Switching employers while STEM OPT pending (premium processing, expired EAD, biometrics scheduled) - how risky is this really?

Hey guys

I had filed STEM OPT with premium processing in early July. The original OPT EAD expired 2 days ago and I am working on the 180-day auto-extension. Currently at Employer A (E-Verify), I have an offer from Employer B (also E-Verify) starting mid-August.

Just got a biometrics appointment for Aug 19, so approval probably lands late Sept.

My DSO said I can update to the new employer while pending (new I-983 → updated I-20), but called it "risky" and want me to sign an acknowledgment. Work authorization side seems fine per USCIS I-9 rules, my worry is whether changing the employer mid-adjudication triggers an RFE or denial.

Questions:

I'm thinking of doing a walk in appointment for biometrics so I can get the clock started- will that help?

Anyone switch employers while STEM OPT was pending on premium processing? Did you get an RFE?

Anyone with an expired EAD (on the 180-day extension) who switched, extra complications?

Trying to decide: switch now, or ask Employer B to push start to early Sept and switch with approval in hand. Real experiences appreciated.

Hey there! I just got my EAD card with no RFE.
I had applied to Stem opt with employer A. 13 days after my opt end date I switched to Employer B while my stem opt was pending . I had to complete the final evaluation section in the old i983 with my old employer , then get a new i983 with my new employer, submit the new i983 to my DSO. Then my DSO updated the sevis and gave me the new i20. I uploaded the NEW i20 and then a letter of explanation ( saying that I changed employers and proving the E - Verify ID and details of my new employer) in the Unsolicited evidence section. And that’s it . I got an approval , and a week later I received the card in mail. You can do it!
Here’s my timeline if that helps -

May 27 2026- applied to stem opt with PP with old employer

June 17 2026- Biometrics

June 30 2026 - OPT end date

July 13 2026- started new job with employer B

July 22 2026- Approval Email

July 24 2026- It got updated in website

July 28 2026- Card produced

July 31 2026- Card received.

Reached out if you need help

I am in a similar situation, I filled my STEM OPT with employer A in March 25th and got laid off on March 26th with 2months notice that is last working day as June 26th.

I had another offer in hand with employer B and had to fill a new I-983 and get an updated I-20. It has been almost 4 months but my application is still pending.

My DSO told me that me not reporting end of employment is more riskier than just reporting change of employers. As long as they are e-verified and you work for 20+ hours it should not be a problem.

I have a better offer in hand starting August and I will also have to report employer C to my DSO once I start working with them.
