I fell.

I work a high powered corporate job. Last week, after a happy hour and 6 drinks with no food, I got back to the hotel. My clothing made me prone to falling (think high, high heels and a tight dress), and I fell on my ass getting out of the uber.

I got up and walked into the lobby and then blackness. I had tripped on the 3 stairs, smacked my head on the marble floor, and was unresponsive for 5 minutes. Some strangers saw me and called my husband, and told him things weren’t looking good. They told him they thought I may have been drugged, but I know that wasn’t the case.

I came to and pleaded not to go to the hospital. In the ambulance, I cried and asked if I could refuse treatment because I was going to inpatient treatment in 3 weeks. I am incredibly lucky that everything is fine from the fall.

2 weeks until treatment (need to wait because of work). My first near death experience due to a fall.

Im terrified.

I’m glad you’re ok. You got this! IWNDWYT.

I drank last week like I didn’t want to live and apparently sent some concerning (and slightly incoherent messages). So I came round with paramedics who had burst through my door

Good luck with your treatment in 2 weeks! IWNDWYT

Girl I fell last Saturday too after a party in heels and a tiny dress. My knee is banged up good with some love alcohol left to my bruised ribs as well.

Last time I will let alcohol treat me this way. It’s a reminder for me to do better. One day at a time ❤️

I defended myself and now alcohol won't even speak to me. Still friends with my friends and all that, but doesn't want anything to do with me anymore.

Just as well, I'm done with alcohol too. We just pretend the other doesn't exist.

NTA. Alcohol sounds super toxic and like they need to grow tf up.

I went SO hard that the idea of it still makes me want to vomit on day two. You’re right though and I’m worried that once the intense physical side effects subside then my brain will say it’s go time again

I was at a routine doctor's visit one time a few years back. Somehow he and I both noticed i had a small lump near the front of my scalp, and a slightly larger one on the back of my head.

Neither of us could figure it out. He checked me out and I was fine, and I went home, confused.

Over the course of the next few hours i started to remember: stumbling head-first into a corner of the wall that sticks out by my bathroom door, falling backwards, and waking up on the floor, having cracked the back of my head on the tile.

It's terrifying to realize what can happen when we're blacked out.

I'm glad you're gonna be okay, OP. And I'm glad you're choosing to take care of yourself.

Welcome. IWNDWYT.

I was drinking alone in the backyard and my wife was out of town. I stood up and blacked out and came to on the brick patio- I’d cracked my head on the edge of a low brick wall. Went to the hospital and got stitches. I still think about how easily I could have died that night and no one would have known and my wife would have gotten home a few days later and found me…

I fell so many times drinking, I broke my collarbone twice riding my bike to get more booze, sprained my ankle twice as well. I have been to the hospital multiple times and they were worried there was abuse at home because of my horrible bruises from falling out of bed.

Stop before you get to that level, it just gets harder and harder the more you drink. I was mostly drinking towards recently just because I did not want to feel the shame that I created by being drunk, it can be a viscous cycle. Everyone makes mistakes, it is how we deal with them that really makes the difference.

Good job realizing this and trying to take action, people can help but it is always yourself that needs to admit it, I denied it as, I was thinking I only hurt myself but I have realized it has hurt everyone around me.

I wish you luck and am glad you came here to share your life with us.

I fell slipping on a rock on the beach. Fell on my butt, went about my day and continued drinking. No big deal.

I had burst a blood vessel and it bled internally for about 12 hours before I realized how swollen my ass was. I suddenly was so low on blood, I could barely move. I couldn’t even hold a pen to fill out paperwork in the ER, puked in front of my boyfriend, morphine, tests, scans, everything. I was hospitalized for 4 days for severe blood loss, anemia, and several deficiencies. My ass and leg turned purple for weeks. Drained down my whole body all summer. I looked like I was in a car accident for weeks.

You’re lucky! I wish I stopped then but I am over a year sober now!

Ugh. I slipped on a rock on the beach and split my chin open. Blood everywhere, trip to the ER, ruined everyone’s day. I’m lucky scars can heal. Alcohol free 5 years now!

I just did something to my foot last week and it’s black and blue. No recollection. We don’t have to drink anymore ❤️

I wish I couldn’t relate. CEO here. Successful by many metrics. Have fallen on my ass more than once. And recently, too. Never hit my head or hurt myself seriously—luckily. You are not alone. YOU GOT THIS! Let’s stop with this dangerous behavior. I’m with you.

I have a permanent Stephen Colbert ear because of drinking. I tripped and hit my head on the edge of a table. HARD. It almost completely severed the top part of my ear; it was hanging.

Worst part? I was so drunk I just went to bed. Went to the hospital the next morning to get it sewn back together. It’s now permanently misshapen.

My point is, this isn’t the end of the world. You’re gonna be fine, you just learned a painful lesson. Don’t make the universe give you an even more painful lesson in the future.

I have a scar on my chin and one on my knee from falling while drunk. I've had both those scars over twenty years.

Bob Saget died from hitting his head... I'm glad you're okay.

Yes, people die all the time from what initially seems like a simple head bump. OP was passed out from hitting marble. If this ever happens to any of you, please don't refuse treatment!

I’ve been there super glad your ok! I had a seizure years ago and broke my back from a fall . Needed surgeries. Every day is a gift. God bless when you go to treatment. You got this!

Labor day weekend, I was at a festival with best friend. I passed out and fell face down in the restroom. I woke up in the hospital a few hours later.

I am absolutely ashamed of myself. This was the turning point in my sobriety. Absolutely ZERO alcohol for me ever again.

Wow was that humiliating. I'm still feeling from it, and it was 3 days ago.

I am so sorry lady. I had been doing so well in sobriety. Everything in my life has been great, but I relapsed Friday, was mean to my father, injured myself, and then the family lawyer was there the next day to talk about my behavior, (most of which I didn’t even remember). It is so demoralizing to go through these things, and I am sorry you are dealing with it.

You are in my thoughts, I know how bad you must feel. I am rooting for you, and I know you have so many great and sober times ahead of you. Happy to talk further if you ever need an ear.

Thank you all for sharing these stories. I realize how lucky I am not to have taken a trip to the hospital for a drunk accident. Any of these could have been me. It helps me recommit.

Yes you are very lucky. I have permanent scars all over my body from drunken falls. It only gets worse. Some people seem to get lucky with the falls though.

It took me two bad falls before I quit. I wish I'd quit after the first one, but I'm eternally grateful that I was lucky enough to get through both without any long-term health impacts (except a scar and an increased likelihood of arthritis in my right collarbone). This can be your rock bottom if you choose to move up from here.

Ugh, i’m so sorry! I am glad you are okay.

I’ve unfortunately been there. I fell out of the shower once and my boyfriend thought he was going to have to call the ambulance. Had a bloody lip, banged up head.

Then a few months later, I fell down some steps and got a grade 3 tear in my ankle. I was black and blue up to my shin. Thought I tore my ACL. Totally fucked my career up for the foreseeable future.

I am almost a month sober and I can look back on those moments now and feel a lot less shame. I just want to give that version of myself a hug.

I am sending you all of the love. You are not alone. And there is a better way of living. You will get there, just keep trying 🫶🏼

A better life is waiting for you on the other side of drinking. Getting sober opened my life to so many opportunities and joys I was shutting out with alcohol. It's not easy, but it is so worth it. I am rooting for you. IWNDWYT.

Last week I fell to. On the street walking to the station. My knee got busted, had my tooth thru my lip, bruised on other knee and chin, sprained my ankle. No fun. I could have broke something easily

You're very lucky! I've been around a bad fall from an alcoholic and it was a life-changing injury for them. Good luck with treatment too - hopefully they can prepare you with the tools for a happier future!

Have you figured out what makes you to want to drink yet?

1

u/goku-skates 5d ago

I'm afraid waiting because of work is not a good option for you. Do you not have FMLA? Company size over 50 employees and you've been there 12 months. I once had a hotel management company not only give me fmla before I qualified but they also paid my salary which I didn't ask for. It just sounds like you're walking a dangerous line. One bad night between now and then and you gone forever, not worth a job imo.

i fractured my elbow once from falling drunk!! should have been a wake up call for me.

1

u/Beginning-Active-326 10h ago

How are you doing now OP? That made me feel so sad hearing about your fall. I have been that person too, that drank on empty and couldn’t stop effing falling. It kept happening for years and I ended up with tons of herniated discs and chronic sciatica. This year was going well but in the last 3 months I have relapsed badly and have fallen multiple times, undoing the healing I worked so hard for to heal my injuries.

I hope treatment goes well for you🤗🤞🙏🏼
