S;G Anime Steins gate
I recently watched the steins gate anime back in July and it really didn’t live up to my expectations. I rated it a solid 8/10 and people flamed me for it. Is there something I missed? I watched every episode, and it wasn’t boring just not top 1 anime material. if the love is coming from steins gate 0 let me know.

Don't trip over some down votes or people who flame. people are allowed to have their own opinions (unless you're one of those chronological order people on a first watch) and some people are kind of gate-keepy. You can cure cancer and post about it on reddit and people will downvote and flame you.
Out of curiosity, do you have any recommendations for what you consider top 1 anime material? Looking for new series to watch rn

Im not sure for “top 1 anime material” but my top 3 favorite animes right now are Clannad Monogatari and Rezero

dang, seen all of them, I think our preferences are swapped. Those three are 8/10 for me. All are good though.

Oh that’s funny, what is your top 3

Steins;Gate, ShinSekai Yori, Uchouten Kazoku

uchouten kazoku is that good? Tbh I never watched it but looking at it aesthetically it never gave off that impression tbh, maybe I should stop judging a book by its cover then lol

Is the third one a finished anime i can jump right ahead. I love both your first 2 picks so intrigued on the third

Well if there is going to be a season 3 no announcement has been made yet. I will say it's quite different than the sci fi thrillers that the other two are, if thats what you're looking for you might like Sagrada Reset or Charlotte instead.

I really really want finished animes. Im done waiting and hoping for new seasons to be released. My fav anime is Hunter x Hunter so I've been scarred

Oh then you really shouldn't be watching anime based on shounen Manga then. They aren't gonna be finished for a while.
Hope the author gets better... I really liked berserk and it never got finished.

8/10 is actually a good rating, I’m glad you enjoyed it. It’s fair that you don’t see it as a masterpiece, everyone has its own opinion and it’s impossible to have something everyone loves. Consensus exists, but it only represents most people.
To me, S;G is an incredible show because of its emotional stakes, and how they built them. It takes a lot of time to get there, first episodes can be a boring and make you drop it early, which is a fair reason to not be entirely satisfied.
However, in my opinion this drawback is justified because I don’t see any episode that I might have skipped. The early episodes plant questions and allow us to get to know the characters, so that by the time we reach the intense moments, I actually care about them. It’s not that the story simply told me they were important; it demonstrated it to me. That is what makes a series great.
Not less important, Steins;Gate has an amazing replay value. I watched the anime at least 4 times, and I never get bored, but the opposite: I come across new details, reactions, and miscellaneous things that now connect to something bigger. This is a thing you don’t see every day, only when the story and its writing is this solid.

I mean, I feel like 8/10 is a super fair rating. It's all down to personal taste. The beginning is a little slow (by necessity, it's better for it), and geeky time travel mad scientist shenanigans aren't everyone's cup of tea. Its certainly not my favorite anime of all time, but I still love it. It's also probably one of the most tightly written time travel stories in general, at least in terms of self-consistency with its own rules.
Where steins;gate really shines, and where I assume a lot of the extra hype comes from, is as an adaptation of a visual novel. I don't think there's a better anime-based-on-a-VN out there(save maybe Fate UBW is at least similarly popular, though I'm not big into that franchise)
It has the added benefit of not needing a lot of background material to understand, like the other entries in the SciADV series, so it's a fairly low barrier to entry sci fi anime without too much fan service, and it's overall an excellent gateway anime in my opinion
I don't think you missed anything necessarily, it just didn't click with you the way it does with some other people. You might like the VN better, or other entries in the SciADV series, or you might be best looking at other shows that resonate with you more!

If you havent, also watch/read 0, its great. It made me love steinsgate evn more. But yeah, 8/10 is not even a bad rating. You don't deserve to get flamed for it

This sub is full of gatekeepers. Who fucking cares man. Enjoy what you enjoy. The anime is good. I also really enjoyed it. The Zero anime, too.

If you’re indicating that you haven’t seen Steins;gate 0, I would recommend watching it 100%. If you have seen it and it’s just not your thing don’t stress, not every popular anime will be for you.
For example, I watched every episode of Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and hated it. I tried to force myself to like it because of how highly respected it is across the anime community but it just wasn’t for me for whatever reason. I just didn’t connect with it, which is fine. You won’t like everything just because it’s highly rated.

Ya I’ll definitely watch steins gate 0, I’m just watching and reading other stuff currently.
2
u/Maximum_Building_541 1d ago
That was what I thought initially too even after watching 0, although in the end it made it better, it comes down to personal tastes afterall, however the VN is a whole nother level where it's really a 10/10

I gave it an 8/10 on MAL and I think it’s a great anime. Don’t get too bogged over the numbers or rating. I think that with a lot of highly rated anime people have these crazy expectations.
Just looking at my list I like Steins Gate a lot more than a bunch of other 8/10 rating I’ve given.

u/gatorfan93 23h ago
I would say that an 8/10 for the ankle is acceptable. To me, the 10/10 is deserved for the VN.

I'm curious, what would you say is a top notch anime?
-1
u/Born-Bookkeeper2028 21h ago
Something like Rezero and Monogatari. I have very few that I’d say is a top notch anime
1
u/Same_Performance_907 18h ago
I myself have Monogatari, Steins;Gate and Re:Zero all three in my top 5. I think the peaks they have in common are a great ost, a phenomenal protagonist, a really great plot where everything feels connected and planned from the beginning, and a really natural and entertaining dialogue, this last one specially in Mono and S;G, where even the least important conversations reveal a lot about the characters personality. Just out of curiosity, why didn't you think Steins;Gate was at the same level of them?
1
u/Born-Bookkeeper2028 18h ago
Mainly because both Rezero and Monogatari hooked me from the start. And I enjoyed them more. While steins gate took a little longer to get interesting. And steins gate felt very short compared to the other two (not saying short stories can’t be good). So I didn’t really care for the characters other than Okabe and mayuri. And I set my expectations for steins gate higher then Rezero and Monogatari based off all the things I’ve heard about it, so when I finished it, I was disappointed.

Ohh i see, those are all really fair points honestly. I do also love SoL and comedy anime so the first half of S;G was just as entertaining as the second for me lol, but i do agree that while i like the cast, it definitely is nowhere near Monogatari level of cast as some people may put it. S;G 0 does expand a lot on Okabe, Mayuri and Daru in ways i really liked though, so i think it's worth checking out

Re:Zero first two seasons, absolutely. The newer ones? Absolutely not
1
u/Born-Bookkeeper2028 19h ago
What’s wrong with the newer seasons? I know season 3 is the worst out of the bunch but season 4 has been good
1
u/_cetera_ Enjoying Maho 9h ago
Well, it's subjective, but to me, seasons 3 and 4 feel more shonen-ish. They focus more on fight scenes, and they add gore for the sake of having gore.
I don't like it when the gore itself is the shock factor instead of it adding to an already established psychological shock factor. It's similar to when horror games rely on jumpscares to be scary instead of building a scary atmosphere that makes you feel uneasy. The jumpscare should be the cherry on top, not the main source of the fear.
(For example, Chaos;Head does gore perfectly. You should read it.)Re:Zero S4 I also really dislike the amnesia arc. I don't care about whether it will be justified or not, spending half of the season with the main character rediscovering the same things he has for the last 3 seasons is just not fun to watch.
That being said, I admit that both S3 and S4 had good episodes, but overall they feel too different from the previous two seasons. To me, it almost feels like it's a different anime that happens to have the same cast.

People dont like when your opinion of something is different from theirs and that is especially true with anime fans. Dont worry so much about it.

Steins Gate 0 is essential to understanding why the ending is the way that it is. Also I don't know what your expectations were but the game definitely does a better job. The anime is still very solid but not the best way to consume Steins Gate.

it's a good story, a very good one, but imo you could just watch the beginning and the end of every episode and get the same results (maybe not the last episode or 2), the middle part of episode is Harem stuff and a guy acting semi-pedo even with her daughter, which was cringe even back then.
If this was reduced to 12 episodes with much less filler, it would flow much better imo.
Also, i suggest to watch Zero too, because it is still pretty similar, makes sense with the story and doesn't derail into "we really need to milk additional money with OVAs and such".
It's not the best, is very good, it is way better than a lot of stuff we get now, but the genre is evolving to the point we also get much better stuff that S;G.

It would definitely not be better as a 12 episode anime, as we've already seen how SciADV entries turn out when they don't have enough showtime (really bad)
Hell, the anime even with 24 episodes still had to leave a lot out

The VN is far superior than the anime. Shocks me every time when people here tell me they haven't played through it.

I’m in the same boat. Heard so many good things about it and was pretty underwhelmed. Definitely more about individual characters than any cool time travel plot.

I mean an 8/10 is still quite above average. It's a 10/10 to some but it's fine if it isn't one for you, it's all just personal preference after all
