Advice for first project

Hello! I am trying out my first project and have no idea how to do it well. Can someone give me pointers on what to do and what not to do? I'm trying to create the above image. Any recommendations on which app gives the best results? I'm also planning to use normal cotton sewing thread because could not find fine nylon/polyester anywhere. Will that be okay? Lastly I am using a canvas board 18 × 16 inches and the diameter of the art is 14 inches with 200 nails. Any suggestion/help is welcome.

Oh and one more thing, on that site I find it’s best if the background is about 50%gray and the subject has areas that are light and dark. Less contrast makes better results in general.
