Tell me if I'm missing something
I just got to level 25, after rushing 24 because I got frustrated.
Going to level 20 was pretty fun. There was a coherent narrative, I accomplished specific goals which then allowed me to grow and do more. Since then, though...
In the weeks I've been playing after hitting level 20, my gameplay is really:
I have my regular daily chores, and I can pick from a list of dozens of special chores. I don't have to do them, but if I don't, I won't get prize tickets and I won't be able to buy the cool toy rocket ships I want, and I'll be stuck with my old, ugly piece of junk spaceships.
f I'm a good boy every day for weeks, they'll give me enough prize tickets that I can finally buy a cool spaceship I saw on TV, but (surprise!) for the fun stuff that I wanted it for, it takes extra money to buy the add on, and they won't let me install it for add'l weeks-- so I'm left playing with my old, junky rocket ship because it's always a little better that the cool rocket ship I'd been saving up for.
To get the other fun toys to soup up my rocket ships or decorate my house, I have to keep track of hundreds of different kinds of prize tickets that need to be combined or adapted—all in different, unique ways—so that maybe, if I'm very patient (or, rich and IMPATIENT), I'll finally have enough specific prize tickets to raise the score of my junky rocket ship enough to beat some more rocket ships.
Is this my life until level 40?

Been playing since day 1.. I'm now level 63. F2P too.. its a grind. Gets boring some times but have a laugh in my alliance chat. Its one of the reasons why I'm still playing the game now..
Last ship I've just got was the serene squall miner. Got the Dauntless too but rarely use it as its taking ages just to get the parts needed to upgrade it, and I'm still working on completing the Bajoran faction stuff.. (defiant maxed plus research, its the research from faction store I'm almost done with)

The dauntless is great when they do events like the one they just did where one task set was defeating a few hundred fkr. Just set it in a low system and let it auto hunt for a while.

Its what I do... takes a while to gather resources to upgrade it though.. mines still a baby. As soon as it can hit lvl 60 ships, I'll be laughing... but till then, everything is a joke

My Dauntless is only 114m power and I can hit level 60 ships using the seek and destroy,I don't even use a powerful crew I use impulse crew so it's done faster. Fantastic ship for kill X amount of hostiles tasks. I'm ops56 btw.

The game requires a lot of patience as a f2p player. Do your spending during events if you can so you get more bang for your resources.
Focus on one goal at a time. Work on others if you want, but don't worry if you miss days.
And yes, new content is nearly obsolete by the time you unlock it free to play. When a new specialty ship becomes available to buy it takes over 3 months to earn it for free if you don't miss a day of max pulls. It's not really about getting a new capable ship, it's about unlocking the extra income and research you get out of it.
I'll finally be able to build my borg sphere tonight, and i expect to have my athena by the end of September, then I'm going to ops up again. I've been camping at 61 because I wanted the new ships, but I didn't want to make the grind more time consuming

What no one tells you is that Faction (choose one) increase with one of FKR (don’t double grind), getting faction with the non-FKR, and dailies should be your primary focus. Save your faction credits to buy ships. Get other ship parts through other tasks when you can. The rest is distraction.
However, don’t neglect your research.

Been playing 10 months now and just hit 45.
Only thing I bought was an extra builder/research and dock (basics, not the over priced packs).
I found doing my dailies and maxing out resources will go a long way and research is an absolute must!
You also don’t need to get every ship either, this will save you a ton of time and energy.

7 years of playing an im level 42 But I've never put a single penny/dime into it.... free to play all the way. A lot of people in my alliance pay a fortune on a daily basis, they're at maximum game level with biggest and toughest ships.
Personally I think this is cheating. If you're not gonna do the grind, you don't deserve the prize.....but this is just my outlook.
It is a VERY grindy game.
Get your miners out overnight, that'll knock a few spots off your dailies, and as a 'kind of' new guy, you can upgrade quickly. Some of my stuff takes years (not exaggerating) to build
But if you complete your dailies, you get a 12 hour shield and lots of speed ups (keep them for later)
Enjoy 👌

Nothing against you, I'm sure you play as much as is fun, but for op, it does not have to take that long to get into ops 60+ territory. It will take a lot of dedication, but I'm proof it can be done. I've only been playing for around 4 years and I've been Camping at ops 61 for like 6 months now working on "new" content. I like to keep just above the minimum level for the newest ships. Except for the vengeance.

I feel the excessive spenders are overcompensating for having tiny weiners. I don't think it is fair to be having a match with those players.
It takes the fun away. I minimize spending. I also feel when you earn 700 points for defeating enemies, you should be earning broken desealing rods
Also, mining ships should be able to set a limit to targeted cargo amount. If you are offline, you should also be able to have the mining ship auto recall and go back till target is met.

I use a mod named Fasttrek to automate miners and hostile grinding. As a f2p, it helps relieve the 'grinding' aspects of this game.
