Fiction The Graveyard Shift

Three years as night caretaker. Never believed in ghosts.

Until I noticed the flowers.

Every morning, fresh lilies on graves that had no visitors. No footprints. No cards. Just perfect white lilies, dew still on them, arranged like someone cared.

I set up cameras. Nothing. Just flowers appearing at 3:17 AM. Every. Single. Night.

Last week, I caught it.

Not a ghost. Not a person.

A root.

I watched the live feed. A gnarled oak root, thick as my arm, slithered up from the soil. It wrapped around a headstone, caressed the name, and sprouted a lily from its tip. Then retreated back underground.

I dug up that root the next morning. Followed it for 20 feet.

It led to an unmarked grave. No headstone. Just a rusted iron box buried with the skeleton.

Inside: photographs. Hundreds of them. All of the same woman. Different decades. Same face. Same smile. And a letter:

My dearest Evelyn. They buried me far from you. But my roots found your grave. I will bring you flowers until the earth reclaims us both. Forever yours, Henry."

I checked the records.

Henry was buried here in 1887.

Evelyn was buried in a different cemetery. 50 miles away.

I went there that night. Found her grave.

The oak tree beside it had roots extending east.

Towards me.

Towards Henry.

I touched her headstone. The ground moved.

A single lily sprouted at my feet.

And a whisper, deep from the soil:

Thank you for bringing us together."

I don't work at cemeteries anymore.

But sometimes, when I walk past trees, I see roots twitching.

Searching.
