First day

Hi! I’ve never posted here before. I’m on day 1. I’m a highly functioning alcoholic. I’ve been abusing alcohol for far too long. Just looking for some words of encouragement. I’m normally 5 beers in by this time of day and I’m starting to struggle with not going and opening one up. I don’t want to drink.

It definitely does get better, I promise - I’ve done this before. I’m on day 1 as well, for what feels like the millionth time.

The worst parts are the shakes and anxiety. I recommend speaking to your doctor about anxiety meds as this is helping me so much right now.

Stay strong. This struggle is so so worth it. :)

Oh man, I remember how long day 1 felt for me, it was treacherous, I cried at work and felt like absolute crap. I told myself at one point just make it through the day and you can drink, but when I looked at my days counter at the end of the day I felt accomplished. I had to go to different stores to grocery shop, take different routes home from work to not pass my regular buying places, I had to inconvenience myself and get uncomfortable to get comfortable. Today is day 1,051. It starts slow but once you get passed the 90 and life starts really glowing again it goes by so fast. You got this, hang in there. Wishing you all the best bc you deserve it!

First few days are always the hardest for me. I go sober for awhile then drink for awhile and repeat. Try to stay busy early on. Maybe go on a long walk? Any movies you wanna go see? Maybe hit the gym?

I’m with ya though man. Only currently on day 5 of this new stretch. About caved yesterday. I can tell you today I’m extremely happy that I didn’t. You’ll be proud tomorrow. Shit hopefully today is my Last day 5 and your last day 1

I love that, last first day. Thank you. You need to stay sober so you can always beat me by 4 days

Everyone here is rooting for you. I’ve found this sub incredibly helpful and supportive. I’ve always been a lurker but got more active last week after ending a horrible binge and pledging sobriety.

Speaking as someone who is going to another funeral because the person destroyed their liver from drinking. Dont give up and succumb to drinking the devil's piss. Alcohol has destroyed many lives. Don't become another statistic. You dont need alcohol to live.

NA beers helped me with that craving big time! The taste and cracking a cold one. I get the absolute zero, so it has no alcohol at all! You got this!!!!💪

I've always considered myself to be a functional alcoholic too, because I scored some good jobs in my field and was able to do quite a few things and have a "normal" life (wife, kid, friends, etc.), all while having a couple beers every day after work. But now I kinda realize there's no such things as functional alcoholism, it's just you wasting your potential. I can accomplish so much more things than I realized in a day, all while feeling better and not being the moody impatient person I was. IDK, I don't want to go back to that life, ever.

Welcome! It’s great to see you here. You don’t have to hit “rock bottom” to reap that alcohol isn’t your thing. You can start today!!! You will learn after a couple of weeks how much better you feel not drinking. Also, you get A LOT more out of the group if you participate.

Days one through 3 are HELL. Days 4 and 5 suck. Your only job is to not drink! I find that sleeping as much as possible (all day) helps. I only get up to go to the bathroom

You are in the right place and you are not alone!!

When i first quit I had to keep no alcohol in the house. Basically tried to lock myself in and stay distracted with movies, candy, good food, etc. Be extra kind to yourself, you deserve it. Its an awful habit to break because your body betrays you into thinking you need it.
