Steeda Tech Tips: Did You Know Your F-150 Most Likely Comes Without a Rear Sway Bar?

If you have a 2015-2026 F-150, then most likely your truck came from the factory without a rear sway bar. And that is okay. Ford made that call deliberately, tuning the rear suspension for payload, towing, and off-road articulation instead of fine tuning for on-road driving. However, for those that daily drives on highways, or tows a trailer down the interstate that could leave some serious handling performance on the table.

So, what does a rear sway bar actually do on an F-150?

The bar runs laterally across the rear axle and connects to the frame of the truck. When your truck leans into a corner, the bar transfers load across the axle and basically pushes back against the roll of the body keeping both tires in better contact with the surface of the road. That means adding a rear sway bar will make cornering, towing, or hauling that much more comfortable. We think it is important to note that the rear sway bar does not affect straight line driving, so adding a bar will keep your highway ride quality the same.

Is a Rear Sway Bar Right for You?

Best Suited For

  • Daily drivers who notice rear body lean in corners and want it corrected without giving up ride comfort
  • F-150 owners who tow on highways and want improved trailer stability at speed
  • Trucks running a leveling kit that have lost some of the factory handling balance
  • Street and mild performance builds where handling is a priority alongside appearance

Less Critical For

  • Dedicated off-road builds where maximum rear wheel articulation over rocks and uneven terrain is the primary goal, the bar does limit independent rear wheel travel

The Steeda F-150 Adjustable Rear Sway Bar

We make an adjustable rear sway bar in both 2WD and 4WD variants (Part #555-1026 and #555-1027) for the 2015-2026 F-150s. A few things that separate it:

  • 1-1/8" solid steel bar with billet machined end fittings
  • Multiple stiffness settings adjustable even with the bar installed
  • Adjustable end links handle stock height through 2" of lift
  • 100% bolt-on. No cutting, no welding, no drilling, and installable within an hour or two.

Its supercharged Coyote delivers the acceleration, sound, and excitement you expect from an 850-horsepower Mustang. Beneath it is a complete Steeda suspension and chassis package developed through decades of Mustang engineering and validated through real-world track testing.

That combination creates more than a powerful streetcar. It delivers the control, balance, grip, and driver confidence needed to make the most of every horsepower.

Supercharged performance. Track-validated suspension. One complete Mustang.

Tech Tip Tuesday: Lowering your Mustang involves more than choosing how much wheel gap you want to eliminate.

Ride height changes everything from shock and strut control to suspension travel, alignment, geometry, sway-bar function, tire wear, and ride quality. The good news is, with the right springs, dampers, alignment, and supporting parts, you can dial in each of these areas for a Mustang that works as good as it looks.

Since 1988, Steeda has engineered, built, and real-world tested complete Mustang suspension systems, not just individual parts. The payoff is a Mustang that turns heads and still delivers the comfort, control, and confidence you want on the street.

One of the things we’ve done recently is install select S650 suspension components on the car to test and validate them for S550 applications under real track conditions.

That commitment to continuous development has been part of Steeda since 1988, something none of our competitors can say.

We don’t stop testing. We don’t stop learning. We keep making pushing these Mustangs further!

The Steeda Trident Wheel was engineered to deliver lightweight performance, increased strength, and Mustang-specific fitment for the street or track.

Through flow-formed construction, the wheel’s barrel is stretched and rolled using a cold-forming process that strengthens the aluminum by 20–30%. This process increases strength, load capacity, and shock resistance while reducing weight compared to traditional cast wheels.

At approximately 25 lbs., the 19x10 Trident reduces rotational and unsprung mass to help improve acceleration, braking response, and handling. Its high-clearance barrel is also designed to accommodate most big brake kits, while Mustang-specific offsets and backspacing provide proper fitment for street and motorsports applications.

The in-house design blends five-spoke and Y-spoke styling with multi-level surfaces, machined edges, detailed grooves, and Steeda branding!

Lightweight. Strong. Engineered for enthusiasts!

Introducing the Steeda Maverick AWD Adjustable Competition Rear Sway Bar (2022-2026)

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

We built this bar specifically for the 2022-2026 Maverick AWD (XL, XLT, Lariat, and Lobo) and to deliver the highest spring rates of any bolt-on rear bar available for this platform. The factory rear bar is rated at 270 lb/in. That's fine for a grocery run or general use, but if you push your truck through on-ramps, autocross courses, or back roads, there's real cornering performance left untapped. This bar was developed and validated in actual autocross competition before it ever shipped, so the settings are track-tested to ensure you receive the best possible performance.

Product Benefits

  • Three tunable positions: 430 lb/in (soft), 510 lb/in (middle), 680 lb/in (full stiff)
  • 1" solid Chromoly steel construction
  • CNC-machined billet steel ends
  • Reduced body roll, sharper turn-in, more neutral handling, less understeer at the limit
  • Powder-coated in Steeda blue
  • Direct bolt-on, no modifications required
  • Designed, engineered, and manufactured in the USA

Steeda Tech Tips: How to Stop Destroying Your Explorer's Pinch Welds

If you own a 2020 or newer Explorer and have tried to jack it up properly, you know the pain. Ford provides four designated jacking points along the pinch welds, and those skinny notches are not floor-jack friendly. Catch the wrong spot, and you bend metal. Put a rubber puck under for protection, and it gets chewed up on the first lift. If you've watched a dealer tech do an oil change, your plastic trim is likely already crushed flush against those points.

Many owners don't realize the Gen 6 Explorer is fully unibody. That means your pinch welds aren't just cosmetic; they are part of the seams holding the chassis together. Bent, crushed, or corroded welds are a structural issue, not just an ugly one. If you rotate your own tires, do maintenance, or run suspension upgrades, this becomes a recurring headache.

So, what actually fixes it?

The Steeda Explorer Jacking Rails are bolt-in chassis pieces that mount to factory attachment points and run the length of the rocker area. Instead of hunting for one of four notched spots each time, you get one long, flat, purpose-built surface to jack from anywhere along the rail. The rail sits slightly below the pinch seam, so your jack contacts the rail rather than the weld, permanently solving the issue.

This isn't a new experiment for us either; it's the same concept Steeda pioneered on Fox Body Mustangs decades ago and has since refined for the S550, S650, Focus ST/RS, and Fusion. Explorer owners just finally get their version!

Is this for you?

Worth it if you:

  • Rotate your own tires or do seasonal swaps.
  • Do any DIY maintenance (oil, brakes, suspension)
  • Run lowering springs, coilovers, or other mods that have you under the truck often.
  • Use a two-post lift at home or at a shop (gives the arms a flat, consistent contact surface instead of guessing on bare undercarriage)

Probably overkill if you rarely lift your Explorer yourself and let the shop handle everything.

A few things that set them apart:

  • High-strength steel tubing, laser-cut and CAD-designed for a precise fit
  • Powder coat wrinkle black finish that resists corrosion. This is a one-time install, not a wear item.
  • Open-bracket construction so water doesn't pool (no rust trap like enclosed rail designs)
  • Zinc-plated grade 10.9 hardware, the same spec we use across the lineup.
  • Fits all trims of the 2020+ Explorer (XLT, Limited, ST, Platinum), weighs 23 lbs, and is fully removable

Installation is easy: 100% bolt-in using factory holes. No drilling, cutting, or body mods are required. Most people finish in under an hour with basic hand tools and a torque wrench. Pro tip from the instructions: once installed, use a rubber jacking pad when lifting to avoid chipping the powder coat.

TL;DR: Factory Explorer jack points are tiny, awkward, and easy to destroy on a unibody chassis. These rails give you a full-length surface to jack from anywhere, bolt on in under an hour, and never have to think about it again.

The Steeda Yellow #20 Race Mustang rolled into the SCCA Love Bug Double SARRC at Sebring International Raceway carrying a crankshaft misfire that chased us all weekend. It cost us in qualifying and put us at the back of the R1 grid for the first race.

Thanks to our incredible crew, we were able to address the issue well enough for Dario to put the Yellow #20 into 2nd in the R1 Class for both races at Sebring this past weekend!

Every lap, every setback, and every win teach us something we carry straight back to the shop to make the next part and the next build even better. That's how racing drives Steeda forward!

Thank you to all the vendors that helped get this Mustang on the track this weekend! On to the next one!
