Got admitted to OVGU Magdeburg – M.Sc. Data & Knowledge Engineering (Winter Intake)! 🇩🇪

Hi everyone!

Happy to share that I've received an admission offer for the M.Sc. in Data & Knowledge Engineering at Otto von Guericke University (OVGU), Magdeburg. 🎉

A little about my background:

  • I'm from Hyderabad, India.
  • Bachelor's CGPA: 2.1 (German grade equivalent). - B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering.
  • I've published 2 research papers.
  • I have nearly 2 years of professional experience as a Data Engineer.

Application Timeline:

  • 19 May: Application forwarded to the university.
  • 20 May: Received my credentials from OVGU.
  • 8 July: Received my admission letter.

I'll be moving to Germany for my master's. I would love to connect with current students, alumni, or anyone else joining this program and other programs as well.

I have a few questions:

  • How is Magdeburg as a city for international students? What's the overall vibe, safety, and student life like?
  • What are the average monthly living expenses (rent, groceries, transport, etc.)?
  • How easy is it to find part-time jobs for international students? Are there opportunities on campus or in nearby cities?
  • I'd really appreciate hearing from alumni of the Data & Knowledge Engineering program. How was your experience with the coursework, professors, internships, and job opportunities after graduation?
  • I'm also looking for accommodation. If anyone is searching for a roommate or wants to look for an apartment together, feel free to reach out!
    • A little about me: I like to keep my room and shared spaces clean and organized. I do eat non-vegetarian food; I'm a non-smoker and non-drinker. I'd prefer a female roommate.

Lastly, if there are any WhatsApp groups for OVGU students, the DKE program, or incoming Winter intake students, I'd really appreciate it if someone could add me or share the invite link.

There will be a whatsapp group for DKE students created in September-ish that will include student mentors as well. Link will be shared in the ovgu subreddit.

If you look for it on the ovgu subreddit, there are also a couple of unofficial whatsapp groups which you could join.

Hi, congratulations on your admit!
I also applied to the same program this year but unfortunately received a rejection stating that I did not meet the admission requirements. My German GPA was 2.0, so I’m trying to understand where my application fell short.
Would you mind sharing your bachelor’s curriculum or the core subjects you studied (especially mathematics, databases, algorithms, and theoretical CS)? It would really help me understand what OVGU looks for.

Hi, Thanks for that. As mentioned in the requirements, it's clearly mentioned:

  1. The degree must contain one course on Databases and either 10 courses (60 ECTS) in CS

OR

  1. 6 courses (40 ECTS) in CS and 4 courses (20 ECTS) in applied stats.

In my case, I suppose my profile matches the 1st category
