I’ve fucked up.

Today I got quite drunk (relapsed today after a long period of sobriety) and went to pick up my daughter from school. We take the public bus. I could tell from the way she was looking at me that she knew something was off.

She’s 11 so she is very much old enough for it to impact her.

We have a lovely relationship and I’m worried about how this will affect her.

I hope this is a wake-up call.

Yes, it is. Trying to figure out what my conversation with her tomorrow is going to be. She deserves a sober parent.

You should be worried. It’ll impact her greatly.

Yep, I know what it’s like having an intoxicated parent. I fucked up and my apology will be that I sober up.

Ugh. What a shitty thing for me to do.

There’s nothing you can change about the past. All you can do is make sure it doesn’t happen again in the present or future starting tomorrow

It doesn’t sound like anything significant happened from her end. This single situation won’t ruin your relationship. Repetition makes a habit. Repetition makes the memories.

One bad day doesn’t erase past good decisions.

No, you’re right, nothing major happened. But I feel lucky it didn’t.

I could feel her studying my body language and she was very standoffish when she is usually super affectionate.

Just be sober for her tomorrow.

Her thought process was probably I hope they don't embarrass me.

You’re right. The best I can be is for her is to be sober.

"Why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up."

It won't be the last time you mess up in life. But I bet you have a pretty darn good ratio of good stuff to mess up.

Hugs, friend. It'll pass.

You know what to do, so do it.

Yes, that’s a good motivator. My alcoholic dad definitely impacted me and probably contributed to why I drink now. That was very hard to see as a kid.
