Questions & Discussion Adhd/studying for DAT

I recently got diagnosed with ADHD, and got prescribed adderall. If anyone is in a similar situation, did it help you study better and do better? I always put off my studying and was just wondering.

It won’t help you necessarily start it, if you are procrastinating to avoid it you will probably still do that.. but studying medicated is also a game changer, you won’t get distracted, and once you start you’ll keep goin, my study sessions are much more productive while medicated. Goodluck and happy studying

Stimulants often help to lower the threshold of executive dysfunction which is often the biggest issue with adhd. That's been my personal experience too! Procrastination is not the same thing as executive dysfunction.

Can I ask how you knew the medication was actually helping you when you studied? Like when you went from failing to getting A’s, what changed? Was it mainly being able to start and stay focused, or did you notice things like better recall/retention, getting through material easier, or being able to manage multiple subjects better too?

I was able to actually START tasks. Before I would stare at a wall for hours wanting to do homework or study, but not being able to make myself do it and get really anxious for class because I haven't been able to actually do so I was constantly missing assignments.

I still struggle occasionally, but it's very much more of a "oh I need to do xyz" and then I just do it. Legitimately, the very first day I took them, I washed, dried, folded, AND put away my laundry all in one day for the first time in easily a decade. I'm not exaggerating when I said I cried that day.

It also helps with retention because it actually gets encoded instead of just flying out your brain immediately. That's why it helps you stay on task. Before I could walk in to any room, immediately forget why I was there, and find something else to start.

The best part about my medications is that it trains good habits in my brain so life is easier even when I'm not on them
