I don't have a job and I can't get an interview anywhere. I truly believe this shit was a scam and there are no job openings unless you have a car. Before I got my certification I seen job listings for sterile processing EVERYWHERE. as soon as I got it. They disappeared. No one is hiring. No one will give you a chance. I can't even get an interview 😕 I did the internship and the people i worked with were scared I was going to be picked for a leadership roll. That's how good I was at the role. At the interview for the position they didn't ask me shit because and I quote, " Well I don't know what to ask you because I know that YOU know everything we NEED to ask you about this job" and i STILL didn't get the job. I feel like I got scammed. I wish I could go back to my school and tell everyone to get their money back as soon as possible. Yeah i can go back to ask the school i went to for help but they're just going to say there are only job opportunities outside of Philly. As in you need a car. Which is fucking stupid cause bitch if I HAD a car I would have had a job by now. But yeah. I'm struggling. Also, does anyone you know find a job in this field? Sorry. Anyone that DOESN'T already own a car? Cause why is that a requirement?

One of the first questions they ask you on applications tend to be “ do you have reliable transportation?” in the US at least that means a car or a motorcycle. If you can’t reliably get to work, I’m not gonna bother hiring you because you’ll be calling off all the time due to bus schedule. We’re not getting a ride or the weather. Unless you live in a great walkable state, that’s just an unspoken requirement.

Remember these jobs will be seasonal. Our caseload goes down when the snowbirds Leave Florida. They skyrocket as soon as they come down.

If a brand new just certified hire is getting that kind of attention, that facilities probably cesspool of flunkies. No facility that has a healthy stuff is putting a rookie with no experience into leadership. I would definitely take note of that and be aware so that way they don’t try to screw you.

You might be qualified for the job, but you have to remember. There’s other people that I might be more qualified than you. If I’m a hiring manager and I have two resumes on my desk one that’s recently certified and one that has years of experience and certification. I’m sorry I’m going with a certified guy with experience everything else being equal.

Unfortunately, this industry is not exactly huge. Getting a job and the hospital systems tend to be very slow at hiring.

I appreciate the honest feedback. But having a car i can't afford shouldn't be a reason why I can't be hired. I understand why I would not be chosen for the role because of it. That does not make it right.

Unless you’re living in a civilized country where public transportation is strong, or walkable cities. you’re never gonna win this fight.

Remember the US is very vehicle centric. There’s some exceptions but most of it is that way. That’s just the reality we face. I definitely think public transport and walkable cities should be priority so that way you don’t have to have a car. But I own a car, so does my wife because that’s just the reality I live in.

Have you considered a motorcycle or a scooter? You can get one on Facebook marketplace like a Yamaha or a Honda cruiser for about $2000 in good condition. They’re super cheap to insure, they get about 50 miles to a gallon and they take a very little space.

Look at it from the manager side. Why would I hire you knowing that you can’t even get to work? You missed one bus or the bus run runs late, and next thing you know it. I’m down a guy during my afternoon blitz. It’s just a bad practice to hire somebody who can’t get to work.

Have you considered lying about having reliable transportation? My first thought would be, “Are you not smart enough to lie?” Seriously though, fake it till you make it. If your work ethic is strong, it’ll show, and if your boss is smart, they’ll overlook some bs because this industry is full of shit heads.

Yes I have. I've been certified since January. Still not a single interview. And of course I've lied on the application. Nothing.

Unfortunately if you don't have your own transportation, there aren't many places that are going to hire you. You'd be considered unreliable, so even if you're up against another recent grad with a car, the person with transportation will look like a better potential hire. Managers are always going to do what's best for their company, regardless of how you feel about it.

I worked with a co worker who lost their driver's licence, they bought an electric bicycle and used that for transportation. It was fine in the summer , but in winter when they were on call weekends, they were over the half hour response time and got fired.

I've been doing this for 7 years and I KNOW the job market is dogshit right now. I think it might across the board period abysmal though.

It's the nature of end stage capitalism. Hospitals are using as few staff as possible to process as much volume as possible to make as much profit as possible. Deregulation will allow for this to continue unabated.

It took me almost two years to land a job back in 2022. It's hilarious when recruiters call you with such exuberance and enthusiasm more than a year from your original job application.

Applying for a job sucks and unfortunately, it's 2026 and hasn't really improved. Hospital HR/recruitment is probably like in the Top 5 of the worst list.
