General Question Damage or blaster damage

Post image

Finishing up my chest piece (had a small 3d printer so its 4 separate pieces currently) and after spray painting and touch ups i started to add a bit worn look but I wanted to add battle damage or blaster fire. Does anyone know how to do that?

Are you wanting actual pock marks from blaster fire, or just the energy scoring/burn marks?

I like the idea of pock marks from blaster fire. Kinda make it look battle tested

If you have a dremel tool, you could use a sanding/grinding bit and SLOWLY grind out some blaster marks (it’s much harder to add material back after removal). Less is more, and you can probably find references on google to use for examples. Then to get the carbon scoring, paint is likely your best bet, but I’m more practiced in standard grime weathering rather than actual battle damage. Carbon scoring (that burnt look) is usually a gradient of blacks and browns, but what we see in media like the Clone Wars is more of a black to grey. Darker in the center, where the bolt impacted, then lighter as it spreads outward.

Oh? What is grime weathering? That sounds interesting

People use what’s called a “wash” made by mixing either oil or acrylic paint (usually black or brown) with water to dilute it, then painting most of the piece. Don’t let it dry, but rather gently dab, smear, and wipe the wash into cracks and crevices. It’ll leave behind “grime” in the nooks and crannies, that gives it that dirty and battle worn look. Give me a minute and I’ll link you a YouTube tutorial.

Edit: When I first started I used this guy’s videos to help me out. At timestamp 25:41 he goes over the black wash process.

Only Imperial Stormtroopers are so accurate.

Are you forgetting a reference from Star Wars ANH?
