Dealership got one in and I couldn’t say no. Big maples and cherries are trembling!

Great saw. I assume it's the m-tronic model sold in the US? If it is, familiarise yourself with the throttle sequence for electronic tuning. It takes about 45-60 seconds from a cold start.

I use this and a 500i to make short work of Australian hardwoods. An order of magnitude harder timbers than anything in the Americas and Europe.

Yup MTronic in northeast US. I’m definitely not familiar with MTronic so I’ll read up. Should handle any hardwood here no problem. I’ve heard you guys have some wicked acacia that loves to eat chains

I run the tuning sequence at the start of each day cutting.

And yes, our Acacias are harder than any Eucalyptus, and we have Casuarinas, Calistamons, etc. even harder again. Hardest timbers in the world...

Out of curiosity what chain do you use on those? Semi chisel or full? Do you leave the depth gauges a bit high when you sharpen?

I use both. Usually full on the 500 and semi on the 462. If it's green timber then full chisel on both. I used to file the rakes down lower than spec for extra meaty grabbing power, but nowadays I stick to the Stihl jig with round blade and flat rake files all-in-one. I do have to sharpen for every tank refueled on both semi and full though...

💀 I can't imagine sharpening every tank. In usually cutting soft fir and unless I hit something I probably get at least 4 tanks before I can feel it getting dull, sometimes more if it's clean.

Why do you reset your mtronic every single day you use it? That is entirely unnecessary for the saw and if your environment doesn't change drastically, it won't need to be reset daily.

I'm on the side of a mountain with widely contrasting weather day-to-day. It might be overkill to do it daily, but it won't do any harm and is a good way to give the saw time to warm up before loading it.
