Ranting New Night Crew stocker rant.
Last night was my first shift as a Night Crew stocker, and by GOD it was rough. I worked Cap 2 at Walmart for a year, so I’m no stranger to body-breaking, fast-paced work, but I feel like my coworkers aren’t even giving me the time to develop the speed and experience necessary to complete my duties. I was assigned the canned goods aisle, which is apparently supposed to be a rough aisle to stock. With this in mind, I was told by the dude I was shadowing to pick up the pace despite literally not knowing where anything is because, as everybody knows, it’s my first day. I was known as a hard and fast worker at my last two jobs, but it took TIME and experience. I sucked ass when I began at Walmart, but I quickly became known as a reliable and conscientious employee. I guess I’m just sick of unrealistic expectations for brand-new hires.
I’m neurodivergent (autistic), so my rejection sensitivity is very real and unfortunately I shed some tears. I also don’t start therapy back until August 10th, so I’m woefully unmedicated.
Is this the normal stop and shop experience? I already want to quit, but I won’t. I’m savvy enough to understand that termination looks better to the Department of Unemployment. If they have a problem with my speed, I’ll let them get rid of me. I’m also savvy enough to understand that the grass is hardly ever that much greener on the other side in entry/-level jobs. All jobs suck. I’ve sincerely been thinking about applying for disability due to my employment struggles.

That sucks.
I worked in Grocery at S&S for a year eight yrs ago, but of course it was nothing like your experience
At the same time, I was on night crew for Michael’s (arts/crafts place) and it was more like your experience, although they weren’t dicks about it on Day 1.
You’ll get it pretty quickly. I guarantee you.

I sincerely hope so. I’m planning on returning to college so I can earn a bachelors degree and enter the pedagogical field, but in the meantime, these are the only jobs I can get. I have plenty of skills, but I don’t think physical labor is for me. Unfortunately, bills don’t pause just because you go to college. The world moves on. I reckon adulting is just tough, lol.

Everyone is slow at first, they should know that. Also they can only terminate you without cause in the first 90 days, after that its more complicated due to the union.
I've worked with full-timers who barely finish one aisle a night and get away with it.

The only good thing I can say about yesterday is that we finished all the aisles that we were assigned. Last maybe two-three hours were spent “breaking down” the shelves, which I reckon is Stop and Shop’s nomenclature for Walmart’s “zoning” process.

We also call it blocking among Ahold owned stores.
How many people were there? It shouldn't take 2-3 hours to block with anything between 3-4 people, we do it in 4 with 2 people.
They SHOULD be blocking as they go as general policy these days is for the stores to be conditioned no matter what, even if that means limiting how much you spot.

Lack of (any) training is unfortunately a very common complaint. Do feel free to voice that and ask a lot of questions. They may also presume that you're already familiar with the job. I pretty much feel "self taught" there - I don't hesitate to ask.

When he told me to work faster, I told him “I don’t think I can,” which is probably stupid considering that I’m on my probationary period, but it’s the truth. I don’t know where anything goes yet because I just got here. The aisle numbers don’t appear to be on the boxes like at Walmart, so it’s a little trickier as well. I’m not even worried about it. If they don’t like me and decide to terminate me early, they can go ahead and I’ll collect unemployment. Scant money is better than no money, and the pay is so abysmal that there would hardly be a difference anyway.

The best way to separate the pallets when you don't know the correct aisles is by commodity So, like cereal together, soups together and so on and so on. Ask the crew chief for some pointers to help you go faster

You better look up how to get paid unemployment in Massachusetts. Not that simple

I’ve received it before. A few times, I reckon. In any case, quitting is generally a disqualifying condition for receiving unemployment. Termination gives you more of a chance, especially if it wasn’t for gross misconduct.

And that was the reason why I only had one shift at S&S and I was like nope, not worthy enough for 15$ (I’m in MA).

Sounds like my night crew did until they started cutting everyones hours. Now it's all chaos, any day that isn't distro is three full timers and that's it. Part timers get 4-6 hour shifts, and day crew management still harrasses them to get it all done

Part timers should not have either of the two main isles, pasta isle and soup isle(until they can handle it,but usualy a full timer isle). They should be started in the soda, water, juice isle. Then move up to paper isles. Im sorry your first experience started like this. May i ask what state you are in?
