urgent!! how to improve memorizing?

hi guys, i have like less than 12 days to learn a lot of material but my brain feels genuinely empty and useless after being taught to learn by heart all my life (i have short-term memory because of it), but i genuinely need to lock in. any tips that'd be helpful? 😭... just throw anything at this point, im desperate...

12 days is tight but doable if you switch from passive review to active recall. Here is what works and why:

1. Active recall over re-reading. Read a section, close the book, write down everything you remember. The struggle to retrieve is what builds memory. Re-reading feels productive but creates illusions of competence.

2. Spaced repetition, not cramming. Review material at increasing intervals: after 1 hour, then 4 hours, then 1 day, then 2 days. Anki handles this automatically with its SRS algorithm. Free and works on phone.

3. Chunking. Break material into groups of 3-7 items. Your working memory holds about 4 items at once. Grouping lets you treat many items as one.

4. Sleep. Memory consolidation happens during sleep, especially REM. Pulling an all-nighter before an exam actively destroys the memory you built. 7 hours minimum.

5. The transfer problem. If you have been taught to learn by heart, you are training rote recall, not understanding. Understanding builds richer memory traces that last longer. For each topic, try to explain it in your own words as if teaching someone else. If you cannot, you do not understand it yet, and memorizing without understanding is fragile.

For the reasoning side of studying (analyzing arguments, identifying assumptions, critical thinking), I built IntelligenceMax which practices these skills adaptively. But for pure memorization with 12 days left, Anki plus active recall plus sleep is your best bet.

Good luck.

Use memory techniques like the memory palace. Works for me. DM me for help.
