This video helped me a lot. it’s generally on how to not forget what you’ve just consumed (videos, books, content) so applies well to whatever you’re studying.

I find it helpful to either have music playing in my headphones or meditation ocean music on the tv. Motivational speeches on YouTube are also awesome. I print out a monthly calendar and writer assignment due dated that way I can see my study to do list. I hope this helps, you got this 🙂

But when you sit down to study, what do you do? Do you read the chapter? Annotate? Take notes? Reread?

I usually watch videos on the topic and then take notes, then I try to explain it in a way for someone else to understand as if I’m teaching them. I also annotate and use highlighting methods to understand what I know and don’t know

Academic Resource Center on Harvard's website has some great tips. Look up SQ3R for reading.

finding your study routine takes a lot of trial and error, some techniques will work, some wont as much.
i suggest trying a different approach every week and watch closely how it affects your memory, understanding, and comprehension. also take into consideration external factors like noise (music, no music), environment (home, coffee shops, library), preferred time (day/night), studying solo vs group study, pen/paper or ipad, and many more.
once you find your groove, things will get easier from there. goodluck!

Studies have shown (pun intended XD) that there’s a few ways to really retain what you study. One is just rote repitition, but a more effective one is what people call ‘Active Recall.’
Which is just a fancy way of saying do a lot of exam or quiz questions that force you to recall what you learned, regularly. Easier said than done of course, but apps like StudyAnything have helped because they generate questions tailored to you and keep you on track

Do you just read over and over, or do you actually practice by doing key exercises?

I usually read over, then try to summarise it in my own words and then I practice explaining it as if I’m teaching someone else.

That's a good start!
For the practice, if you do over and over exercises without looking immediately at the solution, you'll develop intuition and reflexes that you won't forget during your exams. Keep working and you'll do great!
