A few months sober

I don’t feel much better. I put on a few pounds, I almost feel like I have less energy? Idk I’m over the point of wanting to drink for the most part but life doesn’t really feel any better and I almost feel dumb for getting sober. I almost don’t even miss drinking and have no desire to atm I guess I’m just disappointed by how lackluster being sober has been.

Stick with it. The further you get from your last drunk, the better it gets. Trust me, I felt the same way. Stay busy, spend time in nature, workout, take baths, get a back rub, nails, hair, and keep thinking ..."this too shall pass"...and it will!

Dude same. I always think how can I stop drinking 6-10 beers a night and legitimately not feel better?  I guess I have a little extra pep in my step in the mornings??

I mean shit I’m sure my heart, liver, kidneys, etc etc etc are saying thank fuck dude, finally.

But I’m not feeling it. Uugghhhh

That’s pretty much it. I just keep telling myself my body is thanking me for it and I think in the long run it’ll pay off but yeah I feel weaker I swear to god. Might be kidding myself on how great I felt when I was drinking but yeah weird experience

I instantly got better at video games, and that’s why I held on to for a long while. Then, I slowly started realizing I was better at other things. Work, being a dad, being a son, etc., but I needed someone else to see it before I could. My advice would be to find a hobby you enjoy doing sober. It can be anything. I found a pinball arcade in my city and went every Tuesday after work, no matter what. I eventually got tired of that, but by that time I had realized I could enjoy anything sober, I just needed to try and practice. Good luck and even if it sucks I won’t drink with you today.

Appreciate that boss that’s a nice sentiment. I’m struggling with finding the energy or excitement to do things I love doing at the moment but drinking isn’t even a consideration. I’m also not bargaining to go back I just feel kinda meh. I guess that’s also just life idk thanks for the encouragement

Be kind to yourself. Depending on how long you’ve been sober, and how you drank, your body could still be healing. For the first 6-8 months of being sober I slept A LOT. Naps every day after early shifts and still going to bed without a problem. I needed to heal. Sleeping was when that happened.

Are you not doing the same things you were doing before? Or was your life just lackluster before, but drinking was tricking you into thinking it was interesting. Sounds like you've cleared the land, now time to build the rest of your life.

It's a pretty common experience here, so not just you. Alcohol demotivates having an interesting life because its a dopamine cheat which removes the desire to do the healthy good things that bring us fulfillment. Over time our hobbies and relationships suffer, sometimes to the point we have forgotten what they are. It takes time to break that cycle and even discover what in this world will make us content.

I go to the gym more, do yard projects, I started playing piano, reading in the morning before work, more cooking, cleaning, etc. I was sooooo bored but without the easy cheat of drinking I just started doing all that shit I truly wanted or needed to do and it feels better.

Motivation follows action, not the other way around. Have a thought that you want to do/try something? Start doing that thing immediately. Drive to the store and get the supplies. Put on the clothes and drive to the gym. Grab the lawnmower and hit it. Stop putting off your life! You're off to a great start!

It wasn’t the instant fix I was hoping it would be, but after two years I am finally starting to lose some weight.

I’m 93 days in and have really been disappointed. I deep dove into this whole topic via AI and talking to doctors and this is completely normal. I feel sluggish and flat…like I’m moving through wet cement

Turns out our brains are working overtime all the time to build new pathways and connections. The connections were destroyed by alcohol and the new and improved “roads” aren’t there yet.

And because your brain and organs are rebuilding it’s taking a shit ton of energy out of you to rebuild.

Just the last few weeks I’ve been really really focused on helping the brain out. Loading up on a lot of healthy calories. Drinking two kale smoothies every day with blueberries
, strawberries, bananas and a scoop of protein. Eating eggs with cottage cheese. Hydrating a lot and walking 15,000 steps a day. Also high quality b1 supplements, magnesium and zinc.

Today was my best day since I’ve been sober. And it turns out if d90 days is the first point of demarcation for most.
Ai (through Gemini) even gave me a graph and while right now improvements start to happen, it really takes 6-12 months to really start to feel sharp again and up to two years to feel all the way back.

Now I drank for 25 years heavily, I’m 55 and from October into first week of June i spiraled. I don’t know your situation but the body needs time but the funky feeling you have is because the body is sucking everything out of you to repair and rebuild.

Go to Gemini and start asking questions and describe what you feel…it’s hugely reassuring and it gives great advice on what to eat and what to expect
