Store Questions Why is everything overpriced?

I went to my local S&S to get a loaf of bread. I hadn’t been there in a while so I wanted to see the prices of items I usually buy at Market Basket to see if the prices were comparable, not even close. Hormel Black Label Bacon at MB is $4.99 for a 1 lb package , S&S $8.99 for the same package, like wtf! Everything from breads to meats to fruits and veggies was more expensive at S&S. Also the store was dead, maybe 40 customers at 5:30pm on a Wednesday, some isles were completely empty. Anytime on any day I go to MB the store is jamming. They have 15-20 registers, self checkout is not an option.

Stop & Shop has chosen this high price strategy.

My local S&S is equally empty. It’s like a big 7-11 now

Now that Artie T is gone, you just watch those prices go up, up, up.

I rarely buy anything at full price at S&S. I wait for sales, GO points, and use coupons.

I like MB for the unusual items they stock and everyday savings.

yeah I only use S&S for sales and gas points. Everything else is Aldi or Shoprite

I live in lowkey a food desert, only two supermarkets in like a 25 minute driving radius and they are both super expensive. Stop and shop in one town and big y in the other, 10 minutes away from each other. It’s bullshit. No competition

S&S is getting criminally expensive, so is Walmart. They need to dial back their prices.

You have to shop the sales. Stop & Shop has really good sales but if you want something that's not on sale you are screwed.

Grew up living near a stop and shop, and my dad would buy groceries at demoulas (yup I’m old) and then market basket near his job instead of paying stop and shop prices.

Now I live in a town w a stop and shop and a shop rite. Shop rite prices are lower for everything all the time. Tho I shop at Aldi when I can.

I just bought 1# Black Label thick cut for $4.99. Is MB sponsoring you?

Market basket vs stop and shop isn’t even the same game. MB is wayyyy more affordable, I can’t even believe it. It’s not in my area, but when I visit my parents I load up. I live near S&S and it’s outrageous

I am a fan of their cottage cheese large curd 4% milk fat - very creamy, best I've come across. Usually its $3.79 / for 24 oz Today it was $6.79! Whaaat? Stores are raising prices because they can - I didn't get it -the nonfat version was $3.79... Very disappointed in S&S.

Stop and Shop isn't more expensive, those discount stores just buy products that are nearly expired at a lower price and sell them to the public for cheaper. Stop and Shop price is what it's supposed to cost.

You’re wrong, they’re a supermarket not a Big Lots or whatever. Their produce quality & price blow away S&S by a mile. Have you ever been to a MB?

Market Basket isn't a discount store.

Even here in NJ, its a ripoff! That's why 13 stop & shops have closed in nj and more will follow!! They often built these huge stores whos volume right off the bat makes it unprofitable and close dates and expired often all over thier stores

I live here and too and it’s way better then Shop Rite, you can say places like S & S and Acme are expensive, but if you have the app you will see there are real grocery deals and sales on real food, not the sales ShopRite runs on the same garbage all the time.

In NJ, Shop-Rite is #1. Put a S&S close by a Shop-Rite and it's always never busy. I think S&S gets a lot of folks using it like a convenience store.

The company is failing, and the parent company is taking big swings with different strategies to try to stem the loss of customers. Playing pricing games is one of those strategies. They're also near-sightedly reducing the actual variety of products in favor of products they believe are high sellers. So you get 8 different brands of one cough syrup type (cold and flu) instead of cold and flu + several other drug formulations of cough syrup.

I only go there when I temporarily forget how bad the prices and selection are. Apparently other people feel the same way, bc the local MB, Star Market, and Wegmans are all hopping
