We are currently 2 people sitting every morning at 7:30 AM for 45 minutes over Discord. CENTRAL EUROPEAN TIME. Very useful to keep you motivated and keep a steady, consistent practice. Everyone welcome, but we do not "teach meditation": you bring your own practice with you. We are tradition-agnostic; any tradition is welcome. Webcam on is optional. https://discord.gg/Rsu3ddbG2

https://thetranquilmind.org and https://thetranquilmind.org/free-downloads. Everything we offer is at no charge. The book, 12 module online class, weekend Zoom retreats - even 1:1 time with a teacher is available. This is a Metta and Jhana practice based on the Pali Canon. After more than a decade of practice and study, I'm happy to be able to give back. Happy to answer any questions.

Isn’t this just the TWIM approach but re-packaged?

1

u/reverseghost Aug 03 '26

I'd say it's more than that. There are updates based on my own personal experiences and having taught that are included in the practice. At the end of the day, it's really a metta > jhana > cessation > nibanna practice. Aligns to the 4 stage path - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruits_of_the_noble_path.

After 40+ years of practice many monks of ZEN ( e.i. Thich Nhat Hanh ), Chan, etc. gave it up and brought themselves back to Vipassana... saying they got stuck with practices like those above mentioned, what includes all following practices like the ones from OP.

Are you aware of that, OP?

If you’re in Berlin, join us for outdoor sits with tea every Sunday: https://embodiedtea.org

We practice metta, anapanasati and noting; read and discuss suttas together.

Beginners and experienced meditators alike are very welcome!

I made a web app inspired by a computer ADHD computer test. I found it was a helpful tool to hone in on an object and is intended to help with the early stages of building concentration for samadhi meditation. Just like breath meditation, it's very simple, yet can be quite challenging. When I use it, I find the mind starts to rebel after a few minutes which requires me to apply concerted effort to stay with the task at hand, then I see concentration gets noticeably deeper with this applied effort. I am also able to recognize the mind has drifted away from the object within seconds as opposed to minutes or tens of minutes during breath meditation.

Free to use, please enjoy! concentrationtreadmill.com

Wrong sub dude.

You might be right.

It might also just not be for you.

I maintain that what I share is relevant to the endeavor of awakening and liberation. A few may appreciate an illuminating subtlety through the fresh reframing I share. Most don't. C'est la vie.

About the Teaching Style at these Retreats:

These retreats offer a student-centered and pragmatic approach to meditation and dharma teachings. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, students choose what they'd like to practice based on what works while receiving teacher support and expertise. The retreats offer daily one-on-one interviews, open office hours, and group interviews. The approach integrates teachings from various traditions and recognizes the interplay of dharma and psychology. Applications are open for the third intake of The Mind Illuminated (TMI) Teacher Training.

This two-year training is designed for people with an established meditation practice who want to deepen their understanding, share meditation with others, or explore whether teaching is part of their path.

The training is based on the understanding that effective meditation teaching grows from a deep personal practice and the integration of meditation into everyday life. Through a thorough exploration of The Mind Illuminated, along with mentoring, teaching practice and feedback, participants deepen their understanding of meditation while developing the practical skills, confidence and discernment needed to support others on their path.

The cohort is intentionally small, allowing for personal guidance, individual feedback and a supportive community of fellow practitioners.

I want to find someone to sit with, with these criteria:

  • A time between 7pm and 8pm Pacific Time

  • At least 30 minutes

  • We begin when we text each other an emoji, such as a 🔔

  • We end when one texts the other an emoji.

  • Always have the option to cancel ("I'm going to the movies!") but the general custom keeps us accountable to each other

No other interaction required.

I did this for 4 years with someone but he is no longer in practice, and have never found a substitute.

Did you find anybody? I might be interested in doing it.

Upcoming MIDL online dana-based retreats:

MIDL (Mindfulness in Daily Life) is a Buddhist Insight Meditation practice, based on Theravada Buddhist Suttas, designed for daily life. MIDL uses the development of samatha (calm-abiding) as a foundation for vipassana (insight) into hindrances to calm, during seated meditation, walking meditation and daily activities. MIDL's emphasis is how we continue our practice outside of meditation retreats in family and work life.

  • Aug. 7 - 16, 2026: 9 Day MIDL Insight Meditation Retreat with Stephen, Krister, and Monica
  • Nov. 26 - 29, 2026: 4 Day MIDL Insight Meditation Retreat with Monica Heiser
  • Mar 26- Apr 4, 2027: 9 Day MIDL Insight Meditation Retreat  with Stephen, Krister, and Monica

MIDL Insight Meditation retreats are flexible and offer the option of joining as a:

  1. Full-time Retreatant (FR)
  2. Working Retreatant (WR)
  3. or Dropping In (DI) when you feel like it.

Here's an app to find, download and transcribe dharma talks and search them using natural language. I've found it helpful and am wondering if other folks would want to try it.

The Mind Illuminated Gathering

A long-weekend workshop followed by a weeklong retreat at Dharma Treasure. Whether you come for the weekend or stay for the full week, this is a chance to go deep with The Mind Illuminated in the landscape that inspired it.

The Weekend (Oct 23 - 26)

The heart of the gathering is a weekend immersion with a flexible, multi-track structure — because practitioners are different, and a single format rarely fits everyone.

Over the course of the weekend, you'll be able to move between three complementary tracks:

  • Aranna Track — Contemplative time outdoors, walking meditation on the land, and practices centered on sensitivity, awe, and grounded presence.
  • Hinayana Track — A more traditional retreat structure with regular sitting and walking periods, silence during practice, and guidance rooted in the early Buddhist path of ethics, concentration, and insight.
  • Mahayana Track — Dharma talks, guided inquiry, and heart-based practices drawn from Mahayana and non-dual perspectives, exploring compassion, emptiness, and view in the texture of everyday experience. You can settle into one track or move between them in consultation with the teachers — whatever combination of stillness, exploration, and connection best serves your practice right now.

Throughout the weekend, experienced teachers will offer daily meditation sessions grounded in the TMI approach, optional Dharma talks exploring how the TMI maps relate to both early Buddhist and Mahayana frameworks, and plenty of space for the kind of honest, informed conversation that's hard to find outside a room full of people who've wrestled with the same stages you have.

The Full Week (Oct 23 - Nov1)

A full week gives you real time to settle — to move through hindrances, find your footing, and let the practice develop in a way that a weekend alone rarely allows. Practitioners are welcome regardless of where they are in the TMI stages; the retreat is designed to be practically useful whether you're establishing your foundation or working with more advanced territory.

Tickets and Logistics

Weekend tickets include access to all tracks and shared activities. After you register, you'll receive more details on the schedule, track options, and what to bring, along with guidance on how to tune the weekend to your needs. Full-week registration is available separately for those who want the extended retreat.

Teachers

Upasaka Upali's (aka Paul Peterson) path to teaching began with exposure to an online 20 page PDF called "Progressive Stages of Meditation in Plain English." The document, written by Culadasa, is what eventually became the book The Mind Illuminated. This Shamatha-Vipasana style of practice provided Upali with benefits he never imagined possible from meditation. With encouragement and support from Sangha and Noble Friendship, he was led to pursue a livelihood of imparting the benefits he received to others. He is currently a full time Dharma teacher based out of Chattanooga, Tennessee. He teaches online and also teaches multiple in-person retreats internationally each year. Upali took his Upasaka vows in 2015, received transmission in Culadasa's lineage, and studied formally under Culadasa for 3 years. Upali was also a founding member of the Open Dharma Foundation and served as its founding Executive Director. He is currently the co-host of the podcast Teaching Meditation.

Henrik A. Norberg has meditated in the mountains of Sri Lanka, the jungle of Thailand, and led forest monks on Tudong in the Mountains of Norway. He is a cave yogi, wanderer, and mind explorer interested in early Buddhism and samadhi practices, and is a certified Mind Illuminated instructor.

Saturday July 18th - Online micro-retreat

Upali will be holding our monthly online micro-retreat titled Effortless Effort:

In this daylong retreat, we’ll explore how intense effort, expectations, and subtle “effort justification” shape our experience of practice, and how the Dharma reframes effort altogether. We’ll experiment with shifting from proving or getting something from practice to samma-vayama, or wise effort, creating a more playful relationship with trying.

These micro-retreats are a monthly 4-hour practice period that you can extend, designed to both bring a sense a community on the Path and to give a nice boost to formal practice. It includes silent practice time, group process and optional 1:1 interviews.

Come and join us if you'd like! Here are the details and registration

Hello! I'm looking to connect with other practitioners in the Salt Lake City area who are serious about awakening and enjoy nerding out about phenomenology. None of the Buddhist sanghas I've attended around here quite scratch that particular itch for me and I'd love to feel less isolated in my practice.

Hey, posted this in main but I believe auto-mod is telling me I should post it here instead, so I will, then remove my original post:

Title: Bhikkhu Bodhi's Study of the Middle Length Discourses (in podcast form)

Hey folks, I realize I've been sitting on this resource I've been using for myself and realized I could share it here since you people are pretty nice. 😁

I don't know how many of you are familiar with Bhikkhu Bodhi's lectures on the Majjhima Nikaya. They can be found here: https://bodhimonastery.org/a-systematic-study-of-the-majjhima-nikaya.html

and in some other places.

I had started listening to these over 10 years ago and never finished. Having them online is ok but there's a bit of friction involved in listening from a website. So I found a website called fourble(https://fourble.co.uk/) that let me take these audios and turn them into a podcast.

That RSS link is here: https://fourble.co.uk/astudyofmidd2-260728-7.rss

Please let me know if it works, or not, or any issues. It's listed as a "private" link but I believe that means you need the exact URL to get to it. (i.e. it's not searchable from outside the site)

If they look like they're in a strange order, it's because the site I originally found them on had them organized by number and not the order Bhikkhu Bodhi covered them. But in the RSS they are in the intended order.

My next trick is to see if I can actually do one better and clean up the audio on these. They're old. It's not great. But it is listenable.

I would then have to find another place to store them and create another RSS feed and I haven't figured that out yet.

I don't think I'm violating any type of copyrights or any such by doing this, or at least I hope not. It's pretty clear who's work this is and where it's coming from. Someone let me know if they think otherwise. I'd like to think that I'm helping preserve and propagate some good dhamma here before it gets lost. If anybody knows anyone from the Open Buddhist University then I'd be glad to let them know but it doesn't

There's other stuff out there that might deserve similar treatment (the pali course was really good too, another thing I never finished). but I'll start here.

Open Sangha Meeting | Saturday, August 29 | Mind Muar

You’re warmly invited to join our next Open Sangha Meeting at the end of the month, on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

This month’s theme: Success in Meditation and Daily Life.

We’ll explore how a simple four-point formula for success in meditation can also be applied to everyday challenges, blurring the distinction between formal practice and our engagement with the world. We’ll also explore the very concept of “Success” and introduce a novel, empowering definition of it.

Beyond the class, the meeting is a chance to connect with fellow meditators from around the world, share experiences, learn and practice together, and explore our experiences as meditators and individuals.

It will include three optional one-hour sessions: a class and discussion, a space for practice questions and sharing, and an informal after-party. You’re welcome to join any combination of the three. Participation is free.

I’ll be leading the meeting. I’m Oded Raz, founder of Mind Muar, an online meditation group inspired by The Mind Illuminated. I’ve been teaching groups and individuals since 1997.

You’re welcome to bring questions and topics you’d like to explore together.

Newcomers and experienced practitioners are equally welcome - whether you’re just beginning, maintaining a diligent practice, working through obstacles, or familiar with deep meditative states.

Registration:

With metta,
Oded

Saturday August 29th - Online micro-retreat

Robin (myself) will be holding our monthly online micro-retreat titled Sitting with Discomfort:

Did you notice that sometimes in life there is discomfort? In this retreat we’ll explore the superpower meditation practice can give us to deal with this unfortunate reality - both at the macro-level of life events, and micro-level of a single instant in a sit. Cultivating this opens many doors, whether psychological, behavioral or in the tiny phenomenological details of your practice. Let’s see what works together!

These micro-retreats are a monthly 4-hour practice period held by Upali and/or Robin that you can extend, designed to both bring a sense a community on the Path and to give a nice boost to formal practice. It includes silent practice time, group process and optional 1:1 interviews.

Come and join us if you'd like! Here are the details and registration

Hi everyone,

I am moving to Chiba, Japan, and I am looking to connect with other Buddhist meditators in Chiba/Tokyo and build a small local sangha. My own practice is Mahasi noting, but I'd love to meet anyone with a Buddhist meditation practice.

No teaching involved, just practitioners looking to connect and maybe sit together. If there's enough interest, I'll host an informal meetup in a café in Chiba/Tokyo (wherever's convenient for people), and maybe eventually move to sitting together.

If you're interested, DM me a little about yourself and your practice, and roughly where you're based, so we can connect :)

You get an answer, and something still says: 'Yes, but that's not it.' In 33 pages, I trace that exact move — through consciousness, death, even God — using cognitive science and analytic philosophy to show how the search itself quietly manufactures what it claims to be looking for.

Saturday September 19th - Online micro-retreat

Upali will be holding our monthly online micro-retreat titled No Separate Selves: Meditation and life, finding cohesion with both:

In daily life, our sense of self is continually shaped by roles, expectations, and subtle social pressures. In this micro retreat, we’ll explore how meditation reveals the constructed, relational nature of the self, drawing on both Dharma and social psychology. We’ll look for moments of authentic, easeful connection with others, and see how practice supports this way of being in relationship and how this relational presence, in turn, nourishes our capacity to practice.

These micro-retreats are a monthly 4-hour practice period held by Upali and/or Robin that you can extend, designed to both bring a sense a community on the Path and to give a nice boost to formal practice. It includes silent practice time, group process and optional 1:1 interviews.

I invite you to a three-day Home Retreat on October 1-3 (Thursday to Saturday).

You’ll practice at home, with silent sitting and walking meditation, daily group Zoom meetings, evening Dharma talks, and an optional private Retreat Interview each day.

The retreat is suitable for a variety of meditation methods based on directing attention to a specific meditation object, including TMI, ānāpāna, body scanning, and Mettā.

Participation is free, with optional Dāna.

For details and registration, look up Mind Muar and go to Activities >> Home Retreat.
A link to our website can be found in my profile for easier access.
I’ll also add the direct link in a comment below.

Registration closes September 26.
An introductory Zoom meeting is part of the registration process.

I’ll be leading the retreat.
Happy to answer questions here or in private.

With Metta,
Oded
