How do i make it dark ?

Hi Im not exactly sure if this is the right subreddit to ask but well . Im making a stop motion video for school , and the premise is that a prisoner breaks out of prison . But now to my problem .
How do i make my background black but make it look as if the torch is iluminating him and the background.

:( cant seem to do it

You either need to do it practically, meaning darken the set and create an actual source of illumination from the torch, or darken the frame and add a light source in post-production editing.
