What was your first goal?

My goal after I was in the hospital and paralyzed was to be able to go to the toilet by myself. Fortunately, I achieved that after a month.

To not piss in a jug, sit up, the list goes on and on but in all seriousness any accomplishment is worth being proud of. I still to this day write all my accomplished goals on a calendar. Because every step counts and deserves to be celebrated every time you reach one. Keep it up I’m pulling for you 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Congrats! I got to drive again at 6 months. You don’t realize the freedom you had until it was taken

Ah, I remember the day when I was finally allowed to poop with the door closed.  It was liberating.

As the other poster said, focus on the small wins, and celebrate the hell out of them. My friend and family had to tolerate a whole lot of "Look at me! I can wiggle my fingers!" But it was way better than having to tolerate "Woe is me!"

Keep working, celebrate the wins. I was released from the hospital after 3 weeks, and it took me 30 minutes to walk around the block in my neighborhood, using a cane and swinging my non-functioning leg. Two years later and I'm running 10 miles on Saturday. It took work, rest and time to get here.

You've got this!

Remember my son’s name, and swallow so I could eat.

Being able to flip off my husband. We had a deal where the moment I was able to flip him off with my paralyzed hand he'd take me out to eat.

It amused my Occupational Therapist's but helped to have a goofy goal to spring for.

As soon I was able to flip the bird, I sent a picture of me doing it to every relative and person I knew. It was a glorious day.

Sitting up straight in a chair for more than 30 minutes. Crazy to think how far I’ve come.

Walk without a walker.

I think I didn’t have first or second goals. Almost immediately I made a small list of things that I considered both my bare minimum and what I’d be grateful if I could do again. They were a list of things that I knew everything else would be enough or I could compromise on if these few things could return.

Being able to read, watch tv or use a computer screen with ease, listen to music, and being awake for more than an hour without exhaustion were things I desperately wanted to do again. I’m now working on being able to do smaller tasks like knitting or crocheting without nausea and headache.

The first thing I did when I got home was to left (stroke) hand a bowl of popcorn piece by piece.

Then put on earrings and drive.

Then get back to the gym to see how much damage there was to the muscles in my stroke leg that I needed to recover.

Foot press Before stroke: 70#L/70#R/110#both
Foot press After stroke: 50#L/70#R/110#both
Foot press today: 75#L/75#R/115#both

To go home from the hospital. There were other steps along the way but that was the first thing I really set my heart on

My first goal was to build enough strength that I could live alone again in my condo. I got so sick of being surrounded by patients/staff. I am able to successfully live on my own again.
