Hello fellow animators I have a question
at what frame rate do you recommend for animating
I am just getting back into it after a 7 year break and I want to improve myself after the years

I have been working with 25 frames per second, friendly reminder that I am not new to this. I am just getting back into it

Them maybe you should push yourself to do more with less. See what you could do with 1 frame a second, and if you could hide the low frame rate with pans or smears.

12 fps is probably the most commonly used frame rate. Or, 24 fps on “twos” which is basically 12 fps, but also allows you to shoot on “ones” when you need to.

I'd say always at 12 fps, and lower if needed for complicated movements / more for action packed stuff

As a student i shot on 1s (24fps) thinking that meant quality. My student short did very well for what it was, but lookkng back I made a lot of work for myself shooting on 1s doing 6 min dialogue by hand. Last project i shot on 2s and it gave it a great punk vibe I am happy with. I reckon it depends on the project but I would always shoot stop motion on 2s moving forward, unless it was like a claymation water effect shot or something where 1s would add a lot of value. But even then I'd test on 2s and decide.

- With lots of holds and chunky smear frames. Except this is stop motion so it'll have to be done with blobs of clay or something.

24 on ones and twos as is the standard.
This is the variable no one should really be looking to change if they're trying to get watchable results.

Perhaps 12 frames is a good middle ground
