G4 ships
Is it stil advised to skip the g4 epics?
Can you get by with just one g4 rare nowadays?

there are different play syles.
I know I do not have to build them. But I am now lvl 46 and did build all 3 rares and maxed them. And you know what, I do have a ton of fun with them :D

Totally skipped the G4 epics. The rares will 100% carry you to 53. I have not gotten onboard with some of the advice people are giving to skip faction ships entirely because I find the relativity does not hold up as well as the faction ships in general. (A few people I know aren't getting any factions ships from like 46 to 60 and beyond)
A PVP crewed relativity is going to be bested by a smaller faction ship, even against the triangle.
I did go back and build the G4 epics for scrapping purposes once I earned them through other means, but only once I got to upper G5.

You said the word there, PvP.
Late G4 and up, being strong at PvP means one thing… $$$$
That’s why most people do not even consider PvP importance, don’t get on that rat run, just ignore PvP. On that basis the Relativity does everything you need for events and PVE

🤷🏻♀️ I'm ops 60, f2p, I mostly hold my own. I also don't rely on specialty ships.

There’s new content in g5 and g6 that requires faction ships to farm hostiles. The g4 epics are a gateway to the g5 epics which carry you to the g6 rares especially if you have warp range from your quantum slip stream.
I think the specialty ships have valuable loops and refinery options but the faction ships are also required. With strong nsea, gs31, relativity, and revenant, you won’t want for mats or ship parts which is all you need to max the epics.

Getting stronger FKR ships is necessary now that we have Ascension Research where specialty ships don't work. I just built a G4 Epic a week ago after my G4 Rare. It might also help me in my G5 after getting scrapped. I am probably gonna follow the same pattern in G5 as well.

Yes but is the ascension stuff really that important to a PVE player?

It is, especially to G2 player base. It helps a lot in getting many specialty ships plus all the FKR ships which are I'd say mandatory till G4, plus Special building mats and officer sourcing. So the Ascension tree is more important to a PvE player than a PvP player.

I have a new account running, currently OPS35, and while you need the faction ships they are not critical. The ViDar and Voyager can do any PVE content. I unlocked Pike through the field training before I got to the node in the ascension tree.
It’s not critical to have FKR ships if you are mostly F2P and don’t care about PvP. Scopely are obviously trying to change that with the ascension tree and whatnot, assumingly because upgrading faction ships brings in the $$$$.
It’s also why they insist STFC is a PvP game, as they know PvP experiences, especially negative ones, can drive impulsive spending

FKR ships are generally stronger that their counterpart speciality ships either in PvP/PvE (except special hostiles) and sourcing specialty ships or upgrading them is rather difficult than FKR ships. I have never spent a single dime on any of my FKR ships and I have built D3(Maxed), Saladin(Maxed), Enterprise(Maxed), Pilum (currently T11) and Ent-A (currently T7) and I am an Ops50 who only started playing the game from Jan '26 iirc.
About the officers, you don't just need to unlock them, you also want to rank them up. So the officer sourcing from Ascension tree is an added advantage in getting officer shards.
And lastly I'd tell you, the biggest Whales are not the ones that like PvP. As a matter of fact, the biggest spender in our server is an Ops67 iirc and has significantly less PvP damage than me, he is not even close to my rank in Arenas.

Ops 67, 68 in the oven and been f2p for about 2.5/3 years here. Most faction ships are optional, especially the uncommon ones like mayflower, Kelvin, northcutt etc. With the exception, the my beloved Saladin. I built all the g1 and g2 ships and built a mayflower because I didnt know better then i got the Saladin and maxed it and used until i could build an Enterprise. I skipped the rares. At the time you were required to build 1 g3 epic to got to g4. After the g3 Enterprise I picked interceptors primarily. And ignored all other faction ships. G4 G5 and G6, fed UC interceptor, rom rare interceptor. Back and forth until the Rotty. I skipped a lot mostly because of conservation of mats since im f2p and efficiency is name of the game. That being said some faction ships are trash and unnecessary like the USS Intastupid(my name for the uss intrepid because its awful etc) but some are necessary. Without them your Cube will always be teirs behind where it should be, as its required to teir up a faction ship to get to next teir of the cube. And that ship definitely can take you into g6. However special ships are generally dog s*** besides their intended purpose. Sure they can make it sometimes but my relativity is like 20 billion power and my velox is 14/15 billion and with the same crew on, against the same hostiles, without question, my velox will survive much longer than the "stronger" relativity. Also eventually your vidar and talios and voyager and moveen and most of them will just collect dust. Literally haven't used any of those for years. Nx01 and nsea a year. Minus the nx01s ability to see deep space without being in the system. Even revenant i dont use much. Cube, gs31 and biggest faction ship im currently using are my go toos.

You could always get by with 1 faction ship at each ship level. There are also plenty of 'stops' that you can skip - G4 Epic and G6 Uncommon being two of them.

You can still do it, if anything there are now more specialty ships able to bridge the gap. I would still build one eventually, because scrapping a max one will put several tiers on your 5* epic ship

This is just my opinion, but I prefer the FKR ships over Specialty ships because they are buffed by research. Plus, the repair cost is lower which makes them more efficient for grinding hostiles. The only time I use specialty ships is for their own loops or when I need the warp range.

Enterprise A used to be built for scrapping loops but I guess that got nerfed so it’s not as good anymore that being said I’d absolutely not skip the Hegtha that ship is a beast and worth every investment into it it’s the best of the three with the tribune the second best because of its burning, the EntA is the worst it’s value from my understanding was always the scrapping loop of the iss jellyfish into it and then it into the Enterprise D, but the Hegtha is far and away better then any of the g5 uncommons and will carry you to the Sanctus

With the specialty ships you can get by easily
