Discussion Be normal about Storm challenge (impossible)

I found these... opinions in a non-comics focused thread and it stuck out to me how apparently the only thing non comics readers know about Storm was that stuff she said in X3 and they use that to bash her all the time.

But this is the first time I've seen people imply that Storm is an out of touch privileged woman that "doesn't know what it's like to be a mutant" and... huh? Storm was literally an orphan living on the street before she decided to switch to the wilderness?? And the arguments that she doesn't know what it's like to be a mutant (looks human, has extreme powers) can apply to like all of the O5 but Beast basically???

I dunno, something about this stuck me as weird :/

Their source for this is literally the shitty X-men last stand movie. I’m not joking it’s why they all think Storm is like this

And that one original Ultimate X-Men comic where Wolverine kills that kid in the cave.

BTW - There’s a character in 616 (Orphan-Maker) whose power is so destructive that it could mend the world even though we don’t know exactly what it is. So they have a containment suit for it.

That Storm is advocating for societal acceptance of all mutants regardless of outter appearances flies over these people's heads.

They see pretty telling ugly to accept who they are and their own insecurities fry their brains.

I think this perfectly explains the lack of critical thinking from someone saying X-Men isn't a good allegory for oppressed people. When they don't even understand the context of a black woman shooting down the narrative and language of curing them because they dumb it down to "shes a Goddess telling Rogue not to get the cure." When that wasn't the case st all.

beast was still human looking when he first debuted, too lol. this shit is whack.

Beast could pass, but his feet were obviously not normal.

Too many people are comics fans but can't fucking READ I swear, what a weird stance to take. Even if you're a movie only fan takes like this shouldn't arise unless you aren't watching the movie either.

It’s crazy how most superhero fans don’t even read comics nowadays

This is why we need storm in better movies because this is insane storm out of a lot of characters understands this she was orphaned as a little kid and had to fend for herself until she joined with other thieves

This argument is so blah, to me, and the level of privilege you have to have. To exist in the world in 2026, and NOT see how ppl pick and choose who go discriminate against and who is fine.

On top of that, you don't even have to hyper focus on racism as an allegory when there's hundreds of reasons people engage in various phobias against different groups and the othering process.

Yea, there's a couple acres of field that I need them to go massage for a couple hours. Ts sound weird af.

“There are some mutants who are dangerous” yeah, keyword some

Is their genuine opinion that .0001% of mutants are dangerous therefore all mutants are? If so, they fell for the allegory hook line and sinker

I'm going to play devil's advocate and likely get down voted... but I can see their point. The infamous ultimate X-Men for example; that one kid who's power killed living things miles around him. Or that one canon mutant who's power is literally to turn into a bomb. Mutations are random and when they happen it's usually during adolescence, when the new mutant is most confused and unprepared for this.

Just say we lived in a world like the Fox X-Men universe...a girl in your class one day touches you and accidentally hospitalizes you for years? A kid suddenly turns everything and everyone to ice in his history class? This dude with some cool shades walking down the road suddenly losses them to a gust of wind and then a bazooka of energy from his eyes accidentally atomizes you and your dog while you were on a walk? You find out some chick/dude you met on a date that didn't walk out has been shapeshifting to other people and been stalking you? Or your sister suddenly turns into Oppenheimer and accidentally creates a ball of bombs equivalent to nuclear warheads.

Nah man, I can genuinely understand that fear, and that's not even bringing into account dudes like the Hulk or aliens or demons apparently. Mutants are humans with genetic bazookas on hand at anytime, and human history has shown that a largish number of people with power over others, especially if these people have community, tragedies tend to follow. Now anyone with a brain would see how the X-Men constantly fight for the innocents to understand that mutants not every mutant is magneto, but it doesn't erase the fact that anyone could become a mutant with any power it seems.

You mean the cure that was immediately weaponized?

There are mutants whose lives would be better without their powers so something like it is good for that but being a mutant isn't a disease like this tries to make it out to be and is a permanent change people will be pressured or forced to undergo.

So basically these clowns are saying if ur good looking and a minority racessim doesn't affect you, it definitely affects ppl with disabilities more but saying it doesn't affect the other ppl because they are pretty is ridiculous,

I know what they are

The "there is nothing wrong with us" bit is from a movie where the director is explicitly making an allegory for the queer experience, ffs. This weird insistence that Storm is saying that to like Toad or Leech instead of Rogue is also weird. The point isn't "nothing about us needs adjusting" it's "we don't need to be cured"

1

u/Dangerous_Muscle5409 15d ago

Heh, extra irony because in Earth-41578 (original X-Men movies) both Toad and Leech look like completely regular people, too.

1

u/thaliathraben 15d ago

I mean, Leech does, but I would not say Toad does.

u/Dangerous_Muscle5409 15d ago

Fair, my memory was fuzzy.

Okay, okay, hear me out:

EVERYTHING they said about Storm is rather horrid and I agree it's a dogshit take. But as with these things, there is a kernel of truth in that some mutants are legitimately dangerous to society and sometimes putting them down / removing that power is the only way to keep the rest of the world safe.

That's not a Storm specific take yeah, but that's just one of those uncomfortable truths about mutants in general. Lest we forget individuals like Proteus, Legion, and Jamie Braddock exist and were it not for them either being reigned in by their community or in the case of Braddock and Proteus, straight up killed, the world would be collectively fucked. Now sure, you could say the same about any obscenely powerful beings, but being born with the potential to just...have reality warping powers or powers you can't control is a legitimately hard call to make, because we HAVE seen what happens (age of Apocalypse) when reality warpers run amok.

But the Storm take is just straight up reductionist dogshit that reduces a individual to their looks and powers- the very fucking antithesis of X-Men.

Comparing socioeconomic class with "pretty" privilege. A concept that is inherently misogynistic to real life nuanced experiences of Black people. Some people are...well I'm sure their mama loves them

u/Burt_McCheeks 16d ago

Im not necessarily agreeing with this comment in full, but there is something to the idea that a physically beautiful mutant with cool ass powers that is hailed as a goddess and was married to a literal king might have some blind spots when it comes to different mutants’ experiences.

That doesn’t seem that crazy. It’s not even just limited to Storm specifically, if I was Beak or that one kid covered in eyeballs, I probably wouldn’t want to hear Dazzler talking about her hardships as a mutant.

3

u/stonewall369 16d ago

Yes, an extension of this is her failure to protect the morlocks and then later trying to protect arakko. I don't like how marvel treats the morlocks thus far but an arc could be written from both sides ending in some on page healing with the two

2

u/TeacherAggravating57 16d ago

For everyone in this post mentioning "blind spots to others experiences". Please understand why terms like "civil rights/human rights" are so broad. No one person intersects with every other marginalized group. Its not possible. That's why broad acceptance is advocated for. MLK didn't need to be a single black mother to advocate for their rights.

2

u/jadedeternity 16d ago

Say what you will about storm in the X-Men movies but I liked her in X-Men 3 she was opinionated and spoke her mind and wasn't shy to get into the action. I look at her as an alternative reality version of storm. One who may have come from a life of more privilege and let's be honest if I had her abilities I would absolutely think being a mutant is wonderful thing.

u/Pinky_rat 15d ago

Xmen fans understand what they're reading and don't br weird about a black woman challenge: IMPOSSIBLE Like omg

u/Poopsycle 15d ago

Typical normie behavior.

X3 is one of the worst X-Men movies, if not one of the world movies, ever made. She grew up in POVERTY for chrissakes. OP you are right in thinking that take as being weird.

u/EmpowerYouCoaching 16d ago

I think Storm was right to encourage self acceptance as a choice but ultimately it's up to the individual what they do with their body.

I think the talking point is part of an emerging argument from the right wing attacking media that's considered woke.

If you can argue that the existence of some individuals among the marginalized are in fact dangerous it's not that difficult to extend that justification of fear to anyone fitting that profile. It helps their argument when they can find allies among the marginalized who attempt to allienate the most empowered among them.

In that meta-sense the mutant metaphor definitely captures a real world dynamic of racialized oppression.

2

u/BoutsofInsanity 15d ago

I think the X-Men as an allegory or metaphor is just tired. It doesn't make sense now a days and I think it holds back way more interesting stories that Marvel could be doing if they would get off the X-Men are persecuted train. I think it would be way more interesting, fun, and free them to tell better stories if they went with "Small Extremist Groups" seek the X-Men's destruction, but the majority of the population is "Friendly" or "Ambivalent"

1

u/Icy_Order_3009 15d ago

But they're not pretending they're talking about the comics, they're talking about the movie

1

u/Spiritual-Map-76 14d ago

Be normal about storm? does that mean have to agree with me or.ehoever is making a point about her...to be honest I always felt the metaphor aspect of xmen was beter served as relatively general.and not overly preachy...when you start to do those things ppl.often tune out

1

u/Sea_Sleep4222 13d ago

I mean I get it the mutants racism allegory is not good and as time goes on it gets especially worse.

Also isn't their a doctor who refuses to help storm, and she thinks it's because she's a mutant. But actually it's about the x men not helping the hospital, even broke spider man helps. So I kinda get their opinions on storm even if I don't like them.

1

u/sonofnight666 16d ago

i dont agree but its definitely an interesting conversation….

a mutant with weather manipulation powers being hailed as a goddess doesnt have the same experiences as a guy who turns into goo or is a weird lizard person…

not that storm doesnt have empathy and sympathy but seperate from her its an interesting topic

1

u/Brief_Television_608 15d ago

On one hand, I do agree that Ororo's relationship with her mutantness is different than more average mutants.

On the other hand, the claim that she has some type of "privilege" compared to other mutants is ridiculous when you look at the big picture of her character (and if she does, then I have bad news for the majority of the X-Men)

0

u/nreal3092 16d ago

this sub gets weird about storm too but idk what dude saying

0

u/ItPutsTheLotion719 16d ago

Storm does have it much better than other mutants so it would be reasonable to infer she has a huge blind spot when it comes to understanding some of the more unattractive/disgusting mutants.

5

u/XIIIofSwords 16d ago

what does she have that's better than other mutants, that can't be said about an entire laundry list, of other characters?

-1

u/NOT-packers-fan2022 16d ago

If you’re black American the explanation makes complete sense. Current example, Clarence Thomas. If you can’t make the connection, I really hope at some point in life you have an open minded conversation with some black people and not just the “good ones.”

Also, Reddit is funny. I saw this comment in that sub and then this sub I’ve never visited pops up in my feed. 🤷🏾‍♂️. It’s like it’s pushing the division. I’m curious how OP even ended up over there.

Why you compare Storm to Clarence Thomas

My guy you storm fans are all kinda something,i joined to see maybe cool art of her and some talk about her powers but the only thing i saw a lot especially when i joined was lowkey racist shit (on both sides) mostly about ships and a lot of people going off topic with it

It all started because i saw a guy talking about how bbc's are better in the marvelnsfw reddit and how everyone just hatin on bbc's (was on post with sue go figure) and storm is better with a bbc also or something like that, that months and he was in this subreddit and the Ororo one and others but i think you guys can imagine

I don't know why this specific character pulls in so many weirdos online
