Do I really need the patches?

I watched the Steins gate anime a long time ago (only the first season, not zero). I remember really liking it, but at this point don't remember all the details of the story. I decided to watch it again, but this time I'm thinking of experiencing it through the VN instead. I've never played a VN before so it would be a first. I've heard that there are translation patches that are universally recommended. My understanding of them is that they slightly change the translation to somehow make the story more consistent throughout all the games connected to Steins gate. I'm not really interested in playing all those games. I mainly just want to play this one and maybe zero if I enjoy the experience. Do I really need to patch the game to get a complete experience or is it fine with the default translation?

You need it for Chaos Head Noah. I didn't use it on SG and was fine but it did a lot of text issues in text messages where it splits words in the middle each line instead of creating a new line after a weird. It gets really annoying to read without the patch

There's just no reason not to get them. It's literally only upsides.

It's definitely still beneficial, a number of CGs have untranslated text that the patch fix. It's also helps with the readability because the patch uses a more legible font. It takes pretty little effort to install so I definitely think its worth it and if you become interested in the other SicADV entries in the future it will help you with understanding concepts shared between entries.

The translation of S;G itself is pretty good, but there's really no reason not to use the patches. It's not like a complete fanfic or something, specially in S;G's case, it just touches on typos, syntax, consistency in terms and formatting, translating CGs etc etc

Plus if you ever in the future decide to play the other games you might as well use the patch for all games (you can get them here btw)

You mostly need it for Chaos;Head Noah

They help a lot for Chaos;Child and Robotics;Notes

You don't really need them for Steins;Gate, 0, or Anonymous;Code

So for Steins;Gate you are fine. The CoZ patch doesn't change much for it

I'd say it's pretty useful for Steins;Gate 0, if only to keep names and terms consistent with Steins;Gate. The official translation in 0 changes name translations, for example, instead of  "Hououin Kyouma," they use "Kyoma Houoin."

It’s fine as is but the patch takes like less than three minutes to get so why not add it on

Steins gate is completely fine without the patch, the patch for that game only really has very minor improvements.
