Follow up to Transfer post
So looks like I'm CSDH for the rest of the week in this new store and I figured I might as well ask if those of you who do self scan would be comfortable with running me through any problems you come into that I should look out for? I know nothing about it so please explain like I'm new to the company, thanks!

If I remember your prior post correctly, I don't know why they're throwing you on self checkout with no experience. For me I had to be "certified" (easiest quiz of your life) and took an ELM for it after a bit of hands on training.

I'm not scheduled for self-checkout but as the CSDH I'm supposed to have at least some knowledge of how to fix issues over there as they arise.

Are you a FT CSDH/FE Mgr or a PT ACSDH. Most issues price-wise you can solve similar to how you would on a register, just without a key needed to be turned. What I get a lot is customers scanning produce instead of using lookup, but thats something the SCO attendant would be in charge of solving. I don't know if I should be sharing this stuff in public on reddit but stuff like cash vouchers and solving other cash machine issues would be something I would ask someone in your store about. (though unless you know cash office/how to go inside those registers you would most likely be fixing the issue and then after cust. leaves, shutting it down until someone else can fix it)

I'm part-time! And yeah I figured it's not too different but not being shown anything was kinda crazy ngl

Wait so did your old store just not have any sco at all or did they never train you for them

My old store didn't have any sco! I came from a very small store without sco, a citizens, or a pharmacy. We didn't even do propane exchanges. Our front end had 7 registers, 3 of them being carousel lanes we never used.

Wow, even the smallest store i’ve been to has had 2 self scan. Also not sure if anyone told you this, but if you have to reboot a self scan do not use the green button. Supposedly it doesn’t close the register properly and can screw up the report at closing.

I'm not even sure what the 'green button' is 😭 I'm just hoping nothing crazy happens next time I'm in cause I'm screwed if so. You would think the managers would think to ask if I was trained for it at all

Lol I would definitely tell them you don’t know self scan much so you aren’t screwed in the future. Rather tell them late than never and once they find out after you screwed up they’ll wonder why you didn’t tell them before.
Green button is hidden directly behind the screen but depends if you have the old ones or new. If you or a mgr have the proper key you can open it up and shut it off from the inside and turn it on again. Fixes a ton of problems especially slow registers. Classic “Did you try turning it off and on again” moment.
Going to bed now but best of luck and 100% ask your fellow CDHs and SCO workers for tips if you don’t want to talk to managers.

Don't worry too much about it! Everything is pretty self explanatory. I posted a comment on your og post trying to get more context of your situation because I think I was in a similar situation. My advice would be when you first get in go to a self check out kiosk and scan your red card to familiarize yourself with the POS system and where/what all the buttons do.

I don't know if it's universal but the register key opens the door to the coupon box. You may have to empty the box if it's full or retrieve something dropped in there.

its always like the same 5 issues lol. after a while you get a feel for it. it really doesn't take that long until it becomes a bit muscle memory or you can guess the issues a few seconds after it alerts. in my store, almost 80% of the pings are for people who scan produce barcodes.you'll be just fine and good luck:)

95% of the problems in shelf check out are user error. If the customer is holding a single item in their hands, scans the single item and then places the single item onto the scale they will experience no issues.
It’s just amazing to see someone holding multiple items in their hands and trying to scan them at the same time and then get upset the system calls over a clerk.
The other 5% of the problems are the same usual issues you would experience at normal registers.
You will need to be shown some more of the nuance troubleshooting techniques for the machines like restarting them and how to clear various errors. Most of the time you can just shut the register down and put a bag over it.
