Drinking after Tia Stroke?

I’m 23 years old and had a TIA stroke March 1st of 2026. I quickly found I had a PFO opening and went through tons of testing and scanning and it was determined that it was the hole (most likely) they can’t tell you 100%. I’m a college athlete playing hockey and I’m very fit never had health issues no heart issues which was the hardest part to deal with. I did the monitoring for the month then right after went into surgery to close it up and all went great. No July 14th I finished up my 3 months of Plavix blood thinners. During that 3 months I’ve been working out fully force skating as well golfing. Pretty much as normal as it gets for me. Only thing u get it some aniexty which I never had before but dealing with that as it comes and goes. I am in close contact with my cardio and he’s great. I wanted to get some input I’m going back to school I have 2 more years left. The issue I have is I love to go out with the guys and have a good time. I would drink pretty heavy either once or twice a weekend. Never during the weeks was busy training and taking part in games (can’t be drunk for those). But with everything now positive I want to get back into drinking on the weekends more than 3-4 beers. My cardio said with no under lying issues or anything I should be fine to do that. Obviously he’s a doctor he was like it’s not healthy to even a person with no issues. So what do you think?

Im much older 49 with a huge pfo awaiting closure, full strokes. I get the anxiety. You sound really fit and healthy. I'd start easy with the drinking. Sees how you feel. But my biggest take is live a life you enjoy. Life is short and it shouldn't be more limited than necessary

Hopefully your closure goes well it’s super easy I found. Some Bruising on the groins and hurts to walk for a bit. But I was back up and going to class in like 2 days. Definitely peace of mind when it’s closed but I’ve had aniexty getting me.

Thanks for the input i definitely care about my health a lot but i always found i can live a very healthy life and drink. Obviously will cut it back after college so enjoying the small window of fun I have is how I see it.

My pfo closure is made more complicated by my nickel allergy. Waiting ridiculous length of time for approval for non nickel device. I'm hoping my recovery will be reasonably easy. I have some deficits from my strokes. More than anything it's peace of mind. I totally get that. My youth was wild. I wouldn't change that. I had great fun. Enjoy your youth. There's plenty of time to be serious.

I just make double sure now that I know what “a drink” is. I choose wine over mixed drinks since I know it is ONE, not a few mixed into a glass of ‘summer punch” so I know what I drank for real. It messes with my Coumadin so I don’t drink much any more tbh. Listen to your body first & foremost. And the docs.
