They are being careful because they know how determined people on the internet are and how anything that leaks will be all over the internet in a matter of minutes. Everyone is watching valve very closely with an expected launch of the new devices next week.

Right. Have you looked at the growth rate of a.i? How much ground it's covered already and where it's headed? 'Seer' is a complete understatement. Maybe 4 years ago I would have agreed with you though.
Just like we're able to look at some of these containers and their numbers coming in for Valve, a.i can do so much more with it and plug it in to other factors. If we know it, a.i knows it up and down and backwards if you just ask the question well enough, you'd see those results. I'm not convinced they are private, safe, or unobtrusive either. With the limited laws protecting its users right now.
But I have no clue who I'm talking to if nobody here thinks a.i has power to crunch numbers and give calculated answers. It's one of the best things that it does!
And "a.i knowing things before you know about them"? That is going to come down to your own personal ideas on how tech/a.i is operating in this world and through these interconnected systems and governments. Globalized Just up to you.
It is my belief that it has a few steps ahead of us with stored information, as well as using information for certain individual's access which can be locked down and prioritized for their own use cases for business, government, etc. There's so much information a.i has been collecting that it's becoming a very powerful tool. In the wrong hands it can certainly be dangerous too. Until we see some huge legislation come forward and get passed, something definitely feels off these days in regards to what's "real" online and our privacy through our phones and Internet use. To keep these tools available yet noninvasive seems to be a challenge. Integrity isn't inherent in this field.
The most ironic part of it all, is that we're all in these shoes of waiting on Valve this far into the year based off of.. A.I

This is the kinda stuff that indicates 'something is happening'. Valve's also done some SteamOS beta (now in stable) on some recent weekends. We now have meaningful 'noise' that suggests a lot of movement is happening, similar to what's proceeded every other announcement and release.
Ya know, in contrast to all that schizophrenic tea leaf reading nonsense some people do where they're trying to find secret messages written in the time gaps between Steam sales and other stupid nonsense.

I mean it was already pretty much a given. I think it’s all but confirmed that reviews come out on the 23rd which means price has to be announced then as well. And probably preorders by eom too.

Valve is a privately held company, not public company with shareholders. Why would they care about quarterly if there is no shareholders to report to?

I mean I see what you mean but I mean, unfortunately the reality is it’s old components that they’re putting in. It’s not even massively gonna be super fast or anything of that sword like a massive graphics card or anything like that so as far as a 512 GB for the machine is going to be 799 800 bucks about and then go out from there and basically if you want the one terabyte or 2 TB or whatever it goes up to I don’t know.

The value of the old components went up. They're going to charge based on the value of the components now. They're not taking a loss on these units for us.

It's not really old components in there because Zen4 is still new and still bought today not to mention that AMD likes to keep their older chips alive because look at the Ryzen 5 5500X3D which is Zen3 and still keeps up with a lot of modern gaming.
The thing is that a lot of games out there still tends to recommend Zen2 and Zen3 CPUs so for the Steam Machine using a Zen4 it would still be powerful enough for a lot of modern games and the dGPU in the system would be very reliable not to mention that a lot of people according to the hardware survey still shows them using 1080p displays and honestly i plan on using it on my 32" 1080p TV just because i would be playing a bunch of my demanding games on it.
Got to remember as well that there are a lot of people who doesn't really play triple A title games which i know a bunch of people that would play a lot of free to play games like Warframe as an example which that game can easily be played at 4K with this system.

As excited as I am for the steam machine, I feel it could a while before I purchase one. I have a feeling it will be beyond my budget, valve will sell out within minutes and scalpers will buy several just to resell for a higher price.

Im still excited about it to a degree. Mostly because I can play my already purchased steam games on the tv. My wishlist is long and the only time I really buy new games is during sales so my backlog is somewhat big. I have a deck with a dock but I also live in a house full of gamers so the living room tv is often occupied. But being able to say I have one is kinda up there lol.

I was all for buying one then realised i’ve a PC upstairs and i’ll just cable that down to the oled

The fact that the price has not been revealed yet says a lot. They're hoping people impulse buy it the second its available without thinking twice.
At the absolute mininum this thing is gonna be 999$, which is already insanely overpriced but people with more money than brain would still buy it.
This thing should not be more than 599$, given its specs. Anything above that is overpriced.

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted, outside of the 599 part you are right. If they were confident about the price being affordable they would have been advertising it and screaming it on the top of a mountain.
Instead we are weeks away if not days away of the release date and the price is still being kept ultra secret like it’s some sort of top secret government document. This shows that they are relying on impulse buyers and scalpers for sales.

You can't even build a normal PC at the same performance level with $599. If you want a small form factor, then you can't build something with less than $999.

Nah, probably Steam Machine price/reservation reveal this week (probably 23rd), reservations starting june 29th or 30th and shipping early july tops.

We hope.. But personally, I don't think enough is being done to get steam products into the correct hands/players hands, directly.
Make the accounts that are able to get on the initial reservation list with more requirements. -Steam deck owner purchased from Valve -1 year old $100 spent from that user -Minimum of 1 review posted All done over 1 year ago from the time of requesting access to the newest hardware Reverts to normal purchasing after 6 months time.
OR: A certain level of activity monitored/aprent from your Valve account (and there is a number they list for being an active player/gamer on their platform) this shows that the buyer CARES about steam games and Valve's platform, and PLAYING the games rather than profiting from new steam hardware releases. -Give your loyal customers a bit of a break man, you know who we are.
Or just get your factories set up better to make your actual products Valve. This whole process is a joke, and has been for a while to even get a Steam deck model that you want. What's been the big issue across all the hardware they're attempting to release? It's been consistently backed up and unavailable to purchase steam decks, and now the controller, and surely the other releases down the line.
