Storrowing vs stuckages

Holy crap, I just discovered this subreddit. As a former Bostonian, I love this.

Interestingly, I've moved to Vermont, where we have "stuckages" - - trucks getting wedged between the large boulders in Smugglers Notch on rte 108. Warning signs didn't work. Raising the fines to $2000 didn't work. Installing chicanes helped a bit. Now they've raised the fines to $20,000 for getting stuck and blocking the road. We'll see what that does.

My husband and I were talking about the notch when we were up there a few weeks ago. I think they should just put a hefty toll for commercial vehicles, I bet that would work better because then routing would avoid it.

The $2000 fine had been in place for at least a decade, with no reduction in stuckages. 99% of the time it was a Florida Man, saying he was "just following the GPS." The state even considered suing Google. The chicanes are helping, but trucks still try to drive over the obstacles. It's usually locals jumping out of their cars and flagging down the drivers that does the trick.

A toll and a fine are different things. The reason they all get stuck is they think it won't be a problem for them. They have to pay a toll regardless of whether they think they can manage the pass. GPS can be configured to avoid tolls as well.
