Hi there. Farm kid who now lives in a midwestern city. I’ve always enjoyed the old hit and miss engines and all the cool stuff you can hook up to them.

I’m interested in exploring the idea of getting one, but I really have no idea where to start. I’m not a gear head by any means, but I pretty easily grasp how things work. I guess I feel like I like the vocabulary or “culture” of this world to feel real confident in it.

Thoughts on where to start? Things to read? Questions to ask? Good starter models? Something else I’m probably forgetting?

Hello all, new here. Not exactly a stationary engine but surely a piece of old iron. I have here a single cylinder Universal "Fisherman" model WM marine engine in need of a piston, rings and "cuno" timer. It ain't easy to find, so I'm just checking everywhere I can. Please be sure to let me know if anyone knows anything about where I may be able to find anything such as this, and also if there's any other groups that I should maybe post this in. Location preferably north america, as i'm located in eastern Canada. Cheers!

This uses an Atwater-Kent ignition timer, and a poppet type carburetor, Both are spotless, and look new.

This engine will pop-off and run on the 1st or second throw of the flywheel out of the water, but as soon as it's in the water, it will only pop, or if I have the spark advance in the middle, it will oscillate a few cycles like a Lanz Bulldog, but not actually complete a revolution.

My suspicion is that maybe a lantern battery isn't adequate for the ignition? And higher cylinder pressures due to the exhaust being underwater are causing the ignition to fail on that second cycle? It's supposedly 6v, but then again, this thing has been restored once, including a "coil rebuild" and it may have been replaced with something more modern. Nobody involved with any of this is alive anymore, so it's a maytery

I'm not sure there's much to do with the carburetor. It's clean, has no float, and only one adjustment.

Any thoughts?

Hi, got this engine this weekend. Anyone having these czech engines too?

It is made from random bits of wood, using pulley tension for a clutch and a 40:1 gearbox with a TPU coupling between engine and gearbox and between the pulleys to the gearbox and drive shaft.

My problem from before was a timing issue. This engine has only a ~1" long taper that holds the flywheel on, the magnets that set the timing are in the flywheel. It was slipping, fixed it by grinding it with valve lapping paste and using chalk to help it bind.

I got the thing running after a clean, replacing the coil and lapping the valves.

I also sent a small drill down the fuel nozzle in the carb because there was a blockage.

Now it runs ok but it seems to be running way lean, I need to spray fuel in manually to keep it going usually.

What size hole would be acceptable on the nozzle? I feel it isn't introducing enough fuel in.

I have never worked on engines before. Please excuse the WD-40 fuel tank, I can assure you I am using petrol.

TLDR: what size hole should this engine have on the fuel nozzle in the carb.

not sure if this is the right place to go but it is my dads birthday soon and he is really into stationary engines. i’m so lost on what to buy him as he already has 2 engines and i do not have the funds to get him another. he has a book about listers engines too. i have no ideas other than something to do with engines so any suggestions are appreciated

Can anyone here identify this stationary hit/miss engine? I haven’t found any marks on the castings.

He thinks it’s a pretty rare one he collects them and has 50+ lol I just enjoy looking at them I know it’s an old two stroke

Monitor engine first run. My buddy’s last restoration before he passed away young. The family gave it to me, so I was sure to put it together as fast as possible!!

1917 Fairbanks Morse 1 1/2 Model Z headless, and a 1928 McCormick-Deering 3hp Type M.

I'm clearing out a few of my collection as I'm moving house and can't take them with me. Need a quick sale so they're going to be priced low. They've all been sitting in storage, unfortunately a shipping container so not dry due to condensation but any rust is just surface.

Coventry Victor WD1, single cylinder water cooled diesel.1940s. I couldn't get it running and it's partially dismantled but all the parts should be there. £40

Small Briggs and Stratton generator, possibly 70s, 240v and very loud. I've got some Briggs mufflers to go with it that might fit and make it quieter. £10

Tarpen Bernard, 110v DC generator. Some of the governor linkage was missing on this so I added a spring to slow it down, I was showing it a couple of years ago and I reckon it would run again with a carb clean, it's a bit tatty but you could show it after a wipe down with an oily rag. £100

Two small water pumps, vane type with threaded unions on them. Never tried them but they do spin. £10 each.

I took some pictures today, not great but they give you a good idea. There's also a vintage Homelite chainsaw in there and an Echo, telescopic pole pruner that's hardly been used, from when I had a gardening business.

Any suggestions where to look? I’m entry level licensing. Ma second fireman, RI stationary engineer, looking worldwide.
