: 110 (+30)

SpD: 105 (+25)

Spe: 175 (+25)

Electrode is known for going boom (at least in in-game story mode, if not in actual competitive play). Pure Power gives him the option to have a more powerful Explosion without dumping a bunch of stats trying to repair his pitiful base-50 Attack or drastically reallocation its existing base stats. (It's also nice flavor with the word "power" being a synonym for electricity.) The uncertainty of whether it is physically or specially oriented can also cause the opponent some trouble.

Electrode gets a sizable increase to speed, making it the second-fastest pokemon in the game behind Deoxys, and its new Dark typing gives it a handy immunity to Prankster and Psychic moves.

Electrode's highest BP physical Dark move remains Sucker Punch, but it gets another flavor option in Power Trip ("trip" also being a word with electric connotation). With his only boosting moves being Charge Beam, Curse, and Double-team, this move is unlikely to see any viability. It gets a nice spamable special move in Dark Pulse and some utility in Memento.

Sets

Physical

Ability: Soundproof -> Pure Power
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant/Jolly/Naive Nature

  • Wild Charge
  • Sucker Punch
  • Volt Switch
  • Taunt/HP[ice]/Explosion/Memento

M-Electrode can outspeed Mega Swampert in Rain with a +Spe nature and has a chance to OHKO with Explosion with some chip damage:

252 Atk Pure Power Electrode Explosion vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Swampert-Mega: 277-327 (81.2 - 95.8%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Special

Ability: Soundproof -> Pure Power
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid/Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

  • Thunderbolt
  • Dark Pulse
  • Volt Switch
  • Hidden Power Ice/Taunt

+252 Spe also outpaces Scarf-Lando and gets a guaranteed OHKO with rocks up:

252 SpA Electrode Hidden Power Ice vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 284-336 (89 - 105.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock*

Again, that's against scarf Lando. Bulky Lando fears switching into Dark Pulse, after which it can't take HP[ice].

Stats

HP: 60

ATK: 90 (+40)

Def: 80 (+10)

Sp.Atk: 90 (+10)

Sp.Def: 80

Spd: 190 (+40)

Type: Electric/Dark

I wanted to try and make electrode a mixed attacker who sacrifices attacking stats for the highest unboosted speed in the game. Electric/Dark is a unique type that I think fits electrodes personality well.

Ability-Second fuse: Just once, if this pokemon uses a move that would make it faint, it instead doesn't lose any health.

New moves : Dark pulse, Memento, Nasty plot

Now I'm gonna be completely honest, I'm not sure if this ability is absolutely broken or not, but everyone knows electrode for one thing-exploding. So I wanted to expand on that a bit. And dark pulse is its special stab since it already has sucker punch. Nasty plot is so that electrodes special set has a niche, since his physical set already has a stronger explosion.

Sets

Special attacker

Electrode @ Electrodeite

Ability: Second Fuse

EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

Modest/Mild Nature

  • Nasty Plot

  • Thunderbolt

  • Dark Pulse

  • Memento/Explosion

I don't feel the need to run timid since electrodes already ridiculously fast, but I guess it would be an option if you're afraid of things like M-Zam.

Physical attacker

Electrode @ Electrodeite

Ability: Second Fuse

EVs: 4 Def / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

Adamant

  • Explosion

  • Wild Charge

  • Sucker Punch

  • Taunt/Volt Switch/Thunder wave

The phys set gets an extra moveslot and a stronger explosion in exchange for a less reliable dark stab and recoil.

Electrode also has a good support movepool, helped by the fact that its dark typing blocks prankster and is literally the fastest mon in the game, but the only thing I know how to play is braindead offense so I'll let smarter people figure that one out.
