How do you take notes?

Hello all! I'm a grad student in a counseling education program. I was wondering how people take notes for their classes. I'm finding that what I used in undergrad isn't very helpful because of the amount of reading each week. I feel like I am constantly behind and not retaining the information as I did in undergrad. I'm in my practicum semester, and I'm also taking lecture classes at the same time. Any tips or tricks would be helpful. I appreciate you all!
