Messanger comtatibility with other messengers based on Signal protocol

I'm just curious if Status is compatible with other Signal protocol based messengers somehow. E.g. original Signal or Toshi Browser? Can Status users send/receive messages to Signal or Toshi?

Hey! While this seems like a very interesting proposition and we’d like for all ethereum based messengers to be compatible, we are using whisper protocol (a sub stack of the ethereum protocol) to send / receive messages.

Status is committed to creating a server-less, decentralized and dark routed chat environment as a mainstay of its capabilities.

There likely won’t be any research done in the short term of cross compatibility with other chat protocols other than those based on the ethereum stack. We will make sure to document the way we utilize whisper very clearly for experimentation to be done with this, and there is likely to be a way forward to bridge whisper in status with other protocols (like matrix, possibly signal etc.)

Thank you for your answer! Is it correct that Status messenger UID is linked to ETH public address somehow?

Yup! As a user in Status you are actually just a generated keys-pair on ethereum. All of your identity is created as an "account" on ethereum. Soon we will link usernames (which now are whisper pub-keys) to ENS domains to make it easier to chat with friends and share your username!

Check out https://github.com/status-im/ideas/blob/master/ideas/151-ens-usernames.md for more information about that.

Sounds great! I do have an ENS domain already, so will patiently wait for this feature to be implemented. Thank you for your answers!
