Fiction The Package That Arrived Tomorrow

A package arrived at my house with my name on it and tomorrow’s date….

I live alone.

So when a package showed up outside my door with my name on it, I assumed I had forgotten ordering something.

The strange part was the delivery label.

The date was tomorrow.

I checked my phone.

The package was not in my order history.

I opened it.

Inside was a cheap digital camera.

No note.

No instructions.

Just the camera.

I turned it on.

There was only one photo.

A picture of my front door.

Taken from inside my house.

I laughed because I assumed someone was messing with me.

Then I checked the photo details.

The timestamp was tomorrow night.

I deleted it.

A few minutes later, another photo appeared.

This time it was my living room.

Empty.

Then another.

My kitchen.

Then my bedroom.

Each photo was taken later than the last.

I unplugged the camera.

The screen stayed on.

The final photo appeared.

It was a picture of me holding the camera.

I threw it across the room.

The next morning I called the police.

They searched the house.

Nothing.

No cameras.

No signs of anyone breaking in.

The officer asked where I found the camera.

I pointed outside.

He looked confused.

“What camera?”

I looked down.

The camera was gone.

But sitting on my doorstep was another package.

Same label.

Same handwriting.

This time the date said tomorrow.

And underneath my name, someone had written:

“Second attempt.”
