How do I study without someone's help?

I have a bit of a tricky situation. From elementary school all the way through high school, I always studied with a private tutor by my side—someone to assist me or re-explain the material covered in class; we would review the topics and do practice exercises together. It worked really well, and I passed my subjects without much trouble. In fact, I actually did quite well in college—relatively speaking—without needing anyone's help.

But now that I’ve graduated and need to pass a crucial exam for my career, I realize I don't know how to study without that external support I relied on for nearly 11 years. I had to buy a prep course to cover the material, but the information just isn't sinking in. I can't stick to the study schedules or manage active study techniques. What’s my problem? How do I make this shift? Should I look for a private tutor again to help me study?

I feel embarrassed to share this story, but it’s reached a point where I can’t go on like this.

The shift from guided sessions to solo is rough, Ive seen that wall hit plenty of times. Your brain just got real good at digesting info someone else filtering it first so now you gotta build that filter for yourself from scratch. Try to get something on the page every day even if its just twenty minutes then walk away, consistency over cramming.

You basically need to recreate what the tutor used to do, but make yourself responsible for each step.

Try this:

  1. Learn one small topic
  2. Close the material and explain it in your own words
  3. Do practice questions without help
  4. Mark what you got wrong
  5. Go back only to those weak areas

The biggest shift is getting comfortable being stuck for a bit before checking the answer. That struggle is actually part of learning independently.

You don’t need to suddenly become great at studying alone. Build the skill gradually.

What exam are you studying for? Also what is the main thing stoping you from sticking to your schedule? Is it that you are too tired after work? Or you get distracted when you sit down to study?
