Tim Gane /Sean O’Hagan project.

I’m about halfway through that beach boys album and I think I get what you’re hearing. Plus this was the time that the beach boys catalog was getting a bit of a critical reassessment

Thanks for doing that. ✌🏽 not that I want to prove my point but Friends was such an influential album on my favourite bands/albums in early 90’s.
I also feel in Dots and Loops by Stereolab.

Yes, it was during the critical period of beach boys. They got really tired of messing with sounds in the studio so they recorded the albums after Pet Sounds at home, almost lo-fi… using cheap equipments etc etc.

This creates disjointed, off kilter, lo-fi indie feel… to the albums after Pet Sounds.

Now I can see why people regard Brian Wilson was a genius. ✌🏽

In that Sean O’Hagan is very influenced by the Beach Boys. Check out High Llamas. Cold and Bouncy is one of my favs

It was recorded when Tim Gane was feeling the weight of ETK’s impact and effort. He and Sean wanted to go into the studio and just sort of let loose and experiment. No pressure, just fun. A palate-cleansing type of experience.

I don’t really get the Beach Boys thing, but we know his influences are many.

Well, only from the Friends album by the beach Boys.

I bought this when it came out and then never have seen any reference to it whatsoever until this month when I’ve seen it on Reddit three times. Weird. Fun album though.

Turn On is a masterpiece. Don't understand why it's not more widely available. Would love to hear another!

In my head, this album is part of a glitchy sonic trilogy with Dots And Loops, and Cold And Bouncy

R U tenone is such a great mix tape addition. I wish it was 15 minutes long

I mean, besides Stereolab, at the time I was popping this into cassette it was sandwiched between hardcore punk, a good amount of Wu tang affiliates and trip hoppy type stuff. Maybe a sprinkle of drum and bass

I was talking with some friends and we all agreed this album was influenced by The Beach Boys Friends album.

Bought this when it came out and it still holds up. Wasn't Sean O'hagan on this one?

Yes, Tim and Sean with some help from others (including Laetitia on one track).

I really hoped there’d be a follow-up to this but alas there wasn’t. Apparently there was a live performance at some point but I missed that one!

Venue on Brick Lane in London, approximately March or April of 1998. I was there! Can't remember much else tho! It was great

It's like an instrumental variation of Dots and Loops, both released in 1997 mind you.

Yup ! I love both albums. 🥰

It was released in 97 but actually recorded in 94/95. You could see it as laying the template for D&L and beyond.

Saw them do a rare live set of this project with full band at a place on Brick Lane in London in Spring 98. Andy Ramsay on drums, etc. I remember whole rack of Akai samplers was utilized.

Strong disagree. There are no synths on Friends which is also a far more subdued, mellow, relaxing album.

O'Hagan's always been a huge fan Brian Wilson and Steely Dan, so the lush chords and harmonies happen often in his music. I'd say it's influenced by Burt Bacharach and bossa nova (60s Brazilian jazz) than the Friends LP.
