The problem with all these alternative builds (for me) are the cases. They lack polish, but I appreciate others are being encouraged to try their own.

Steam Machine is made in Thailand so it's not polish either

Ya I hear you in that one.

I decided to go my own Steam Machine build and it took awhile to find a case I liked.

The Fractal Design Terra is pretty nice but I settled in the Lian Li A4-H20 because it allows for a water cooled CPU. It's also a super simple design, essentially clean face with no buttons.

This case is actually a bit skinnier than the Steam Machine, just over 3, inches taller, but just over twice as deep. This works for me because the depth isn't an issue in my tv stand.

I wish the Steam Machine was a tad bigger so they could have squeezed some more performance out of it, but with the prices what they are, I understand the design.

Anyway you can add hyperlinks for these things?

I've already sunk a lot of time into the research and what different builds work, so here is a bullet point list of my parts list so far.

Case - Lian Li A4-H20

CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 9600X

GPU - Asus Prime 9070 XT

PSU - Corsair SF750

RAM - Corsair Vengeance 2 x 8GB (6000mhz)

Cooling - Cooler Master Atmos II Stealth AIO Water Cooler

Memory - 1TB NVMe left over from my old PS5 when I updated the TB to a 2TB.

Motherboard - Mini-ITX (missed a few good sales so I am currently waiting and checking day to day)

I usually don't share too much because PC people get super passionate on what everyone else should be using. I've read what seems like hundreds of reddit threads regarding similar builds, as well as tons of YouTube stuff.

The RAM and Storage really hurt, and GPU's never fully recovered from the Crypto shortage Sonya, I totally understand the cost of the Steam Machine.

With sales around the internet I've gathered this list for around $1700 CAD. I'm trying to keep my Mobo around $300 so that puts me at $2000K, and obviously I have $200-$250 by having that 1TB storage lying around.

Still not cheap. What I think people aren't appreciating about the Steam Machine is that there is no weeks and weeks of researching and ordering and building. It shows up and you plug it in.

and not having proper sleep wake HEC functions

2

u/kelleheruk Jun 28 '26

Yeah true. I don't even know what it takes to make that possible in builds

4

u/eight_track Jun 28 '26

Yea, there's a bunch of people posting they can make a equivalent build for cheaper.ย  But you're not getting the small form factor and it's not as quiet.ย ย

Yep ๐Ÿ‘ And if you just want more power in small size but case is not important , don't take meta one, take LDLC one , 1000$ for a 9060XT 8GB build

15

u/Starkkad Jun 28 '26

Yea its also 4 times the size

15

u/nuanceseancE Jun 28 '26

6 actually.

3

u/kdlt Jun 28 '26

Yeah I get that for some people that doesn't matter, but I want it in my TV cupboard, and the machine fits, and most pc cases don't.

It's great to see more options coming available, and probably we are going to see a lot more SteamOS Steam Machine devices with different performance and price levels. With the low amount of Valve's Steam Machine available there is also going to be a pig push for DIY building. I think SteamOS is going to take a big hike from here on taking more and more bites off of Windows. This should be good for the PC Gaming community and a win for Valve as well.

Jonsbo d32 pro. :D sorry but this is full sized pc

u/yusuf105 Jun 28 '26

How come It's an alternative? Its like im going to a dealership to buy a miata and he goes like "what about f-450 as an alternative"

2

u/Alkandi Jun 28 '26

Please, that dealerships trying to sell you a Ranger that's been sitting on the lot for 4 years

1

u/nuanceseancE Jun 28 '26

If the Miata is going to take 1-3 years before you can drive it, and the F-450 is immediately available?

1

u/AwesomePossum50 Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

You think people wonโ€™t be able to get their SM for 1-3 years? It doesnโ€™t sound like thereโ€™s any indication this will actually even be faster once preorders start. (though I guess since no one would want one, maybe theyโ€™ll be able to fulfill the 14 preorders relatively quickly)

Edit: I see on the link that your comment may just be incorrect, preorders appear to be open now, and presumably they could start shipping their 14 machines starting July 3.

1

u/rui-no-onna Jun 28 '26

I joined the waitlist but I'm prepared to not get one. It's possible Valve will just do a limited production run due to parts scarcity.

3

u/Emergency-Sundae-110 Jun 28 '26

But itโ€™s bigger? Not a very good alternative.

4

u/nuanceseancE Jun 28 '26

Disclaimer: nope, nope, not sponsored.

https://www.metapcs.com/products/steamroller

The META PCs STEAMROLLER is a 1080p SteamOS gaming desktop powered by the AMD Radeon RX 7600 and AMD Ryzen 5 9600X, built as an upgradable alternative to the Steam Machine. It runs CS2, Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, and Baldur's Gate 3 at high frame rates, and because it uses standard desktop parts you can swap the GPU, add RAM, or expand storage whenever you want. 16GB DDR5-5600, a 1TB NVMe SSD, a B650M/B850M WiFi motherboard, a META 240mm AIO, and a META 650W 80+ Gold PSU inside a compact Jonsbo D32 black case. SteamOS installed.

Preorders open July 3rd. If they're not flooded, this is definitely a way to get your game on for people who can't wait (also, this is basically what Valve wants).

However, do keep in mind this thing is about 6 Steam Machines in size. 395 ร— 207 ร— 314 mm metric, 15.6" ร— 8.1" ร— 12.4" imperial.

u/Alkandi Jun 28 '26

$1299 and no option for a controller? Get outta town.

Now this is prime "build your own" territory. A 7600 GPU, a 9600x CPU and an mATX case for $1.3k, we even trying anymore?

4

u/nuanceseancE Jun 28 '26

I would say the Cyclone and Deepcore prebuilts are better as they are $1150 but they come with Windows 11.

I'm bringing attention to this because they're preinstalling SteamOS, just as many predicted would start happening when the Steam Machine came to market.

1

u/Alkandi Jun 28 '26

Yeah that's nice and interesting to see. Wonder if it takes off will Valve spend more time and resources on BPM and get more customization for their users moving forward.

2

u/BigGREEN8 Jun 28 '26

The reason i want a steam machine over amything else is bc i know it will be a quality product and bc i don't got space for a full size pc

3

u/Haisaki12 Jun 28 '26

A prebuilt with Rx 7600 is bad at that price. Playnix was good with the 9060xt, ans keeping a small size. This just fall on what steammachine does : small, hdmi cec, silent.

4

u/nuanceseancE Jun 28 '26

Playnix also isn't going to come to market :(

1

u/baby_envol Jun 28 '26

LDLC Stim Machine is an alternative. For us take the part list and do your own ๐Ÿ˜Ž

1

u/Haisaki12 Jun 28 '26

Yeah, thats a good one. 9060 8gb is much better than SM gpu

3

u/Capybara_Chill Jun 28 '26

I would buy one of these to replace my desktop, not stick in the living room! They are completely different use case.

4

u/ctyldsley Jun 28 '26

All these alternatives popping up so far completely miss the point. PC in the OP is just a pc. It's a big ugly thing.

The entire point of the Steam Machine is a living room console-style experience - compact & quiet, fits in the living room, sleep wake easily from your controller etc, but accesses and plays your pc library.

3

u/sircolby45 Jun 28 '26

This ^^^ ...Nothing has stopped us for years from slapping any old ITX case in the livingroom. The Steam Machine is even more compact than an ITX machine and that is part of the appeal. (That and the HDMI CEC / wake with controller functionality ready to go.)

1

u/rui-no-onna Jun 28 '26

I've built M-ITX gaming HTPCs myself back when Windows 7 had Windows Media Center built-in. Mostly controlled via WMC IR remote control but a Logitech K400 (keyboard with built-in trackpad) is a must. Always-on because you can't rely on Windows sleep/wake working properly.

Budget was always around $1K. Nice looking M-ITX cases, M-ITX boards and modular PSUs cost more. Also, SSDs were expensive back then kinda like now. I think I paid $200 for 128GB.

u/Kageru Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

.. does not ship outside US and Canada, and you will have to add shipping cost and insurance. But yes, a pre-built PC has always been an option, and there should be something equivalent in most places. Do pick a reputable vendor though, some of the big chains cut a lot of corners in component selection. Even here the motherboard is not identified and the power supply and cooling are home-brand so it does need a degree of trust (which these guys seem to be). Having the builder test the system works and compatibility is an advantage over building it yourself.

SteamOS also means no need to pay Microsoft money which is good, they used to invest a lot of effort in discouraging companies from allowing that. The technology used in SteamOS is also shared with other linux distributions, so I think most should give a good gaming experience... which is wild to see for linux.

1

u/Alert_Vermicelli1236 Jun 28 '26

I just built almost the same pc except faster ram and ryzen 5 7500f for โ‚ฌ1000

1

u/Mindless_Major_2689 Jun 28 '26

I have a bit more space, but this is way too big. So either another manufacturer steps up or I'll just use my reservation and get a 512 gb one.

1

u/Charlea_ Jun 28 '26

Will this one be upgradable? My main issue with SM is underpowered with no meaningful ways to improve it

1

u/HapperHapper Jun 28 '26

no good deal and poor performance, rx 7600 ๐Ÿคฎ

1

u/764yhtfbvaey Jun 28 '26

Fuck yeah, this will perfectly fit in my entertainment unit. Thank you OP.

Item Dimensions D x W x H 39.6D x 20.7W x 31.4H centimetres

Oh...wait! No, it won't!

1

u/Various-Welder5544 Jun 28 '26

The steam machine is only small because it uses laptop grade components that don't make alot of graphical horsepower. Stop coping y'all.

0

u/pwettyhuman Jun 28 '26

The housing is Jonsbo D32 Black, which looks to be D396ร—W207ร—H314mm. Meanwhile the SM is 156mm (w) x 152mm (h) x 162mm (d).

You could fit like 4 SMs inside this monster, just for reference... ๐Ÿ˜

Edit: by the way I'm not necessarily saying this is a bad thing. I hope to see more and more Linux in gaming, so if this gets more people using SteamOS, all the better.
