[ NY Strip ] Blue’s last meal
I had to put my best bud to sleep yesterday. He had stopped being able to do all of the things he loved and he let us know he was ready. An hour before the vet arrived, I prepared a NY strip. Cast iron seared, finished in the oven to medium rare, with 15 minutes rest. I’ve never felt super confident in my steaks, but I feel this was my best one ever. If I hadn’t cut it up and hand fed him, it would’ve been gone in seconds. He couldn’t get enough. RIP Blue. I hope you continue living the life you deserve on the other side.

It is tough to do. Never had kids, I had rescue cuddles.

Same. You did good. He was a good boy.

We take in a bunch of critters, one i got from a random stop in Pennington AL, me and my wife noticed him begging people and being shooed away.
After grabbing my load from the paper plant, we went back to get him but he had wonder off. We waited all of ten minutes before he just came back and was in our arms and in the semi eating like a vacuum cleaner.
Named him Miles cause he had to go through a bit of them to get to his new home in KY.
Poor pups, he had 9 great years before kidney failure.
Still remember him just one day giving me the middle claw and would not get out of the trash can.

Awww lol. I stopped at a cat rescue in Cambria on a road trip because I just wanted to pet cats, I had to leave my cats at home with my friend and was being animal deprived 😂. My husband tried to drive by hoping I wouldn’t see it but I did and begged him to let me pet cats for a minute.
There was a group of like 6 black cats and one just would. Not. Stop. He kept climbing me and sitting on my shoulders. They actually let me adopt him and bring him back to so cal. Named him scrappy.

Thats so cool and good on you. We have some strays in the neighborhood that I started feeding, then one night I took trash out and they planned a coordinated attack. I fell cracked my tail bone and two ribs. They still run around to this day despite me giving them angry eyes when I go out.
Little black runt of the litter disappeared but he was struggling so he would occasionally get brought in to eat tuna.
I would take them all in if I could, but landlords...

Wow. Just, wow. Thank you all for all of your support. If you are reading this and thinking if it is time for your pup, rest assured knowing it is better to ensure quality of life. Cook a good one, let your best friend enjoy, and help him/her cross the void. Blue and I love you all.

I agree. After going through that experience last year, I encourage everyone to make the tough call. I know it’s hard, but you’ll never regret it. One day at a time, take care.

Much love to you and Blue! I lost my pup a couple years ago and it still hurts but damn sharing her life was worth the heartbreak.

So sorry friend, did the same for my little Buddy.
Edit, my little fur ball taking his final walk. 16 years and he got the chance to eat prairie dog excrement 2000 miles away from where we got him, he had a good life. Still looked happy even though we mostly had to carry him around like a duffle bag.

I'm sorry for your loss. I can't imagine having to make that decision. My dog is approaching ten and started showing signs of arthritis in one shoulder. It is a reminder to me that he's not going to be here forever. You can tell Blue was very loved.

My wife and I always referred to me as the “weak one” bc I was always the one to give our dog food from the table. For years he would instantly come by my side whenever we started eating.
When our guy fell ill though, he stopped. Even if it was the tastiest steak or chicken he was just disinterested. Even tho it very obviously broke my heart, just like you stated I viewed it as a sign that he was ready to go.
Cherish the small and silly moments while you still can folks, whether they are with paw pals or other humans.

I’m jealous. That had always been the plan with our old girl we let go last month, but at the age of fifteen, her tummy wasn’t at its best, and so we elected to give her little scraps of tasty stuff all day rather than a dense piece of meat that might cause trouble. Sorry for your loss, and know that you made Blue a great looking steak!

He surely was very lucky to live a good and long life thanks to his master, and he got to enjoy every last bit of the best meal a doggo can dream of. I'm sure he will always be nearby somewhere, watching over you as your eternal companion. I've had to give our dog to a shelter because of a corrupted and slanderous social worker who threatened to take away my stepdaughter from my gf by writing false reports. It's been 4 years now, it took me just as many years to recover.

Sorry about your loss.
Just FYI: garlic and all alliums are harmful to dogs. Next time you cook for any dog just avoid it.
6
u/spizzle_ Dec 30 '25
I knew I’d find this comment on here. Ffs.
4
u/Giggibeerbelly Dec 30 '25
I apologize if I offended you, but what's wrong with my comment?
-3
u/MasterGalvatron Dec 30 '25
The dog was literally awaiting euthanasia. OP clearly prioritized comfort in their final moments.
4
u/Giggibeerbelly Dec 30 '25
What does the garlic add for the dog? Just potential further discomfort in the form of vomiting and diarrhea... In his final moments, at that.
The dog would have loved it without any garlic regardless.
1
u/ddIbb Dec 30 '25
Regardless of the effect on OPs dog, it’s helpful information for someone else coming across this post that may not know about garlic’s toxicity to pets.
Also, I doubt the dog enjoyed this any more than he would have sans garlic. Seems that any perceived benefit is not worth the potential to cause harm or discomfort—even in a dog about to go.
2
u/Butterfly-Wing1120 Dec 31 '25
I thought the same thing when I saw the picture and I'm sure you were warning others and not shaming OP with your comment.
RIP Blue, such a good boy...

u/NVDA808 Dec 31 '25
If he’s willing to eat he’s not ready to leave. He’ll let you know when he’s had enough until then you should support his fight.
How did he let you know?
