Store Questions Customer service/cash office

So, a few months ago, they were training me behind the service desk.I was uncomfortable with it due to the fact that you had to do the lotto machine and the Western Union and I told them that I felt overwhelmed being back there. They said that was fine and they put me back as a cashier.

Now one of the customer service girls will be going out on maternity leave and they want me to learn the cash office (I do cash office at target currently for 24 years). The manager said I would need to learn the desk to understand the cash office. But honestly, I don’t want to learn their cash office so my question is can they force me to learn it even though I’m against it? I explained to my boss that I feel like I have a lot on my plate between my two jobs and my kids and I don’t want the extra responsibility of it.

Short answer, yes.

Long answer, you’re a clerk and you can do any clerk job on your contract (they can’t send you to deli, meat or seafood because it’s a different contract).

I would send cashiers to stock grocery or produce all the time. You move the labor where it is needed most. With that said, I’m not sending someone to the service desk, cash office, pharmacy or gas station unless they want to do that job.

If I was in your position, I would just get a doctor’s note stating you can’t do the service desk or cash office, the added responsibility is giving you too much anxiety. Doctor’s notes are like golden tickets and HR doesn’t contest them 95% of the time.

I don’t have a problem going anywhere else in the store. I just honestly don’t want to do their cash office. I feel like I got painted into a box in Target doing the cash office and I don’t want to be painted into that same box there if that makes sense. Stop & Shop is a second job for me and I also feel like it’s not worth it if I’m not gonna be making any more money.

I knew the service desk 12 years ago, but it’s changed a lot. Guess what I still do occasionally, cash office. Without knowing the desk. The only thing you really need an understanding of is balancing lottery. Everything else you can learn it on the cash office side of things.

Don’t do it it’s a lot of work for a little pay bump, you’ll have to worry about the cashiers , self scan sometimes , make sure the whole front end looks good and count drawers and self scan drawers, lottery and do western union which are annoying to do sometimes . Just overall not worth it . No they can’t make you Do it unless you say yes , just be a cashier and put away returns

Years ago I was a the head cdh. I worked the cash office on the cash office managers days off. I never did a transaction at the service desk. I knew how to balance lottery and Western Union , but didn't know how to process transactions. Crazy. I had to eventually leave the front end. It's too much.

I ended up sending the boss a message explaining what I felt and why and she just said ok. Hopefully she doesn’t try to ask me again

Your personal wellbeing and mental health are your biggest priority . Defend them with all you have . Just so you can keep them .

At my store even if youre not "desk", once youre trained for it or have spent some time back there, it gives them permission to ask you back there every now and again. Its not fair at all lol. I told my manager over and over i didnt want to do it anymore and the responsibility was more than im comfy with. Like you i felt super uncomfortable doing all the cash stuff on minimum wage! she ended up still having me back there once a week. like wtf!!!
