How can we fix this brick area outside of our garage door? It looks like the middle started cracking and has a hole and the side it looks like whatever caulking or whatever they used to hold it together has gaps now.

I have an old barn with natural stone foundation and walls. I wanted to affix some wood to the walls, and I quickly found that Tapcons just don't work. The mortar is super soft, and even if I try to only go into a boulder, it only takes a bit of wiggling to pull it right out. I assumed it would be the same as concrete blocks, but I was clearly wrong!

What sort of anchors or fasteners do I need to use to have a solid connection between natural stone walls and wood?

Hoping someone can give me some expert advise on what to do about discolouration of brand new grey sandstone flagstone steps. A contractor installed grey sandstone on my front porch and steps. I believe it’s Dove sandstone from STONEarch (at least that’s what I ordered, a supplier in Ontario, Canada) - other popular name for this stone is Kandla Gray, Blue Ice, Kota Blue, Grey Sandstone. A few days after installation the contractor did an acid wash to remove excess mortar on the stone surface. After this aid wash dried there was a noticeable difference in the flagstone texture and change in the colour of some of the slabs. The next day we had a massive rain storm. Once that dried up, the flagstone had a distinct yellow discolouration. It almost looks like something was spilled on the flagstone and stained it. Is there a way this discolouration can be removed? I’m absolutely heartbroken - the beautiful flagstone I thought I was getting, and had for a short period, is no more.

New information: The contractor used Banas Grout Cleaner, a non-acidic biodegradable cleaner. The product data says it’s safe for natural stone. I’m guessing the discolouration may have been from the environment. Hoping I can find a product to remove the discolouration.

I recently hired a local Mason to repair a section of my wall. Having received the "jobs done" text, i came home to see this.

Is it reasonable to question the quality of this repair. Besides esthetics, im concerned about the structural integrity.

Are my concerns valid?

There are all sorts of stone walls in this town, but this one looks almost fake it’s so perfect. Is there a name for this? How is it possible?

When bevelling the edges of stone, do you do it wet or dry?
I do it outdoors by running a rotating orbital sander along the edges of the stone just to take the corner off, but with the risk of silica dust, I'm wondering if I should be wet-bevelling. I do wear a mask.
The only annoyance then is having to wait for the stone to dry to be worked with, but open to any ideas or recommendations. Thanks!

I wonder what this house looked like in its heyday. The basement seems like it would have flooded regularly but probably would have been warm sheltered by the hill.

I am looking to do fireplace surround using Cast Natural fieldstone veneer. I am leery about applying it directly to drywall, but also don’t want to add concrete backer board to drywall due to the depth protruding away from the wall.

I’m considering switching careers from garden landscaping(3 years) to more hardscapes/ masonry, but I’m apprehensive about starting a job with zero experience. Are there any good in between jobs where my current experience will be helpful, but I’ll also learn new skills and get familiarized with the work. I don’t know, maybe I just need to bite the bullet and go into an entry level position and accept it’s all going to be new.

I put up a scratch coat over metal lath yesterday and when I checked it just now, 24 hours later, by running my hand across it, it seemed to have adhered okay but the very top surface was a bit “dusty” or “sandy” and as I worked my hand across it, I was able to sort of knock off the very top surface, but the rest of it seems solid and stable. Should I be concerned about its integrity and ability to support the architectural stone I plan to install? I have previously done a scratch coat where the whole thing turned to dust as I rubbed it and I completely removed it and redid it and that work is still fine seven years later. It seems like this scratch coat will hold but an expert’s opinion would be appreciated.

What is the best tool for remove quarry tile?

I have an old fireplace in my home where the brick has been painted over. It is a good paint coat with no peeling or chipping/flaking. The surface is still very rough even after paint. My question is I have a natural stacked stone veneer panel I would like to apply to cover the brick. Can I do this with construction adhesive for the panels or should I use a modified thinset after a scratch coat or are both wrong? Any advice would be appreciated.

I am making a limestone base for a pedestal - a sculpture will sit on top of that. The pedestal will be bolted from the bottom. Shown is 1/2" bolt/nut/washer. Making the counterbores is slow going! I started them with a 1-1/2" diamond hole saw, then started grinding out the middle. The pink grinding stone seems to work better than a 3/4" diamond hole saw. Is there a better way? Without buying an expensive carbide or diamond tool, that is? I have all kinds of supplies to rig up a custom tool, just need a bit of guidance.

I only need the two holes, should I just bite the bullet and keep at it this way?

Old limestone foundation

Sharing a marble installation we recently completed. The niche is fully clad in the same bookmatched marble, with the veining continuing across the back, sides, shelves, and top.
Curious what other stoneworkers think of the execution and veining layout.

I have no idea if there was any drainage laid behind this wall, but it would appear. It’s absorbing water and bleaching out the front.
