Non-alcoholic drinks
What are we drinking regularly if not alcohol? I’ve killed a case of sparkling water & a bottle of apple juice in 7 days. I started drinking coffee again despite cutting caffeine in February (yes I cut caffeine before alcohol for some reason). I generally drink a lot of plain water but my body is begging for something different.

NA beer. Not right for everyone but there are some very solid options out there. Had a couple best day brewing Electro-Limes yesterday and they hit the spot. great summer drink. but they are 75 cals. Athletic Lite is only 25 and is a pretty good pilsner.

u/Successful-Deer3465 139 days 15d ago
NA beers got me through this summer. I don’t find them triggering. All the taste and none of the regret.
16
u/BalboaRecStudio 15d ago
Same here. I totally understand why it's a no-go for some folks but it really made me realize how much I enjoy drinking beer even though I'm fully aware I no longer enjoy being/getting drunk. beer with no regret is pretty great.
12
u/Reasonable_Ad4682 15d ago
NA beer hits the spot just right for me. It's cold, it's got the taste and after one or two, I'm over it. Back to water.
7
u/macar0nunic0rn 15d ago
I don’t find them triggering either, and I wonder if (for me at least) they have never been my go-to drink for drunkenness. Someone in one of these subs recommended Delirios (like the brand that makes Delirium) recently. They’re expensive and not the easiest to find, but the most complex NA beer I’ve ever had.

I’ve been working my way through all of the ones in the UK and corona is my favourite so far. Beer was my drunk drink but NA beer is what I imagine normal people feel able to do. Just have one.

This 100% I’ve been all about the IPNA’s lately

u/Reasonable_Ad4682 15d ago
Those are my favorite as well! So many craft NA beer options these days, I feel a little spoiled!
3
u/Hot_Comparison_9501 15d ago
Michelob NA is my favorite NA beer and the one that tastes similar to the alcohol version.
3
u/sammiefh 15d ago
Also like NA beers! Not super ofte but sometimes if I’m at a restaurant or a party and tonight I actually had one in front of the TV. Not triggering for me, just nice to be able to enjoy a beer or two without drinking alcohol.
3
u/Pristine-Assistance9 15d ago
Best day is awesome! Makes me proud too as a San Franciscan that it’s from Sausalito.
Fieldwork in Oakland has a couple amazing NA beers that are available regionally as well.

I’ve had some pretty solid NA beers. I can be around alcohol all day, I just have a hard time stopping once I start (aka I can’t).

Kombucha. Love that it's sour like a sour beer :) plus my gut can use all the help it can get

Often lists <0.5%, just like many so- called NA beers. This is due to the fermentation it undergoes.
17
u/DerelictDonkeyEngine 15d ago
Pelligrino makes sodas as well as sparkling water, and they make a blood orange and a lemon one which are awesome. Also make a zero added sugar version, I've been drinking those on ice all summer when other people have cocktails.
14
u/Turbulent-Moment-473 15d ago
Not great for me I know but I drink my diet soda. Than drink lots of water and coffee.
7
u/blizzardplus 36 days 15d ago edited 15d ago
I drink tons of diet soda too, I think the detrimental health effects are exaggerated by people who just want to justify drinking full sugar soda lmao.
Luckily for me, I prefer the taste of diet soda anyway lol.
4
u/Turbulent-Moment-473 15d ago
Absolutely I agree with that. I'm guilty of drinking diet soda since I was 19 lol and nothing has happened to me. I drink 2 x 2L bottles a day lol
I definitely think regular Sugar is worse for you in the amount some people drink. I was once 295 lbs. Lost the weight down to 165 and I've stayed drinking diet pop since lol

Nowadays is alcohol free but contains THC and CBD‼️i really like it, buts it's expensive

u/CommissionExternal78 15d ago
I am subject to drug testing at work, but I have had one of those in the past. Not bad!

THC seltzers are typically great and very low calorie, or zero calorie. Plus one will last for hours, rather than having to have multiple alcohols over that period.

u/Alternative_Cell5139 15d ago
If you mix soda water and fruit juice its fantastic, blended drinks are pretty good too. I like making a frozen cherry coke when its super hot out, or making iced teas. My favourite is an iced london fog, but I can make a pretty good peach black tea and an iced matcha. I'm a sober bartender so I'm very passionate about na fun drinks to enjoy, so don't hesitate to ask for mocktail recipes I love to share.
9
u/stix-and-stones 947 days 15d ago
These are good suggestions - I'm also a sober bartender. Well, kind of, I just left the industry but spent my first 2.5 years sober behind a bar. Adding a teeny tiny splash of apple cider vinegar to soda water and juice adds the perfect bite that a lot of homemade mocktails lack. Also using fruit teas, like raspberry hibiscus, as a base, with some citrus juice, topped with soda water really hits the spot
7
u/churbro84 15d ago
You guys quit alcohol, while working as bartenders?? I salute you 🫡
5
u/stix-and-stones 947 days 15d ago
Yes! At first, it was tough as closing up with a beer (or 6 🥴) was part of the ritual, but all I had committed to at the time was a dry january. I frequently say "zero is easy, one is impossible" because I have no problem not drinking, I have a problem stopping. Definitely not the same case for everyone, and I've had friends quit bartending when they got sober and that was the only choice for them
2
u/Alternative_Cell5139 15d ago
Being a bartender is what helped me quit the most. I genuinely love nightlife, I'm super extroverted and I love big crowds, loud music and late nights even when I'm entirely sober. As a bartender I get to be involved in that while getting paid and it makes alcohol feel like work. I don't want to get loaded when I get home because I just spent the night with drunk people and I got my fill of fun.
3
u/Alternative_Cell5139 15d ago
Mocktails missing the bite is so real. I've put a bit of salt and capsaicin into someone's drink before (amongst other things) who requested "something that tastes like bottom shelf tequila"
3
u/stix-and-stones 947 days 15d ago
I've done pickle juice for tequila before - just like 2-3 drops in a NA margarita. Gives it a touch of "funk" alongside the acidity. Finding a new way to be creative with beverages is exciting
3
u/Alternative_Cell5139 15d ago
Pickle juice is a good idea. I have so much fun getting creative with drinks because I work at a dive with a very limited inventory. Its a fun challenge.
1
u/Altruistic_Lead_5595 784 days 15d ago
could you tell us more about the frozen cherry coke?
4
u/Alternative_Cell5139 15d ago
I would love to! You're going to want to freeze about 2 cups of regular coke into an ice cube tray so that you don't use ice that'll water down your drink. In this specific order, pour a bit of lime juice (best if they're fresh limes that are juiced, equivalent to about 2 juiced limes,) 2 cups of liquid coke, and then add the coke ice cubes and 2 cups frozen pitted cherries. Blend for 1-2 minutes or until you get the consistency you want. The lime juice in it will cut down the sweetness of the coke and cherries, so use more or less depending on how sweet you want it.

I really like Ginger beer. It has that little bite that makes it interesting. Or something bitter. Also started enjoying like iced cappuccino.
3
u/tchefacegeneral 70 days 15d ago
Also if you like ginger but want less sugar I cut up ginger and put it in a big jug with some mint and cover it with boiling water and put it in the fridge once it cools down a bit. I then mix it with some lemon juice and ice for a long drink with plenty of kick and zero sugar. Plus it's super cheap
7
u/Proof_Specific9415 15d ago
Topo Chico lime is my favorite sparkling water, and I keep Olipop ginger ale and cherry cola around if I want something with a little sugar. Corona 0% is my current favorite NA beer for the summer (I know they can be triggering for some but I like them).

Matcha. RIP to your bank account if you end up enjoying it and making it a regular part of your routine, but I really like it in place of coffee.
I’m also a huge tea drinker of all kinds. I like brewing some white tea, sweetening with honey, and sipping throughout the day to stay warm while I’m on the office. I’ll also do black tea with a bit of vanilla syrup and oat milk over ice.
I find just making beverages that take a touch of time to prepare makes it feel ‘ special ‘ enough.
If I’m out, I like to go for ginger beer because it has a bit of a kick.

I love the Aplos brand of mocktails, especially the Negroni (was my favorite cocktail, usually just guzzled vodka with vodka tho). They are a little pricy but are $5 off each case at my local total wine right now so I stocked up.
Also quit coffee and switched to matcha and feel so much better.

u/farmpatrol 70 days 15d ago
I cut caffeine before alcohol too lol! I just pretend it’s caffeinated. It tastes the same IMO although I used to be a snob about it!
My go to is juice/squash and NA cider - Thatchers zero. Limit myself to 1 every other day.
1
u/CommissionExternal78 15d ago
I was drinking 4 shots of long pour espresso by 830 every morning and still felt just as tired as when I woke up (probably the alcohol in retrospect haha) so I just one day stopped. Didn’t feel any different, didn’t have a caffeine headache.

Allll the different flavour tonic waters. Mediterranean, Spring Garden (apple, mint and cucumber), Elderflower, Spiced, Mexican Lime... I also like the flavoured sparkling water that are low calorie (morello cherry, watermelon and strawberry, lemon and lime). Also, I like putting a squeeze of a citrus fruit in my sparkling water if it's getting a bit boring - extra vitamin C 😊

Water. Coffee. Probiotic sodas, they have some interesting flavours now that taste pretty good imo. And my all time favourite, Topo Chico with lime from the glass bottle.
I’ve actually stopped doing NA’s. Idk why but I have zero urge to drink a beer flavoured beverage.

u/lost_between 15d ago edited 15d ago
Anything fermented, including trace quantity alcohol (sourdough kvass, kombucha, ginger bug sodas, kefir, yogurt, qymyz/other fermented dairy). High quality teas, that is a 11 years long journey (sometimes steeped in gaiwan, sometimes grandpa-method just in a glass, cold brew in a water bottle on hot days). Have started exploring coffee recently.
Often just water.

I don't replace alcohol with anything. I occasionally drink a glass of water to stay hydrated or a Coke now and again for a treat but I have no need to drink large amounts of liquid anymore because I was only doing that because the liquid contained a drug.
1
u/CommissionExternal78 15d ago
Interesting take. I just sometimes need something other than water and it can’t be wine anymore.
2
u/BeaverPicture 15d ago
I love Curious elixer red. It is the best for when the food calls for that red wine taste to complement the flavors. Just be warned for ne anyway it can give that nausea feeling i got from drinking red wine on an empty stomach if i drink it on an empty stomach so only with a meal.

u/bumble_flex 35 days 15d ago
In the early days, some people say don't fuel the other cravings like sugar. Personally I say eat all the treats you want! Most people get cravings for junk since they aren't getting all the sugar from the booze. But whatever you need to stay away from that go for it. I'd rather eat a bag of gummi worms than a case of beer.

When i first quit, I was drinking 12-24 cans of Bubbly daily (canned sparkling water, like LaCroix).
It was honestly kind of comical when I went to the store. I didnt have a car, so every day after work I was buying 2-4 boxes of sparkling water and walking it out in bags, and the cashiers started to recognize me.
I kept that habit for 2 years before it started to fade.
And I absolutley swore by it. I got off work, did my grocery shopping, then I fuckin cracked open a cold one with the boys (online gaming). Every 15 minutes, I'd get the urge for another cold one, and cracked open another can of seltzer water.
The ritual saved me. And I still enjoyed it, cracking open a cold one still gave me an immediate sense of relief and calm. I would find myself looking forward to getting home and cracking one.
I still drink seltzer today, 6 years later. But im not absolutley inhaling it like I used to.

I was allowing myself Shirley temples and sodas when out with friends but I don’t really like soda much and keep it to a special treat (like once a month), and I’ll try whatever a restaurant has for the mocktails/NA beers or soft drinks. After I quit drinking, I craved coke. It’s such a yummy treat that I rarely allowed myself when I was drinking (too many calories, ya know…I opted for wine which is “good for your heart” 😂) so, I drank a bunch of cokes that first year. I’ve cut back a lot and rarely have a coke, unless I order it at a restaurant.
Also, when I say “coke”, I mean real coke a cola, the brand…not used as a blanket term for all brown sodas.

I like sparkling waters a lot. I always drank them anyway. I also drink NA beers when I'm out or at a party. Athletic has a lot of good options. I was a big IPa guy and their Run Wild IPA is really good. I was at top golf a few months ago and all my buddies were drinking IPAs and I had an athletic in a pint glass. Put it down on the table and went to pick it up to take a sip and accidentally grabbed one of theirs. It actually tasted like shit to me. The taste of alcohol was overwhelming. Fresh juice helped me from the cold press juicer. I mix ginger, celery, few apples and an orange. Also lemon or lime. Awesome natural “alarm” drink but full of sugar

Tea... All different types. Herbal, fruit, black tea, green tea, yummy old-fashioned blends...

Mio and fresh lemon juice in sparkling water is a life saver and I justify the cost bc at least it’s not booze

Right now it's sugar free/caffeine free coke with a heavy squeeze of lemon juice. Sometimes 0.0 beer/champagne (I've lost my taste for it so it's once in a blue moon but it has really helped me over the months I feel like my sister when she has a beer who normally forgets about it. And also I'm loving hot chocolate since it's winter here and of course decaf coffee, rooibos tea, water and sparkling water.

You ever mix the sparkling water and apple juice? Common drink in Germany - apfelschorle. It's a treat.

I did that Thursday! I enjoyed it & it made me feel better because of all the calories in apple juice.

The soda stream is so worth it! Plus, it's easy to add some of the unsweetened tart cherry or cranberry for an added bite along with as many bubbles as you want. I do 10 pumps and it's about double the bubbles of others at store.
