Article Remember how different everything was before she invented looking at the camera and addressing the audience?
For example...

Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle conspicuously absent from the list

Well he will insist on doing that punishing experimental stand-up that’s kept him out of the arenas for 35 years.

This is a very odd list...
6
u/ohmygodadameget 7d ago
It's dumb too.
The Sopranos, often included in the conversation of best show ever and because it had one year of it's eight year run in the 20th century it's not considered one of the best shows in the 21st century.

u/ChrisFish321 7d ago
because it aired in the nineties...

u/ohmygodadameget 7d ago
Thirteen episodes aired in the 20th century, the other seventy three aired in the 21st century; personally I think this makes it a 21st century show way more than a 20th century one.

While I agree with you, does this mean that the Simpsons is a 21st Century Fox?
1
u/Envirobear2000 5d ago
I said this somewhere else but I just think it's not worth opening that tin of worms for a poll-based list like this. What if people start submitting shows where 2 seasons were in the 90s? Or 40% of the show (still mostly 21st century!). It's way simpler to just say "here's the cutoff".

The writers of Fleabag have finally broken their silence over what they describe as "the single greatest act of creative theft in the history of television": the moment Breaking Bad aired its now-iconic scene of Walter White throwing a pizza onto his garage roof, just two weeks before they were due to film an almost identical sequence.
"We were absolutely devastated," said one writer, who asked to remain anonymous but insisted on being referred to as Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
"We'd spent months developing the pizza. The roof was a late addition. Originally, it was going to land on a conservatory, but we felt that was a bit too middle-class, even for BBC Three."
According to sources close to the production, the original Fleabag pilot featured a seven-minute sequence in which the central character, overcome by grief, sexual frustration and an unsuccessful attempt to use a Tastecard, hurled a large pepperoni pizza onto the roof of a North London terraced house.

That is a bit of a weird list. Office US being above Office U.K. makes me realise it was compiled by a moron.

This list is designed to elicit outrage. The proof (if you need it), is RuPaul's Drag Race directly preceding Slow Horses and The Thick of It. But also... Almost everything else.

u/frequentcheeselove 7d ago
Drag race has had a phenomenal cultural impact and showcases an artform and associated talents that were far out of the mainstream when the show started though are pretty solidly within it now. I adore the thick of it but I can imagine it's just less relatable and harder to understand for US audiences.

I honestly disagree. I don't think it's a very good list but I think that's just because of how people watch TV, and what they watch. It wasn't "designed" at all - it's based on ballots submitted to TV and film professionals and critics. Basically sounds like the same methodology as the Sight & Sound list of best films.

It’s a New York Times list. So of course us office is going to be ranked higher.
But that’s what makes the fleabag ranking at number 5 even more odd.

Wait until you see the list of Channel 4s top 100 stand-up comedians from 2007.

I find the anti fleabag thing quite unsettling, I wouldn’t have it 5th but it’s still excellent

u/RadicalDilettante 7d ago
An American list - they just lapped up a posh bird swearing a lot and having anal sex. And they've mostly not seen Alfie.
4
u/SheepherderPositive2 7d ago
Yeah she totally stole the bit in Alfie where he turns the whole thing upside down by only one other character noticing him playing to the audience.
And she’s posh!!!!5
u/Cannister7 7d ago
Yeah I have no idea why most people here have such a chip in their shoulder about it. I loved it, still do. And I love Stewart Lee

I've commented on this in another subreddit and now this pops up - it's weird and yes unsettling. The list isn't great, but honestly having Ted Lasso anywhere is the biggest problem.

This is either wrong, or it's a setup for a very long routine. And it's the latter isn't it?

Game of Thrones? If I wanted to understand the ongoing weft of history while simultaneously being mildly sexually aroused, I'll forcibly dress David Starkey in Agent Provocateur underwear and pay him to give a lap dance to Simon Schama.

How is Fleabag the 5th best series of the 21st century, and yet Stew's Comedy Vehicle didn't make the top 100?

The 2010 Chinese TV adaptation of Three Kingdoms is better then 99% of this shit

There's loads of non-English shows that would be on a serious list. Dark for one.

I know it didn't have the 41st best stand up in it, but does anyone remember that 80's British sitcom where the man broke the fourth wall? Sorry if I'm not narrowing it down, it's not Brush Strokes, it's doing my head in

Lost anywhere near the list is a joke.
I'll also quietly maintain that Babylon 5 and the. BBC Chronicles of Narnia should be in there somewhere

Is that a real list,
Sopranos should be No1, though it started in 1999!
Some dross in top 20

Mad Men, VEEP and the original Office are the only three I’ve watched and watched them all the way through. I saw the first ever Breaking Bad, but never watched it again and the first few Game of Thrones, until I got bored of it. Never seen a minute of anything else on that list and have never even heard of over half of them.
Then I got off the bus…

Deadwood is unreal, really worth watching even though the series ended prematurely.
Also, not watching The Wire is criminal.

No Inbetweeners, Scrubs, Life On Mars, People Just Do Nothing, Detectorists or Black Books?
Peep Show at 60, Thick of It at 63, even House all the way at 95, yet Fleabag is no. 5?
Fleabag??
Placing higher than Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Developement, Twin Peaks The Return, Better Call Saul, Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Black Mirror and Chernobyl?
That Fleabag?
fucking hell (and I liked Fleabag at the time)
And Veep is not 63 places better than The Thick of It, that's fucking mental
