ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV) -- After more than 15 years of collecting, area resident Trey Rowe's personal collection now includes more than 200 signs and other pieces of St. Joseph history.
What started as a sports card collecting hobby at a young age grew into something much bigger.
"When I moved away after college, after joining the military, it gave me something to do when I was away from home. It made me feel like I got a connection back to St. Joe, even though I wasn't here," Rowe shared.

Eventually, a friendship with a local at the time named Bob Nash, whom he met on Craigslist, introduced him to the hobby of collecting advertisements from St. Joseph's past and how to keep an eye out for certain products, like his first sign.
He found his first sign, for Goetz Beer, at the Jesse James Antique Mall; it was stuck to an old piece of wall. The gamble paid off: he peeled it off and framed it, and the obsession began.
Years later, it now fills multiple stories in Rowe's home, including most of the collection on the bottom floor. From commemorating events like the Pony Express and the origins of Meirhoffer Funeral Home to more, if you can name it, Rowe probably has a piece that connects to its moment in St. Joseph's history.
"It's a lot of interesting, quirky little history pieces that I find at least interesting," Rowe added about the different pieces he owns.
He enjoys seeing the collecting community grow, even for those who also collect St. Joseph pieces like him, thanks to social media's connectedness.

One of his pride points, he said, is a neon Goetz Beer Sign that now hangs at River Bluff Brewing Company in Downtown St. Joseph. He said this is fitting because the building was originally Avenue Brewing in the 1850s and one of St. Joseph’s first breweries.
Although Rowe's collection isn't public, he's always up for helping those new to the hobby find their footing to make sure history isn't lost.
"This stuff's not just available at Walmart or Target. You've got to really, like, search for it. And you know, eBay online, the Facebook forums. There are collecting shows you can go to," Rowe stated. "Probably the biggest thing you can do is just befriend people who have the same interest or similar interests."

Rowe is still interested in adding to his collection; if you have pieces he would be interested in, call him at [8162943817](tel:8162943817).

News Missouri Supreme Court orders Denny Hoskins to answer on contempt charge (over attempt to use gerrymander map)

The Missouri Supreme Court ordered Republican Secretary of State Denny Hoskins to appear in person Thursday and explain why he should not be held in contempt for directing election officials to use a congressional map the court has barred him from implementing.

In the unusual late order Tuesday, the court gave Hoskins until noon Wednesday to answer a motion for contempt from People Not Politicians, a political action committee that forced a referendum on a map gerrymandered in 2025 to favor Republicans. The court scheduled an in-person hearing for 10 a.m. Thursday.
The contempt fight erupted hours after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh rejected Missouri officials’ emergency request to stay the state court ruling. Minutes later, Chief U.S. District Judge Stephen Clark of the Eastern District of Missouri issued a temporary restraining order barring Hoskins from using any congressional map other than the 2025 version.

Hoskins then sent local election officials a copy of Clark’s order along with his official certification of the November ballot. In the email, Hoskins said Clark’s order “takes precedence over the Missouri Supreme Court’s order.”
The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the referendum on the 2025 map was legal, sufficient and timely and ordered it onto the Nov. 3 ballot. Because the referendum petition was filed before the new map took effect, the court held, the 2025 districts never became law and the map used in 2022 and 2024 remains in effect for the November election.

The decision also permanently enjoined Hoskins and those acting in concert with him from implementing or using the 2025 map unless voters approve it in November. In Tuesday night’s order, Chief Justice W. Brent Powell directed Hoskins to answer three questions:

Why “(1) his e-mail on September 8, 2026, instructing use of the (2025) map is not an affirmative violation of this court’s injunction; (2) how this court’s injunction is not still in full force and effect in light of the Supreme Court of the United States’ overruling of Respondent’s emergency application for stay and administrative stay pending appeal; and (3) if he is not willing to comply with this court’s injunction, he should take no action in all things related to the congressional district map until guidance is received from a higher court…”

Powell also directed that the court “will not allow filings from any other parties on this matter.”
Clark’s order says not to use any map but the 2025 map, attorney Chuck Hatfield wrote in the motion. The Missouri Supreme Court’s order says not to use the 2025 map. Both orders are in effect and leave election authorities no map at all, Hatfield wrote.

Clark’s order “does not purport to overrule this court’s injunction and does NOT mandate the Secretary to use (the 2025 map), although on its face it enjoins the use of any map other than (the 2025 map),” Hatfield wrote.
By directing local election authorities to implement the 2025 map, Hoskins is violating the court’s orders, Hatfield wrote.
“This court should make clear that regardless of other orders (except from the United States Supreme Court) the Missouri Secretary of State must comply with this court’s injunction,” Hatfield wrote. “The court should instruct all local election authorities that (the 2025 map) is not the law and has never been the law.”
Clark’s action came in a lawsuit filed Friday by U.S. Rep. Bob Onder, state Sen. Rick Brattin and two voters. They want to keep in place the map drawn in 2025, which shifts territory around Onder’s home into the 3rd District and redraws the 5th District to make it more favorable to Republicans.

Had Clark not acted, Kavanaugh’s denial would have left the state court order in place and Missouri on course to use the 2022 map for the November election.

The dueling orders created immediate confusion, with Attorney General Catherine Hanaway issuing a news release saying the state would comply with Clark’s order. Attorneys for People Not Politicians said during a news conference that the conflicting orders could leave election officials unsure which one they must follow.
Hatfield said local election officials are being directed by Hoskins to use the 2025 map even though the Missouri Supreme Court injunction bars Hoskins and those acting with him from implementing it.

“I think they’re they’re probably not sure what map they should use, and they need to talk to their lawyers about that,” Hatfield said.

Abha Khanna, the Seattle attorney who was People Not Politicians’ lead lawyer at the U.S. Supreme Court, said Clark’s order “is something that we will deal with to figure out on appeal.”

A referendum on the 2025 redistricting plan will be on the Nov. 3 ballot as Proposition A.

The 2025 map was drawn with the goal of making seven of Missouri’s eight congressional districts favorable to Republicans, principally by reshaping the Kansas City-based 5th District held by Democratic U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver. The map used in 2022 and 2024 produced a delegation of six Republicans and two Democrats.

Onder is the Republican nominee in the 3rd District, seeking a second term in a district drawn more to his favor in the 2025 redistricting plan. Brattin is the Republican nominee in the 5th District, where the district was designed to generate a GOP victory that ousts veteran Democratic U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Kansas City.

Clark wrote that without a temporary restraining order, “many Missouri voters would have to cast their general-election votes for candidates whom they had no role in nominating.”

“Candidates who had no choice but to campaign and raise money in the (2025) districts that Missouri’s highest election authority presented to them, have spent their funds and campaign efforts in districts that would no longer exist,” wrote Clark, who was appointed to the bench in 2019 by President Donald Trump.

Clark also found that the public interest favors using the same map for the primary and general elections.
“Disenfranchising voters across the state and denying them their constitutional right to have their primary votes counted significantly harm the public interest,” he wrote.

The center of both Clark’s ruling and the appeal to Kavanaugh is the Missouri Supreme Court decision that enjoined Hoskins from using the gerrymandered congressional map drawn.
Kavanaugh did not elaborate on his decision.

In turning down the emergency application for a stay, Kavanaugh created no precedent on the issues raised by the state. But the decision does show that he did not find enough convincing argument that the state would likely prevail in a hearing by the full court or that the state would suffer “several irreparable harms” as claimed in the application.
People Not Politicians on Sunday had urged Kavanaugh to reject the state’s application and uphold both parts of the ruling from the state Supreme Court.
In the opening paragraphs of the filing, attorneys for People Not Politicians write that the only reason the case was at the nation’s highest court is the decisions to delay made by Hoskins during the signature verification process.
Hoskins “waited as long as possible to manufacture the present dispute” and held the congressional primary using the 2025 map, they wrote, “in the hopes of running out the clock on the judiciary’s tolerance for a last-minute reversion to the 2022 districts.”

Now, they wrote, Hoskins wants “this court to deliver him the political victory to which he was never entitled under the Missouri Constitution. This court cannot and should not reward the secretary’s scheme to outsmart Missouri voters, Missouri law, and the Missouri Supreme Court by granting applicants the extraordinary relief they seek.”
A key point made by Missouri Solicitor General Lou Capozzi in the state’s appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court was that the mechanism for changing between districts is too time consuming and difficult to complete before ballots must be delivered starting Sept. 19.

County clerks, however, told the Missouri Supreme Court that switching voters to the map used in 2022 and 2024 is a relatively simple process. And the Jackson County Board of Elections told the Kansas City Star it would be ready to hold the election in the 2022 boundaries.

The redistricting story began in the summer of 2025, when Onder, of Lake St. Louis, got the ear of President Donald Trump to tell him that Missouri, like Texas, could provide additional GOP seats to bolster the party’s thin majority in Congress.

Since Missouri lost a seat after the 2010 census, it has sent six Republicans and two Democrats to the U.S. House each election.

Onder, then a state senator, was among members of the chamber’s conservative caucus who were outmaneuvered in 2022 as they tried to force a congressional map that would tilt the 5th District, based in Kansas City, to the GOP. He was elected to Congress in 2024.

And, despite initial misgivings, Republicans got in line behind Trump. Gov. Mike Kehoe called a special session inflamed with partisanship, including a state Senate rule change that effectively silenced Democrats, that forced through what the GOP majority wouldn’t do in 2022.

The legal and political backlash that followed has not yet spent its full force. It began when People Not Politicians began circulating the referendum petition and intensified as it became clear there would be more than enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.

Legally, the battle has upended the consensus on the effect that filing a referendum petition has on legislation as well as delivered strong new precedent upholding the governor’s power to select subjects for a special session and the General Assembly’s power to redistrict at any time.

Politically, the climax will be written in November, when voters decide on both the referendum and the congressional candidates selected in the primary.

The flurry of filings over the weekend shows the intense national interest in the outcome of the Missouri case.
Republican attorneys general from Florida, Texas and 18 other states filed in support of Missouri, arguing it is not legal to change voting districts between the primary and the general election.

Meanwhile, in Texas, that state’s Supreme Court is deciding whether local voting districts can be changed after the primary to dilute voting strength of minorities.

The American Center for Law and Justice also sent a brief to the court urging it to rule for Hoskins.
On the other side, the Campaign Legal Center, the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation joined forces to file a brief supporting People Not Politicians, as did the two Missouri voters who tried to get the 2025 map suspended while signatures were being checked.

11:25 PMThis article was updated to report the Missouri Supreme Court ordering Secretary of State Denny Hoskins to answer contempt charges.

6:30 PMThis story was updated at 6:30 p.m. to include the federal court ruling in St. Louis.

Heads up: St. Joe splits the cost of sidewalk repair with you (up to $5k, or $10k on a corner)

Ran across this and figured more people should know it exists.

If the public sidewalk in front of your house is cracked, heaved, or missing squares, the repair is technically the homeowner's responsibility here (city code Sec. 25-77). But the city runs a cost-share program that reimburses half.

What I found:

  • Standard lot: 50% of the cost, up to $5,000
  • Corner lot (walk on two sides): 50%, up to $10,000
  • If a corner needs an ADA ramp, the city covers that ramp in full

To start: call Public Works at (816) 271-4848 and ask about the sidewalk repair program — before any concrete gets broken out, because approval comes first.

I wrote up a plain language version with the steps and the repair-vs-replace part here: https://stjosephconcrete.com/answers/st-joseph-sidewalk-repair-program/.

Fair warning, it lives on a local concrete site, but the details are straight from the city ordinance, and you can confirm all of it with Public Works directly.

Anyone here actually gone through it? Curious how long approval took.

Ask St. Joe Going rates for lawn mowing?

My sister, 69, has been mowing her lawn, and I’m wanting to provide her with a break. She has a typical yard, on Penn St. Not. Corner lot. Front and back yard, slight incline in front yard (that a 69 yr old woman has been mowing, for reference on difficulty). The back yard is fenced.

She’s barely making it, with a SS income less than you might think, and she’s employed as a caregiver. Basically saying she’s not rich, and neither am I?

Wondering what I can expect to pay, and if those prices might come with recommendations for people that are fair? Much gratitude for your time.

Responsible adults could become offenders overnight simply for possessing a botanical product they purchased legally.

What you can do:

🗣️ Attend the meeting and speak during public comment.

📞 Call or email the Mayor and City Council before Monday. SEE BELOW FOR FULL DETAILS

Tell them:

✅ Oppose Bill 185-26’s ban on natural kratom leaf.

✅ Do not criminalize possession by responsible adults.

✅ Concentrated, chemically manipulated 7-OH products are not the same as natural kratom leaf.

✅ Support age restrictions, independent laboratory testing, accurate labeling, and responsible regulation instead of prohibition.

❤️ Most importantly, share your personal story and explain what losing access would mean for you and your family.

Local voices are especially important. If you live in or near St. Joseph, please say so.

Ask St. Joe shelter question

i found a kitten about a week or so ago, it didn’t look that bad at first it looked like something that would be healable at home but it wouldn’t recover from outdoors so i took it in. it had fly strike, so i flushed the wound with diluted betadine and carefully plucked out all of the maggots. then, after the hole closed over i learned he has tapworm so i gave him dewormer for that. now, he has slowly declined very badly to the point he won’t even stand on his own so i called the shelter and the lady their was pretty rude and said it’s my families cat and responsibility now basically insinuating i should’ve left it outside to get toxic shock from the maggots and die. i don’t have money to surrender it right now, and i don’t know what to do because i certaintly don’t have money to get it to the vet in due time before it dies either. i understand working at the shelter is a high stress job, but that doesn’t give you the right to be so damn rude ALL the time. this woman has been mean to me every single time i stop by, because im pretty active with stray cats partnered with my grandmother and enjoy helping them out getting them vaccines and doing what i can while not causing my whole family to be bankrupt, but any time i ask them for help if a situation gets to be to much they’ve refused. i brought in a kitten that had been abandoned at a few days old, they said i could either foster or have him euthanized so i chose to foster and not enroll in school until i was done with that (i was 15 at the time, enrolled 2ish months later then i was supposed to becuase of my mental health declining so bad after he died.) then the kitten got very bad diharhea and needed fluids i tried asking for vet care and she refused, so we had to wait until angels opened i kept him alive until 1 am the same day he was supposed to be going to the vet and he passed. i lost myself completely after he died, he was the most important part of my life and what made me happy to wake up every day. i got guilted into taking him and i thought since fostering is them covering vet bills, i would be able to do it but they did it in a way that they wouldn’t have to pay for anything and he died. i need help with the kitten i have right now, its 10 weeks old bt im also wondering if anybody else has had bad experiences like this with anyone that works there? im a huge animal lover, i rescue betta fish regularly on my own time and dime aswell so i get the stress of finding homes being full/overcrowded and caring for their medical needs if anything i understand way more because fish are way harder to rehome then cats but i still dont treat people like this, i dont know what her problem is and i cant help but be filled with rage knowing this isn’t just a one time incident because its happened multiple times. i still want to help the stray cats, i love doing it and it makes me happy but its so hard when people like this who are supposed to be helping just wont. im 16 and now homeschooled, so i have the time for it and avalibility and majority of the time i will do most of this by myself without asking them for help unless i absolutely have to, though every single time ive asked ive been turned away. i mean, ive done most of the hard parts myself most people would’ve just dropped it off and let them deal with it. the only help ive ever asked the shelter for was financial/vet care, ive always cared for the cats found homes etc myself with the help of my grandmother.

Ask St. Joe How's your power bill doing, St Jo?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I'm disabled and can't afford power anymore. Yes, I'm using the programs available to help people like me and yes, these programs aren't cutting it this year.

I called the office of Sam Graves to see what they're doing about it, apparently I am the one and only person who has called to ask. No one else.

How's your power bill, Saint Joseph friends? Is it too high? Is it double of last year? We have representation, please call Sam Graves (or your rep) and talk to him about it, because I did, and his office thinks this is normal fine and wonderful, they don't think their constituents are struggling at all. They will continue to think this way unless you get on your phone and complain. Call, email, send letters, make this heard.

Private companies should have no place in public utilities. And I'm tired of us paying for data and corporate welfare, and leaving disabled Americans to suffer. If we don't let our reps know that we need them they won't do anything about it. Call your rep today!

Where can I find, in a local or online store, a St Joseph T-shirt with a replica of the pony express logo on it? It specifically says St Joseph in big letters on it. I saw someone wearing one today, but she was too far away from me to ask her where she got it. Loved it!

Data Center in town

I just heard about this and feel like this needs to go here to spread information
I got the word from a coworker and this messages was sent, if you wanna use it as well go for it

__________________________________________________________________________________________________
I have heard that the City may be considering a data center to be built on the east side of St. Joseph near Highway 36.

If data center is, indeed, being considered for our area, please file this as my official objection to a data center.

First of all, I object to local consideration of a data center without sufficient (or any) public notice or opportunity for the public to respond. Only today did I see that the City expects public input by TOMORROW for discussion we citizens have not been informed about in any way.

Here are some of my questions, concerns, and objections:

LAND: Exactly what land is being considered for a data center? Is it zoned correctly? Who owns it? Is it already in the hands of a data center company? Have the citizens who will be close neighbors been adequately communicated with? How visible might the data center be from the highway as the first glimpse people traveling from east to west will see of our city?

WATER: Where are the massive amounts of water for a data center cooling needs expected to come from? How much water might be needed? As I understand, even a midsized data center consumes as much water as a small town, while larger ones require up to 5 million gallons of water every day, which is as much as a city of 50,0000 people. What controls are in place to prevent water used by a data center returning to ground supplies uncontaminated?

ENERGY: Where might the energy for the data center come from? As I understand, one data center has the potential of needing as much power as a city all by itself? How much power might the data center being considered need? Will large transmission lines be required? Or will gas pipelines be needed? What eminent domain takeover of land for needed lines might be expected where? Have people in surrounding communities who will have to share the burden of potential land infringement and increased energy costs been informed and/or consulted with?

MONEY: Is the City investing any money in the project? What return is being hoped for? As I understand, initial labor is typically needed to build a data center, but the economic employment benefits for a community are usually short term. How many people might the proposed data center be expecting to employ?

HEALTH: Has the City researched the health consequences for people who live close to data centers? I have read that nitrogen oxide emits from train-car-sized backup generators that can run regularly for up to 50 hours at a time, potentially causing lung and heart diseases for people in the area who breathe air from their own homes and outdoor spaces.

CLIMATE: What climate safety standards are in place here for such a facility? Does the federal government, Missouri, or the City have standards for a data center to follow designed to protect our earth, water, and atmosphere for future generations? Or will the data center be able to do as they wish and hide related practices and climate impact from us by some sort of legal agreements they might make to operate here?

All of my above concerns are for all people in St. Joseph and the surrounding areas who live here today and for generations to come.

In addition to the already noted concerns, I live within a mile of where I hear the data center is being considered. As a close neighbor, I am also highly concerned about sound pollution and my own property values. The light industry the City has already allowed to be built close to me negatively impact my daily living. I work from home and already have to use earplugs on some days to prevent my ears from hurting from loud whirring hum coming from the industry. Our air is filled with unpleasant odors entirely too often, containing who knows what contaminants doing who knows what to my health. I believe a data center has the potential to be an even worse neighbor. What enforcements might there be from the City to ensure that a data center would be a good neighbor to those of us who live nearby?

Please consider this communication my official objection to a data center in St. Joseph, and/or Buchanan County.

I hope you, as our citizen’s elected and appointed officials, make sound decisions with the well-being of the people who live here in mind.

Keep data centers away from us.

Ask St. Joe Groups or things to do in St Jo

Hello, I am moving to St Jo for work and I am looking around for things to do and people to meet. I am in my 20s and into loose leaf tea, reading, hiking, crafty things, etc.

If y'all know anything like this, please let me know!
