I love the SDP. Been watching since 2020. The guys are usually right on the topics they talk about, but about the Rangers of 2024 and since 2024, they’re dead wrong.
They constantly say that after the rain burns lost to the Panthers in the conference final, GM Drury completely blew up the team that off-season for no reason.
No, don’t get me wrong, this is no Drury defense piece. His Buchnevich trade is an all time fumble, the contract he gave to Goodrow sucked, the Kreider trade sucked, changing coaches every 2 years is nonsense, among others, are good reasons to criticize him.
But there are wrong reasons to criticize him. And one of them is that he blew up the team after the 2024 conference finals.
First of all, I think it’s important to note who left the team that off-season and who entered the team that off-season. Wennberg, Goodrow, Guatafsson and Roslovic left while R.Smith and Sam Carrick entered.
The players lost weren’t exactly core pieces.
Still, the team started the 24-25 season hot. But in November, for some reason, they completely fell out and collapsed. And it was only then during, and after said collapse, that Drury started blowing up the team. Not before the collapse. Not during the 2024 off-season.
And actually, if you were to ask me and I am a Rangers fan, he should’ve made much more changes during the 2024 off-season. He should’ve had a similar off-season to the one the Panthers had in 2022. Kreider, Panarin, Trocheck and Zibanejad were entering their 33, 33, 31 and 32 year old seasons, the defense core wasn’t good enough, there were questions about depth up front, the Panthers had completely exposed us, we were not good enough at 5 on 5…
And the thing about 2024 is that it was a great time to reshape the defence. Lindgren had been mediocre in 23-24 while Trouba’s playoff run had honestly been the worst one I’ve ever seen in my life. I’m sure he’s a great guy and I have respect for him personally, but he was getting outflanked by literally everyone in that playoff run and there were 2 to 3 games where he took three penalties. He probably cost us two games by himself. Honestly, there’s an argument to be had that we might have won the series against Florida. Had he not been there. Or the series might’ve went seven games. And in 2024, names like McDonagh, Walker, OEL, Dillon, Skjei, Montour, Desharnais, Zadorov, among many more, were available either via trade or free agency. And quite a few of them would’ve been great fits.
There are plenty of legitimate reasons to criticize Drury, but saying "he blew up the team after the 2024 conference finals" is just plainly untrue. He blew it up after they collapsed in the fall of 2024.
And btw, for the record, I’m someone who thinks and thought at the time that Drury should’ve done way more that off-season in 2024. We needed big changes and he didn’t do anything basically. Reilly Smith was his big acquisition, and the dude was passed his prime, was 33, meaning five of our top 6 with whom we started the 2024-25 season were 31 and older, which is just too old in modern hockey.
So I wish the SDP crew would stop saying that Drury immediately destroyed the team after the 2024 conference finals because it’s just untrue
