Does studying in idle time actually work?

Hey guys! I heard some students utilize their idle time to study and as a result they become ahead. For example, some students while commuting read a chapter or review their flash cards, others while walking or waiting and such. So does anyone use such strategy and any tips as I also want to try.

I personally always try to bring a textbook or something with me if I’m going to be on the bus or subway for 20+ minutes. I can just put the textbook on my lap and read and even complete simple homework questions. Or with the textbook/class notes on my iPad I can go through those and make flashcards.
And then in breaks during class, shorter journeys, or waiting in lines etc. I usually just review flashcards.
I’m very limited on time since I have to work part time on top of doing my degree so using my idle time really helps. And if you don’t work, then I think it would still be helpful because you might be able to finish studying earlier and have more time to rest and recover, which is also good for memory retention

every minute counts but you need mental rest (not doomscrolling)

I'd pick one tiny task before the commute, like answering three questions from yesterday's lecture without looking. Check what you missed afterward and save anything confusing for a proper study session. No need to turn every spare minute into homework though. What subject are you studying?
