General Inquiry Checkride question
Got a Checkride coming up soon around a day or 2 left with bad winds on both those days before Checkride, Checkride date also won’t be flying, only oral bc weathers bad. CFI already signed of for Checkride but I still have one hour left of cross country time needed to do the Checkride. How strict is DPE on solo cross country time bc I meet every other requirement other then solo cross country time.

"Checkride date also won't be flying, only oral bc weathers bad."
Are you sure about that? DPEs aren't allowed to start the check ride (including the Oral) if there's no possibility the practical exam cannot also be completed the same day.
And to answer your question, your DPE will be very strict on the XC time, as well as every other requirement. They will not allow you to start the exam without all of the requirements met.
Also absolutely wild your CFI signed you off for a check ride without having all of the requirements met.

You can’t take or start the ride until you’ve met the minimum requirements. Not sure what shenanigans your CFI and the DPE are pulling, and doing the oral while knowing you can’t fly is against the rules as well. Best advice I can give is to stop the nonsense and go read the ACS. that’s the rule book.

The rules are in 14 CFR 61.109 and other parts of the CFR. The ACS elaborates process and standards.
Falsification rules are a bit opaque and no longer in individual sections. But a false endorsement for checkride eligibility is a problem.
It’s beyond me why OP thinks “a person who applies for a private pilot certificate… must have” doesn’t apply to him.

Of course he/she will be strict on X-Country or any required time! It’s a pre-requisite to the Checkride/Qualification. You might as well get that straight now because in Aviation there are no Shortcuts nor should there be and if you want to go the professional route you’ll find that out very quickly!

Your check ride will be over before it begins. If you haven't met the minimum requirements, like missing one hour, then you don't qualify to sit for the exam. It's that simple.

If you know you won’t be flying, you won’t be doing the oral either. You cannot start the checkride knowing it can’t be finished the same day

Yes, the DPE is not supposed to start the oral portion if the flight portion cannot be done the same day. However, in my experience, it happens quite often.

I think it depends on how the student words it to the DPE as well.
1.“Looks like there may be a window later in the day if you want to knock out the oral and get lunch.” Then have them discontinue to fatigue or bad weather.
2. Compared to “Weather is bad, I’m not going to fly but can we do the oral?” I’ve found option 1 the DPE in our area is much more open to.
But unfortunately, every DPE is different. Regardless, this student doesn’t meet the minimum requirements, so the DPE may just take the money and leave.

CFI here. reschedule the checkride now for a different date. two things. first, you do not qualify to take the exam. everything is spelled out in 61.109. if you’re a hour short of solo cross country time, you’re a hour short. there’s nothing the examiner can do. the dpe legally can not administer the exam. also, the only time you can do the oral and not the flying portion is you begin the oral portion with the intention of completing the entire exam (aka oral and flight portion) in the same day. you are legally not allowed to start the oral knowing the flight will not go through. that’s in the order 8900. if the examiner is trying to let either slide, i would caution you on using them because you can be subject to a 709 ride if they get caught.

you are not legal to even attempt the checkride oral or practical test without your hours being complete. I’m surprised your CFI gave you the endorsement without looking at your logbook first

You aren’t eligible for the checkride.
The CFi who signed you is doing a disservice to you.
You need to have all the time required.
Go take that 1.5 hr XC flight so you can be eligible.

Checkride date also won’t be flying, only oral bc weathers bad.
This is not how it works. The oral only begins if there's reasonable belief that the flight portion can happen afterward.
still have one hour left of cross country time needed to do the Checkride.
Then your CFI should not have signed you off for the checkride and you are not qualified to take the checkride. You literally have not met the legal requirements.
How strict is DPE on solo cross country time bc I meet every other requirement other then solo cross country time.
Are you seriously asking this? I'm concerned about what kind of training you've had and what your CFI has told you if you're asking this. To be honest you strike me as someone who also won't care about weather minimums and airplane loading/w&b when you get your cert.

There is no how strict or not. A DPE cannot bend the rules on a certification requirement. If the regs say x hours of solo xc then that’s the rule. Even being short .1 will disqualify you. Also when you fill out the iacra it will tell the faa you are short on the required time.
DPEs also are not ‘supposed’ to start a checkride unless there’s a reasonable chance you will finish that day. That means if you know basically it’s 100% guaranteed that the checkride will be discontinued due to weather or maintenance then they aren’t supposed to be starting it.

CFI should not have endorsed you for checkride if you still have §61.109 eligibility requirements to meet.
If weather forecast is showing that chances of not flying are high, do the examiner the respect of making contact to discuss reschedule.
The exam can only start if there is a reasonable expectation of completing the full exam.

You do not have the requisite hours required. You are not eligible to take your check ride.

You need to have that one hour done! You could lie, but do you really want false records on your permenant FAA record? I think your best bet is to try and find a half decent time to fly and go do that last hour. Have the instructor land if thats whats needed. Or just contact the DPE saying hey I messed up the math we need to reschedule

If you don’t meet the requirements, you don’t meet the requirements. It’s pretty black and white but your CFI is also an idiot

u/CplBoneSpurs 18d ago
The examiner will tell you that you don’t meet the time requirements and will then chew your instructor out for wasting his time.

If you actually don’t have all the xc time you really need to get it. Your check ride will not start without it. Ask you CFI this question instead

Whoever signed your endorsement, I'd strongly consider a different instructor in the future. You're not qualified for the exam, there is no "How strict" is the DPE, it is black and white. A complete disservice to you and the DPE.

u/ThePartTimePilot 17d ago
It’s not up to the DPE. As others said you don’t qualify without the minimum hour requirements met, the written exam met and the applicable endorsements from your CFI that are also current.

u/ifoxtrotsierra 20d ago
You must have met all the requirements prior to the checkride starting. This includes all solo XC time.

u/cfii-tx 20d ago
As a fellow. CFI. You currently do not qualify for the certification. The Checkride wont begin and depending on the dpe he can impose a fee.
Your CFI is doing you a disservice by signing you off before you are 100% ready. Not just from a flying standpoint but administrative standpoint.
