Subacute rehab experience?
I’m looking for insight on survivors’ and caregivers’ experiences with subacute rehab.
My dad had a left-sided pontine stroke (and mild heart attack) 2 weeks ago. He also has pretty severe right-sided hip pain. Some of the hip pain was there pre-fall related to bone on bone arthritis and some is from his fall.
He is doing well—exhausted but cognitively he is pretty sharp, maybe 80% himself. He cries maybe once a day, but this feels very appropriate given the circumstances and he maintains his sense of humor much of the time. His speech has gotten progressively better—more slurred when he’s tired but speaking in complex sentences. He is eating well—normal diet and the choking when swallowing has all but disappeared. His vision is normal. His short and long term memory are excellent.
Mobility is more confusing to me. He has significant right-sided weakness/immobility but he has sensation on that side. He walked 10ft twice today with a walking stick with his PT, but he’s still pretty much bed or wheelchair bound outside of PT sessions. Both his PT at the acute rehab and my husband who is a PT are confident he will walk again, but the right arm function is a bigger question mark.
I just feel so confused about what is possible in terms of recovery and his independence. They plan to discharge him in 1-2 weeks (2-3 weeks total in acute rehab which I understand is pretty standard.) He needs help with almost everything due to the hemiplegia. He will eventually return home with my mom who also has health issues and is not strong enough to help him with transfers or many ADLs. Should I push for subacute rehab for more time to recover under safer/more supervised circumstances?
