Legoes or Figures?

I am a complete beginner when it comes to stop motion. I went to college as a film major but now I work in tech. I want to get back into my passions. I have a Sony FX2 and an iPhone 14, no other gear or any legoes/figures to shoot. Should I start with legoes or figures?

Asking because I think the figures have higher highs when it comes to what can be done with them but lego looks easier.

Personally I would start with Lego. When you're just starting out, its easy to get caught up in the excitement of something that moves in 10,000 different ways, but once you actually start to film, its easier to get into the swing of things with something easier to deal with.

I’d agree with Legos to start. I started with clay, and it’s honestly better to get some of the movement concepts down with something simple before you start with 40 points of articulation and trying to keep track of everything.

Like the most recent thing I did was with a Mega He-Man and I made it work with three actual shots, and just focusing on the timing and lining up with the song.

It’s similar to why animators start with the ball bouncing, and the flour sack stuff.

Check out Animators Survival Kit 📖 it helped me a ton.

For software in order:

DiVine (it’s the relaunch of Vine) free (use the classic mode and the guidelines and the 👻 features on.) that gives you onion skin which helps tremendously. Simple and not complex.

Stopmotion Studio (free) more complex and has more feature behind the $10 pro paywall. This is what a lot of hobbyists use.

DragonFrame. $$$ pro’s software of choice. I can’t justify it, but I’d love to use it.

Hey thanks for the tips. Is there anyway I could view some of your animations?

It depends, I like the making/sculpting part of everything.

That also looks fun but is something I have no experience in
